BRISBANE, Australia — George Ash is stepping down as president of Universal Music Australia and New Zealand. In a surprise announcement that hit inboxes as the music industry settled in for the first day of the working week, Universal Music Group announced Ash would retire from his position at the end of the year. “The time is right for me to step down from Universal,” says the outgoing executive in a corporate statement. “I feel confident that with the brilliant leadership group we have now, the organization will continue to grow and thrive. New Zealand-born Ash will leave UMA as part of a “long-planned personal decision to focus on new goals and projects,” reads the statement, “whilst leaving the company under the leadership of a new generation of executives, who will continue to b...
There’s a lot of faults to Yesterday, the 2019 musical rom-com that imagined a world in which The Beatles never existed. But of all the reasons to gripe about it, two fans chose a really strange one to bring to court against Universal Pictures: The fact that Ana De Armas‘ scenes were cut from the film. The fans in question, Conor Woulfe and Peter Michael Rosza, filed a consumer protection class action lawsuit alleging “deceptive, and misleading advertising.” Apparently, trailers for the film led them to believe that De Armas had a major role, which was ultimately taken out of the film before it hit streaming. Woulfe and Rosza evidently spent about $8 total to watch the film, which — as their lawsuit implies — was wasted due to De Armas’ absence. Though Yesterday‘s main love inter...
An auto-reply from Facey’s email account confirms he is “no longer with the company” and directs inquiries to Jim Roppo, EVP/General Manager at Republic Records. Facey was understood to be the subject of an internal investigation, news of which first emerged in late August on Beneath The Glass Ceiling, the Instagram account that’s been holding the music industry to account for bad behavior. The reasons for Facey departure are unclear, and he has not been accused of any wrongdoing. A spokesman for Universal Music Group confirmed his departure from the company, and tells Billboard there is no further statement at this time. Roppo did not respond to requests for comment. The latest development follows the launch of an independent investigation at Universal Mu...
One of Hollywood’s most notorious wrecks is getting raised from the depths. A TV sequel series to the beloved 1995 critical flop Waterworld is being developed by the film’s original producers. John Davis and John Fox confirmed the news in an interview with Collider, saying that director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, the next Predator movie) is already onboard. “We’re not 100% sure on the approach to the show. But definitely, we’re in the building stages right now,” said Fox, noting that they’re expected to lock in a writer “over the next couple of weeks.” The plot will reportedly pick up with the same characters from the film 25 years later. Waterworld was set in future where polar ice caps had completely melted, covering all the Earth in ocean (prescient, n’est pas?). K...

As Deadline reports, Diesel will be co-producing a live-action Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie based on the once-popular tabletop boxing game. Launched in 1966, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots had a simple premise which could be summed up as ‘robot smash.’ Players helmed either Red Rocker or Blue Rocker and mashed buttons until either one robot’s head popped off or an angry sibling hurled the board across the room. The controls were wonky, the end of matches unsat...
The Pitch: Hutch Mansell’s the name, and accounting is his game. Bob Odenkirk is Mansell, a five o’clock shadow of a human being, working in a warehouse as the back-office calculator. He drones day in and day out, running the numbers for louder and more macho men. His son hates him. His wife sleeps with a pillow between them. His life is the very model of suburban repression and depression, but beneath the pale exterior lies a sleeping giant. Prior to accountancy, Hutch was a homicidal “accountant” for “all the places with acronym names”, as he puts it. He was once a veritable James Bond, with an affinity for swift completions and anonymity. Now, no more. It’s all Restoration Hardware décor and vinyl collections for lame old Hutch. But where most men spend their midlife crises on cars, boa...
