Alicia Keys and Brandi Carlile teamed up for a new song that they hope will not only inspire people to vote but also encourage everyone to speak up for what they believe in. Entitled “A Beautiful Noise,” the Grammy winners performed the track on “Every Vote Counts: A Celebration of Democracy,” which aired on CBS last night (Oct. 29). “This song has that special energy that we really need to feel right now,” Keys said in a statement. “Everyone has the power to make a beautiful noise and to lift others up with their voice. And now more than ever, we need to let those voices be heard by voting. I’m so grateful to have joined my sister Brandi Carlile, a beautiful spirit, inspiring artist and incredible person, for this moment.” Carlile echoed Keys’ sentiments and said, “The evolution of ‘A Bea...
Paris Jackson has always loved singing — she does come from music royalty after all. But after playing with The Soundflowers, she’s finally relasing something on her own. Exploring the birth and collapse of love, Jackson penned the track while it was produced by Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra. Directed by Meredith Alloway, the video further illustrates the message with an opulent love story that seems like a fairy tale. But by the end of the visual, you’ll see the idea of dying for love in a different light. [embedded content] “I feel so many emotions,” Jackson said in a statement. “I’m excited, I’m nervous, mostly grateful and happy…The freedom to create, not being told what to sing and how to sing it, what to write; it’s awesome. It’s a gift, it’s a blessing.” “Let Down” is the lead s...
Public Enemy’s first album with Def Jam in an eternity (OK fine, 20–plus years) is out now. Chuck D, Flavor Flav and company enlisted legends of the past and the stars of today for the recording. The group also leaned on their longtime pals for the release of their video for “Public Enemy Number Won.” Enlisting Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock and Mike D and Run DMC, the video features vintage footage of the guys from Def Jam’s halcyon days. Check it out below. [embedded content] As usual, it wouldn’t be a Public Enemy clip without some political bent. “With less than a week to go before election day, we’re seeing record breaking early voting numbers across the country, and this effort is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encourage voters to make their voices heard at their favorite sport...
Apparently, music is in the Young family’s genes. Neil Young’s older brother Bob dropped his first-ever single, “Hey America” with the Peterboroughs, at the age of 78. (Neil is four years, er, younger.) The tune, out on Shakey Pictures Records, features Neil Young on harmonica. “The filming of ‘Hey America’ was done in the Covid 19 environment,” Neil Young said in a statement. “One shot where we’re all standing together, singing without masks was done in three separate shoots with the same background and assembled in post-production to look like three people singing together. Stay safe,” the younger Young added. The shaggy folk anthem, which sounds like Homegrown-era Neil Young, was an inspired creation. “I didn’t set out to become a songwriter and singer at 78 years of age,” Bob Youn...
In a spoof that mimics commercials for nebulous drugs that treat unnamed issues, Dave Grohl reflects on a decade-old coffee addiction used to impair “solid bowel movements” leave him with “noxious coffee breath.” In his (excellent) version of a serious/sad TV voiceover, Grohl laments, “I found myself doing anything for the fix. My roast grew darker and darker until I finally hit pot bottom. I couldn’t be there for the ones I love when they needed me the most.” But wait, there’s a cure! TV-ad-Grohl perks up when he shills for “Fresh Potix.” But, as with all “those” drugs, it seems the side effects may be worse than the disease, just ask his Foo Fighters bandmates. A woman’s voice soothingly advises to “consult your doctor” should you experience any of the following side effects: “severe mon...

The Flaming Lips document their socially distanced “bubble” show in Oklahoma City with their new “Assassins of Youth” video. Despite the strangeness of seeing attendees in their own individual bubbles, everyone appears to be having a good time. It’s part rave, part Lips extravaganza, and everyone gets in on the action — including singer Wayne Coyne, who walks atop the crowd in his own bubble (a staple of the Lips’ concerts for quite a while now). Coyne, who also directed the video, detailed the filming process in a statement. “Of course, our MAIN priority (when doing the performance for the music video) was making sure everyone was safe and all the health cautions were being enforced,” he said. “But there was a welcome side effect: ‘I forgot about how exciting and fun and ridiculous i...
Belle and Sebastian weren’t able to hit the road this year, but they’ll be taking fans back to their 2019 tour with a new live double album, What to Look for in Summer. The idea for this record was not only inspired by fan demand but also was a new replacement project since the band’s plans of working on new material were squashed by the global pandemic. “It was something to focus on,” said guitarist and singer Stevie Jackson said in a statement. “That was very, very nice.” Singer and violinist Sarah Martin added, “It was quite nice to be doing that when we couldn’t even see each other.” To give fans a taste of what songs the band selected for the new live album, Belle and Sebastian released two videos — “The Boy With the Arab Strap” and “My Wandering Days are Over.” [embedded content] Stu...
John Carpenter is back with new music. The legendary composer and director will be releasing Lost Themes III: Alive After Death — his first non-soundtrack LP in almost five years. And to top off the news, Carpenter is also sharing the lead single, “Weeping Ghost,” which you can listen to below. [embedded content] The new record sees his collaboration with son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, whom he collaborated with for the David Gordon Green-directed Halloween films, continuing on. “We begin with a theme, a bass line, a pad, something that sounds good and will lead us to the next layer,” John says of the trio’s process. “We then just keep adding on from there. We understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses, how to communicate without words, and the process is easier now...

With just over a week before the U.S. Presidential election, the Foo Fighters brought a stripped-back version of the band’s “Times Like These,” off their 2003’s One by One, to the I Will Vote benefit show to raise funds for the Biden-Harris campaign. The performance featured Dave Grohl at the mic with an acoustic guitar, while keys player Rami Jaffee accompanied him on the ballad. And with everything riding on this year’s election, you can feel the emotion and power in Grohl’s voice. “This is one of the first concerts I went to when I moved back to LA,” said actor Armie Hammer, as he did an intro for the Foo Fighters. “…a group of musicians who are longtime advocates for social change. I mean, I still remember the incredible performance they gave at the DNC in 2012.” [embedded content] “Mu...
Two Minutes to Late Night continues to celebrate Halloween with an Iron Maiden-ized version of the mosh-worthy tune “Dead Man’s Party” originally done by Los Angeles-based new wave legends Oingo Boingo. Dethklok guitarist Nili Brosh — who also tours with Oingo Boingo leader Danny Elfman — plays on the tune while wearing a Nightmare Before Christmas facemask, a nod to Elfman’s soundtrack work on the film. Other musicians include Protest the Hero drummer Michael Ieradi and vocalist Rody Walker, along with bassist Pete Green of Giraffe Tongue Orchestra and Dethklok. Dethklok was created for the Adult Swim show Metalocalypse, which is now canceled, but the band lives on. For October, Two Minutes to Late Night, which features punk and metal musicians jamming remotely on...
