Coke or Crack?: DOJ Revises Drug Case Rules To Combat Racial Disparities

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Pete Marovich / Getty The Department of Justice is now moving to right a historic wrong by instructing prosecutors to eliminate racial disparities in cases in drug cases at the behest of U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. On Friday (Dec. 16th), Garland issued directives to federal prosecutors to pursue the same charges and establish equivalent sentencing for both cocaine powder and crack cocaine. The current law sees people who are convicted of possessing 28 grams of crack cocaine receive a mandatory sentence of five years in prison. That same sentence is only given to those who are convicted of possessing nearly twenty times that amount in the powdered form of cocaine. The previous situation highlighted how Black and Latinx defendants were unfairly g...

As the runoff election to decide who will occupy the Senate seat from Georgia approaches, many on the right wing are lending support to the GOP’s candidate Walker. Former House Speaker Gingrich, who also represented Georgia, went on conservative personality Charlie Kirk’s show to endorse Walker over the incumbent Democratic Senator Warnock with an eye-raising opinion. Gingrich expressed that despite both candidates being Black, he felt Walker stood out more because of his business acumen and struggles with mental health. “I think that Herschel Walker has the courage, the integrity to be a...

Related Stories In response, Texas Senator John Cornyn (R) shared Obama’s post with a caption that naturally led people to believe this man wanted to bring back seg...
