Kevin Morby, Waxahatchee Release Covers to Defend Kansas Abortion Rights

Kansas-based indie rock power couple Kevin Morby and Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield have released covers today (July 21) of Broadcast’s “Tears in the Typing Pool” and Guided By Voices’ “The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory” for a cause close to their hearts. Proceeds from the Bandcamp-exclusive tracks will benefit the Vote No Kansas PAC. The organization is working to prevent the passage of Kansas House Bill 2746, which would completely ban abortion in the state if a separate amendment is passed allowing the legislature to change the current legality of the procedure. “With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the state of Kansas, where we live, has become a really important haven for bordering states in the fight for access to reproductive healthcare,” Morby and Crutchfield said in a sta...

Wynonna, Waxahatchee Explore ‘Other Side’ on New Duet

Wynonna Judd has released her first new music since the recent death of her mother Naomi in the form of “Other Side,” a duet with roots-tinged indie artist Waxahatchee (Katie Crutchfield). Co-written with Wynonna’s husband Cactus Moser, the track was recorded at Wynonna’s Nashville-area farm and its accompanying video shows her and Crutchfield performing and hanging out together. “In the midst of everything that has happened, I said that I would continue to sing,” Wynonna said. “So, here I am. I met Katie Crutchfield last year and we connected immediately. We recorded ‘Other Side’ in the studio here on the farm and it was one of my favorite recording experiences ever. I’m thankful for the opportunity to sing with the next generation of greatness.” “Wynonna is an icon and a fountain of wisd...

Waxahatchee Covers Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams on Saint Cloud Deluxe Edition

Waxahatchee’s 2020 album, Saint Cloud just hit its one-year anniversary, and to celebrate the landmark, Katie Crutchfield did what 2020 wrought for musicians:  a live-streamed show. The content within that livestream beautifully evolved into a deluxe edition of Saint Cloud featuring three covers: Lucinda Williams’ “Fruits of My Labor,” Dolly Parton’s 1977 gem “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” and Bruce Springsteen’s poignant HIV/AIDS song “Streets of Philadelphia.” Crutchfield adds her own peaceful spirit and indie-twang to each song. The new collection of music is titled Saint Cloud +3 and can be found on all streaming services and BandCamp. Saint Cloud arrived just as world-wide lockdowns were in place last year, so her first project since 2018’s Great Thunder&nbs...

The 30 Best Albums of 2020

After a deluge of canceled or delayed tours, drive-in experiments, Bandcamp Fridays and bedroom livestreams, we’re finally here. Yay? It’s hard to celebrate much of anything in 2020. But one encouraging sign from the music industry has been the number of artists innovating on the fly — figuring out ways to sustain their careers through the madness. And as fans, at least we’ve had new albums to help us process our continuing semi-apocalypse. Having (mercifully) reached the end of this awful year, we have even more perspective on the functionality of a great record. The 30 we’ve assembled here have prompted us to dance, helped us grieve, made us laugh, or even just allowed us to escape into a transportive riff or soundscape. We assume they did the same for the artists themselves. Let us reme...

The 50 Best Songs of 2020 (So Far)

Great songs have a freedom that albums don’t because great songs only have to pull off their trick once. It’s like how a great SNL sketch can be a terrible movie or why Vine was an underrated miracle of online comedy. Sometimes an artist can get a lot more done in miniature. When people say that no one listens to albums anymore, they’re obviously mistaken, but they mean that no one listens to certain kinds of albums anymore. They won’t wait to get to the good part, and an industry that’s been padding out their wares for decades has had to adapt to a new reality where the customer is always dope. From Hailey Whitters to Hayley Williams, from King Von to Christine and the Queens, here’s a supercut of just the good parts: The songs that have challenged and delighted and comforted us through a...
