Iconic, breathtaking, indelible—what can be said about Carl Cox‘s music that hasn’t already been said about Ultra‘s RESISTANCE Megastructure? The legendary DJ is embedded in the mythos of Ultra, a festival that is as vital to rave culture as Cox is to techno. He’s been throwing down in Miami for nearly two decades now, and the star of his legacy only grows brighter with each eye-popping RESISTANCE set. There’s no arguing the power of Ultra’s Main Stage, but the immersive Megastructure is the festival’s pièce de résistance. It’s here where Cox has enraptured the nation’s electronic music community since 2017. Carl Cox performs at Ultra’s RESISTANCE Megastructure. Rudgrcom But that wasn’t always the ca...
If you thought Ultra couldn’t top last year’s historic festival, think again. The organizers of Ultra Music Festival have revealed the first wave of artists confirmed to perform in Miami in 2023. And it’s more of a tidal wave. The lineup has more highlights than an Aaron Judge home run reel. Eric Prydz is set to bring his rare HOLO show to Ultra’s breathtaking RESISTANCE Megastructure, where techno pioneer Carl Cox will return after a captivating three-hour headlining set in 2022. Meanwhile, deadmau5 is primed for two collaborative performances: one with Kaskade (as Kx5) and another under his Testpilot alias with HI-LO, the techno nom de plume of Oliver Heldens. From the underground to the Ultra mainstage, the future rave genre is sinking its teeth into the electronic music zeitgeist. We recently sat down with MORTEN in Miami, where the Danish dance music star and future rave flag-bearer opened up in an intimate interview before appearing onstage at Ultra Music Festival with his parter-in-crime, David Guetta. In many ways, future rave is emblematic of the euphoric ethos of the return of electronic music in Miami after a brutal pandemic. Bridging the gap between dark techno and soaring progressive house music, the genre has inspired a post-electro wave of hungry music producers. “I think it’s limitless,” MORTEN said when we asked how big the future rave movement could become. We caught up with the trance music icon for an intimate interview in Miami ahead of his epic Ultra Music Festival 2022 performance. But for an aesthete like van Buuren, it comes easy. There’s no place like home for Ultra Music Festival. On Thursday (May 12), the dance fest announced that it will stay at Miami’s Bayfront Park through at least 2027, following the City of Miami Commission unanimously passing an agreement between the festival and the Bayfront Park Management Trust. This Trust manages the 32-acre park, which is located in the heart of downtown Miami on Biscayne Bay. The longstanding music festival has happened at Bayfront Park for much of its 23-year history, returning to the site this past March after a much-maligned outing at Miami’s Virginia Key in 2019 and two years off due to the pandemic. The 2019 edition of the festival in Virginia Key experienced myriad noise complaints and major transportation issues, including — as Billboard reported in 2019 — “ten...
There aren’t many festivals—if any—who do it quite like Ultra. The resplendent Ultra Music Festival is embedded in the mythos of Miami. And even though its annual hubbub has often been bemoaned by the city’s populace, one thing is certain: the festival is vital to Miami’s culture. Considering Ultra’s reputation as a bellwether for the festival landscape and its impact on Miami’s economy, the event’s organizers annually ensnare—and then enrapture—the international dance music hive mind. But despite the event’s staggering lineups, its production is a crucial part of why it is perennially considered one of the nation’s elite music festivals. Just ask Hardwell, who torpedoed a four-year hiatus to return to Ultra’s historic Mainstage at...
Hardwell‘s long-awaited return to Ultra Music Festival was an EDM comeback for the books. A new highlight real shared by the Dutch icon on his YouTube channel highlights the road to Ultra 2022. Oh, the places you’ll go, Dr. Seuss once said, with a little bit of spunk, ingenuity… and snorkeling gear? Last weekend, a man named Jack Davidson somehow made his way into Miami’s Ultra Music Festival by snorkeling through the nearby harbor. He dodged police boats and suspicious onlookers along the way, and a classic “Do it for the Vine” mentality ensured it was all caught on camera. And hey, who could blame him? After all, headlining performances by the likes of Alison Wonderland, David Guetta, Kygo and Hardwell (check out his full comeback set here) were at stake. Davidson was ultimately caught by police officers on patrol, but they were apparently so amused by his efforts that he was granted a free VIP wristband for the day. But the hilarity doesn’t end th...
Ultra Music Festival attendees were on good behavior at the brand’s flagship Miami event in 2022. The sold-out fest was as big a draw as ever, as 150,000 dance music fans descended upon Bayfront Park for three jam-packed days of action with David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Hardwell and many more. After two years on ice, Ultra returned in some ways smoother than ever. At least that was the impression some members of law enforcement had. Following the weekend, Miami police reported just 18 arrests in total: four on Friday, 10 on Saturday and four on Sunday. Most of those arrests were drug-related, according to CBS Miami.
