Megan Thee Stallion Explains Why She Speaks Up for Black Women in New York Times Op-Ed

Megan Thee Stallion wrote an op-ed piece for the New York Times today (Oct. 13) about Black women in America. Titled “Why I Speak Up for Black Women,” the piece addresses voting, the alleged shooting by Tory Lanez and the continuing pressure on, and mistreatment of Black women. “Black women are expected once again to deliver victory for Democratic candidates. We have gone from being unable to vote legally to a highly courted voting bloc — all in little more than a century,” she writes. “Despite this and despite the way so many have embraced messages about racial justice this year, Black women are still constantly disrespected and disregarded in so many areas of life.” She goes on to state, “I’m not afraid of criticism. We live in a country where we have the freedom to critic...

Eddie Van Halen Temporarily Honored in New York City Subway Station

Late superstar guitarist Eddie Van Halen has a New York City subway stop named after him, in a temporary, guerilla-style homage to the shredder’s massive musical influence. New York street artist Adrian Wilson takes credit on Instagram for making Brooklyn’s Van Siclen Avenue on the A/C line into “Van Halen Avenue.” Seemingly perturbed by the lack of press, he states on the post, “I left it 4 days for someone else to head to Brooklyn and take the credit but nobody stepped up, so ok, I guess I’ve got to do it myself… you’re welcome.” Wilson told people it was “easy” to do: “A famous person dies, look up the name of a subway stop and put a sticker over it to memorialize the person.” In the last two years, NYC stations saw official tributes to Prince and David Bowie, done by Spotify at th...

Fiona Apple Live-Debuted Three Fetch the Bolt Cutters Songs at the New Yorker Festival

When Fiona Apple released her masterful new album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, in April the world had already gone into lockdown. She wasn’t able to bring those powerful songs to life on tour, and didn’t opt for livestreaming like many other artists chose to do this year. However, the singer-songwriter agreed to perform at the New Yorker’s virtual festival over the weekend, where she finally live-debuted three songs from the record: “I Want You to Love Me”, “Shameika” and the title track. The event marked Apple’s first live performance in three years. In addition to the set, Apple also chatted with New Yorker writer Emily Nussbaum, who penned a fantastic profile about her ahead of the album’s release. Watch her performance and see clips from the interview below. [embed...

Pierre Kezdy of Influential Punk Band Naked Raygun Dies at 58

Pierre Kezdy, bassist of Naked Raygun, the Chicago band who was a favorite of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and producer Steve Albini, has died (Oct. 9) at the age of 58. The cause was cancer, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Grohl said he was about 13 when Naked Raygun “changed everything I knew about music,” Lou Lombardo, manager of Naked Raygun, told the Sun-Times.  The future Nirvana drummer saw the band at an all-ages show at Chicago’s storied Cubby Bear club. In his Sonic Highways documentary for HBO about the city’s music scene, Grohl says the gig “just turned my world upside-down.” About 30 years later, Grohl asked Naked Raygun to open for Foo Fighters when his band played Wrigley Field in 2015. At the 2013 Riot Fest in Chicago’s Douglas Park, Fall Out Boy invited Raygun frontma...

Stevie Nicks Teams With Dave Grohl on ‘Show Them the Way’

After Fleetwood Mac found itself at the center of skateboarding meme culture for the last week, Stevie Nicks is back to remind us of what makes her so revered in the first place: music. The vocalist returned on Friday with her new single “Show Them the Way” in quite a while and features production by famed studio wizard Greg Kurstin and everyone’s favorite superstar drummer Dave Grohl. The track is inspired by a dream Nicks had involving Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and John Lewis before the 2008 presidential election, as she mentioned in a recent Los Angeles Times profile. And the six-minute track certainly feels like a dream with its thudding drums and Nicks’ soothing tone. If anything, it should get listeners pumped for Nicks’ 24 Karat Gold the ...

Van Halen Manager Says Classic Lineup Reunion Tour Almost Took Place in 2019

Van Halen manager Irving Azoff confirmed what many had hoped for when David Lee Roth leaked the news a few years ago: a new 2019 tour that would have reunited the band’s classic lineup for a stadium tour. In a Pollstar interview, Azoff said that the hoped-for tour was close to happening, but couldn’t due to the late Eddie Van Halen’s health issues. “We had lots of stops and starts, but there was every intention of doing a summer stadium tour (in 2019), and as the cancer moved around, [Van Halen] was physically unable to do it,” Azoff said. “There is no doubt in my mind that it would have been massive.” “But I’ve never seen anybody fight the fight that [Van Halen] fought over the last 10 years, fighting the cancer,” he continued when describing the late guitarist’s battle. Azoff also l...
