Luna Share Kaleidoscopic Cover of Television’s ‘Marquee Moon’

Although the members of Luna are literally all over the world, it didn’t stop the band from collaborating on a new recording. And today (Aug. 21), they released their version of “Marquee Moon,” the 1977 title track off Television’s debut album. While they stay pretty true to the original, the video for the song is a bit of a kaleidoscopic trip. Luna explained covering “Marquee Moon” in a statement: “During the current pandemic, with Luna members spread around the globe, our former bassist Justin Harwood suggested that we record Television’s epic track ‘Marquee Moon.’ We recorded the song one instrument at a time in four different locations; Lee Wall recorded his drum track in Austin, Sean Eden tracked the guitars in San Francisco, Justin played the Fender bass in Auckland, New Zealand, and...

The Killers Bring ‘Blowback’ to The Late Show

The Killers’ new album, Imploding the Mirage is finally out today (Aug. 21). And the band celebrated the release by debuting their new single, “Blowback” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night (Aug. 20). Unlike their previous quarantine performances, this one shows the full band, while still socially distanced, back together onstage. As Bobby Olivier pointed out in his SPIN review on the album, this song, along with the rest of the LP, is “an easy bridge to the next arena tour.” Even though it may take a while until we get back to that kind of live event, it was nice to see what the Killers are bringing to the table with “Blowback,” which Brandon Flowers and Ronnie Vannucci, Jr., initially shared on the CBS This Morning in April. But now, we get to see the whole group play it, an...

The Chicks Open Final Night of 2020 DNC With ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’

While other artists’ performances during the 2020 Democratic National Convention were weaved well into the night’s telecast, the Chicks helped open the final night of this year’s DNC. Instead of energizing those tuning in with their new single, “March March”, the country trio performed a powerful acapella version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Chicks, who recently changed their group moniker, stood in front of dark green backgrounds with the cameras tight on their faces. And their buttery vocals were so powerful that you can feel the meaning of what America’s national a little bit more. Common and John Legend paid homage to the late civil rights activist and U.S. Representative John Lewis with a performance of their Oscar-winning song, “Glory,” from the 2014 Ava DuVernay-directed film ...

Billie Eilish Debuts ‘My Future’ at 2020 Democratic National Convention

After dropping her new song, “My Future,” last month, Billie Eilish debuted the track on the third night (Aug. 19) of the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Before starting her performance, she not only shared her thoughts about the importance of voting but also what’s at stake. She said: “You don’t need me to tell you that things are a mess. Donald Trump is destroying our country and everything we care about. We need leaders who will solve problems like climate change and COVID[-19], not deny them. Leaders who will fight against systemic racism and inequality and that starts by voting for someone who understands how much is at stake. Someone who’s building a team that shares our values. It starts with voting against Donald Trump and for Joe Biden. Silence is not an option, and we cannot...

FIFA partners AU, WHO, CAF to promote campaign against domestic violence in Africa

FIFA is joining forces with the African Union, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to jointly address the issue of domestic violence by launching the #SafeHome campaign across the African continent. The initiative is designed to support women and children victims of domestic violence, particularly as stay-at-home measures in response to COVID-19 have put them at greater risk. A number of African football stars are supporting the campaign via video awareness messages distributed on social and traditional media. The African Union-FIFA-CAF memorandum of understanding, which was concluded in February 2019, covers joint campaigns on topics of mutual interest and the promotion of gender equality, a key principle. Other areas of collaboration includ...

Phoenix Return With ‘Identical,’ Discuss New Album Details

It’s been a few years since Phoenix’s 2017 LP, Te Amo. But the French band is back with “Identical.” Bringing the synths and high energy, “Identical” will also appear on the soundtrack to the new Sofia Coppola film, On the Rocks, starring Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans. Aside from “Identical,” which you can also hear featured in the movie trailer below, Phoenix also wrote the score and put together the soundtrack — making it the band’s fifth collaboration with Coppola. “Too Young,” off their 2000 debut LP, United, appeared in her 2003 movie Lost in Translation, kicking off their creative partnership. While “Identical” is meant for a film, singer Thomas Mars said that the track will likely be on their upcoming new album — despite the fact that it goes in a different sonic...
