Barcelona’s domestic woes continue with Alaves 1-1 draw

Antoine Griezmann helped to salvage a point for Barcelona as their struggles in La Liga continued with another disappointing result; a 1-1 away draw against 10-man Deportivo Alaves on Saturday. The visitors, who had lost their prior two league matches, were behind in the first half after a goalkeeping blunder by Neto allowed Luis Rioja to open the scoring. Barca actually started the match brightly. Their gifted youngster Ansu Fati raced clear of the Alaves defence early on but could only strike his effort wide. However, the visiting defence appeared to lack confidence and looked vulnerable on the counter. Alaves left midfielder Luis Rioja tried to exploit this but brought a smart save out of Barca keeper Neto after fine play by Brazilian centre forward Deyverson. It was from another such A...

Champions League Match Preview, Team News and Predicted Line-ups: Krasnodar vs Chelsea

Chelsea return to Champions League action this evening with a trip to Russia to face Krasnodar, and they will be keen to pick up all three points following last week’s goalless draw with Sevilla. [embedded content] The hosts will also be looking to secure a win after drawing with Rennes last week, and while Frank Lampard’s side are favourites, the Blues can’t afford to belittle the Russians. The top spot in Group E of the Champions League is expected to be between them and Sevilla, but failure to win tonight could come at a price going forward in the competition. Chelsea head into the game on the back of another goalless draw at the weekend against Manchester United, but they will fancy their chances of earning victory tonight despite just a win in their last six games across all competiti...

Jamie Carragher praises Trent Alexander-Arnold display for Liverpool

Jamie Carragher raved about Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold on CBS Sports (10:30pm, October 27, 2020). The former Liverpool defender was impressed by the performance of Alexander-Arnold against FC Midtjylland at Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. The 22-year-old right-back started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, as Jurgen Klopp’s side won 2-0. Carragher was impressed with the England international and spoke highly of him. The Englishman said on CBS Sports (10:30pm, October 27, 2020): “There is one player, who I should mention, who was outstanding, and that was Trent Alexander-Arnold. “He was heavily involved in both goals. What’s interesting is that we have someone in the studio who actually burst onto the scene [Micah Richards] to actually be a...

The Porto Fairytale

Whenever there is a conversation about the greatest teams in Europe, we often name Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, AC Milan and Bayern Munich among the elite. In fact recently, 3 of the above have won Champions League titles and have been a treat to watch for these past 5 years. However, in all of the conversations, discussions and debates, the name of FC Porto is nowhere to be found. We know Jose Mourinho the “special one” but, what exactly what made him so special? This time, we talk about the forgotten ‘Great Team’ of Europe. We talk about Mourinho, we talk about the Porto fairytale that spanned two seasons, winning some serious silverware. After his brief but impressive stints at Benfica and Uniao de Leiria, Mourinho returned to Porto in 2002 as manager. It had an immediate effect o...

John Aldridge reacts on Twitter to Liverpool win against FC Midtjylland

John Aldridge has taken to Twitter to give his reaction to Liverpool’s win against FC Midtjylland at home on Tuesday evening. Liverpool have got the better of Midtjylland 2-0 at Anfield in the Champions League. After a goalless first half, the defending Premier League champions took the lead in the 55th minute through Diogo Jota. Trent Alexander-Arnold combined well with Xherdan Shaqiri before the right-back set up former Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Jota to tap home. Mohamed Salah secured the points for the Reds in their second Group D game in the third minute of injury time from the penalty spot. The Egypt international was brought down by Paulinho inside the box, and the forward made no mistake from the resulting spot kick. This was Jurgen Klopp’s side second successive win in the Cha...

Frank Lampard: Kepa Arrizabalaga out for Chelsea vs Manchester United

Kepa Arrizabalaga has been ruled out of Chelsea’s trip to Manchester United but Frank Lampard has said Petr Cech will not be drafted in as the Blues eye a long-awaited Premier League win at Old Trafford. Spain goalkeeper Kepa made yet another mistake in a 3-3 draw with Southampton last weekend after stepping in to replace Edouard Mendy, who missed out with a thigh injury. Mendy returned for a goalless Champions League draw with Sevilla in midweek instead of Kepa, who will not travel north to face United on Saturday due to a shoulder injury. Chelsea surprisingly added club legend Cech, who retired last year, to their Premier League squad but the 38-year-old keeper is not in the squad to take on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Lampard was asked about the status of Thiago Silva and Christian Pul...

Manchester United in buoyant mood ahead of clash with Chelsea

Manchester United will approach Saturday’s home English Premier League (EPL) clash with Chelsea in buoyant mood rather than in trepidation. This is after a week which has gone some way to banishing the gloom that was descending on Old Trafford. After going into this month’s international break with a 6-1 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, they have emerged from it with a couple of victories which have kick-started their campaign. Last weekend’s 4-1 win at Newcastle United was followed by a 2-1 victory away to Paris St-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League. For now at least, the critics have been silenced. Chelsea’s visit, however, presents a test of Manchester United’s upswing as they seek their first home league points of the season. This is in the wake of defeats by Crystal Palce and...

Liverpool players react on Twitter to Europa League win vs Ajax

Premier League champions Liverpool get off to a winning start against Ajax in the Champions League group stage opening game on Wednesday night. An own goal from Nicolas Tagliafico meant Liverpool returned home from Johan Cruijff Arena with full points. Jurgen Klopp’s side were left to bare bones in defence following the loss of talisman Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip, but they did enough to leave Amsterdam with a clean sheet. Ajax did test Liverpool, and there were nervy moments at the back too. Adrian nearly made a big blunder with a goal kick with the shot being blocked by Dusan Tadic in the box. Fabinho produced a smart tackle to block Tadic, and later produced an acrobatic clearance to Tadic’s lob off the line. And Ajax looked to exploit any weakness out of possession by...
