It solely comprises remixes of the three tracks from Red, as ZHU captures the originality of each while offering his eclectic dance music flair. ZHU released three new remixes of songs by Vince Staples, Cyn, and Mabel to celebrate Pokémon’s 25th anniversary. The Pokémon Company ZHU’s ambient remix of Cyn’s “Wonderful” communicates an elegant fee...

EDM.com can exclusively reveal that the Pokémon 25: The Blue EP will release this Friday, August 20th. ZHU, a lifelong Pokémon diehard, will transform each song into a celebratory remix for the brand’s 25th an...

Released this past Friday (July 23rd) by NPR Music, Vince Staples’s set took place in a palatial house out in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles. The entire set exclusively features songs from his new self-titled album, launched via Blacksmith Recordings/Motown Records. Vince Staples entered the Billboard charts at No.1 for Current Rap Album upon its release, and the acclaim it received placed it at No.21 on the Billboard 200 at the time. For Staples, this release is just the beginning for what he has planned for 2021. The rapper has several projects that he’s currently ...

Vince Staples’ Self-Titled Album Turns Grudgingly Inward

Vince Staples, the eponymous release by the Long Beach rapper, takes quick stock of his lifestyle against the backdrop of his troubled past. Staples, who has long reckoned with the complications of the fame his music brought him, does not linger on this description, instead keeping to the cold honesty and tight arrangements of his signature style.  Kenny Beats, who transitioned into a thriving career as a hip-hop producer after forming half of the EDM duo Loudpvck, handles all production on the album. He also made contributions to Staples’ previous release, 2018’s FM! — another short project (“because who needs more bullshit?” Staples wonders aloud in a Def Jam press release), which, like Vince Staples, was made even shorter by the inclusion of a pair of interludes. As the title ...

Vince Staples Releases ‘Law of Averages,’ Announces Self-Titled Album

Long Beach has a rich but underrated and underappreciated history for great hip-hop, at least compared to its neighbors to the immediate north. Now that that’s out of the way, one of the great voices to emerge from this cradle of creativity in the past decade is Vince Staples. The rapper will be releasing his self-titled studio album on July 9 on Blacksmith Records/Motown Records. Staples’ previous album, FM!, was released in 2018. From it, Staples has released its first single, “Law of Averages,” which he teased on his social media platforms earlier this week. You can now see the video for Staples’ new song, which was filmed in Long Beach, below. Is Vince Staples Responsible For Policing Asian Crip Behavior? Twitter Thinks So

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Tim Mosenfelder / Getty Is there a Crip HR for non-Crips to make a complaint? Apparently, some Twitter users think that Vince Staples is the closest thing to that department. After trying to start a conversation about the NBA playoffs the Long Beach rapper took some incoming fire on Twitter from Hip-Hop blogger DDot Omen for not speaking up about a video showing a gang of Asian Crips in Sacramento using the N-Word and calling themselves “Real Black N-ggas” while wearing “Stop Asian Hate Shirts.” We know—there’s a lot of irony to unpack there.  Staples, a reformed gangbanger who ran with the Crips growing up in Long Beach, was probably confused on why DDot directed the tweet at him like he’s responsible for these non-Black Crips that he’s probably nev...

Vince Staples Compares Nipsey Hussle To Black Revolutionaries In New Interview

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Tyrell Hampton/GQ / Tyrell Hampton/GQ Vince Staples chopped it up with Desus Nice of Showtime’s Desus & Mero during a recent interview for GQ magazine. Desus wanted the Long Beach rapper to touch on how Nipsey Hussle’s death affected him being that they shared similar backgrounds as LA Crips turned successful Hip-Hop artists. “With Nipsey’s passing, that was huge—major—across the whole world. And you’re someone who comes from a similar background. You’re not Nipsey, but you’re a successful rapper. You still be out there. How does all of that make you feel?” Desus asked. “If you look historically at people in leadership roles—especially leadership roles in Black communities, especially in urban communities—there’s no connection if you’re not physically...

5 Songs You Never Would Have Heard Without SOPHIE

After the crushing loss of electronic music icon SOPHIE last month, artists from all ends of the music community united together to mourn collectively and share their favorite moments with the late artist. Her far-reaching influence can be attributed to her unique manipulation of sonics and her persistent sense of self, inspiring young creators—especially those holding LGBTQ+ identities—to feel comfortable in their own skin and pursue their dreams.  SOPHIE’s work received large-scale recognition in 2018, when her debut album, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. At the same time, she was also a prolific producer, assisting a plethora of iconic names in the studio over the years.  To celeb...
