Turnstile and Founding Guitarist Brady Ebert Are ‘Parting Ways’

Brady Ebert, the founding guitarist of Turnstile, has left the band. In an Instagram story posted on Friday afternoon, the band released a statement to announce his departure. “Turnstile and guitarist Brady Ebert are parting ways,” the statement says. “We are deeply grateful for our time together. Our love for him continues and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward. Love, Turnstile.” In 2010, Ebert co-founded Turnstile with singer Brendan Yates, bassist Franz Lyons, and drummer Daniel Fang. Pat McCrory joined in 2015 as a rhythm guitarist. Ebert appeared on each of the band’s three albums. But on Turnstile’s current tour, which included a crowd-pleasing set at Lollapalooza, Ebert wasn’t on stage. Instead, friend of the band Greg Cerwonka filled in for him. He was last seen playin...

Turnstile are extending their Love Connection tour with a host of fall dates featuring support from Snail Mail and JPEGMAFIA. The run resumes October 3 at Brooklyn Mirage in New York and wraps November 19 in Boston. Pre-sale tickets will be available starting tomorrow (June 22) through the band’s Web site. SPIN‘s 2021 Artist of the Year has also released a new video for the song “New Heart Design” from the album Glow On. The clip was shot on 16mm film during the first leg of the Love Connection tour and was directed by band member Brendan Yates in tandem with frequent collaborator Ian Hurdle. [embedded content][embedded content] “I think we never intentionally try to expand [Turnstile’s sound],” Yates told SPIN last year of Glow On, which has propelled the Baltimore-based band to new level...

See Turnstile’s MMORPG-Animated Video for ‘Underwater Boi’

Last month’s SPIN cover star, Turnstile, shared the video-game-inspired video for “Underwater Boi.” [embedded content][embedded content] “Underwater Boi” is off the band’s latest, GLOW ON. The video was directed and edited by Turnstile’s own drummer, Daniel Fang, and it’s animation was influenced by the realm of 2003’s MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). The hardcore punkers are slated to kick off a sold-out stint throughout North America this month. “The Turnstile Love Connection Tour” will support GLOW ON, and will feature opening acts Citizen, Ceremony, Ekulu, Truth Cult, and Coco & Clair Clair. The spring trek includes two performances during both weekends of Coachella in April. Even though all dates are sold-out, maybe you can get lucky searchin...

The Best Punk of 2021

Welcome to the latest edition of Difficult Fun! Each month, SPIN will spotlight the best punk on the planet and discuss it here, with the ambition of challenging preconceived notions of what the four-letter word actually means and, ideally, entertaining readers in the process. Purists, piss off! Everyone else, enjoy. There was hope at the beginning of 2021, and then there was a slap in the face. We have languished; we have endured an ever-mutating and unforgiving plague; we have survived insurrections from domestic terrorists; the Gulf of Mexico caught on fire. I’d say humanity has proven resilient over the course of the last 12 months, but that’s a word utilized to cast meaning on the meaningless, to make suffering some patriotic endeavor. You could call Sex Pistols’ “No Future” a revelan...

Our 21 Favorite Concerts of 2021

Ah, 2021 — the year live music (mostly) roared back. After 18 months of livestream drudgery, it felt like unicorns dancing on a rainbow every time someone so much as plugged in a guitar. It was a year of “post-vax concert stories,” where every show was a hard-won reunion, a triumphant homecoming, and a victory all at once. Strangest of all, it was the year when we found ourselves getting misty just being able to look out at a crowd, marveling at the gift of singing shoulder-to-shoulder with someone other than our cats. Okay, so we’re still a little sentimental. The point is, in a year when every show was a grand slam of catharsis and joy, it was slightly painful to narrow this list down. But after not getting to do one at all in 2020, we are ecstatic and proud to give you some of the highe...

The 30 Best Songs of 2021

A pair of rappers pulling off the best Tom Tom Club sample since Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” (G Perico & Rucci), an iconic New Wave band trafficking in tongue-in-cheek nostalgia (Duran Duran), a blackgaze act embracing their love of vocal harmony (Deafheaven), and psych-rockers using the shopping mall as a metaphor for capitalist greed (My Morning Jacket) — SPIN‘s 30 Best Songs of 2021 offer something for everyone. For our latest year-end track recap, we kept our overall sorting process the same as 2020: For a cut to be eligible, it needed to be one of two things: 1) a stand-alone single released in 2021 or 2) part of an album issued in 2021. 30. Beatrice Deer – “The Storm” The sound is so simple that, at first, it feels almost formless: a primal drum groove, shards of metallic elect...

The 30 Best Albums of 2021

Back in June, SPIN published The 30 Best Albums of 2021 (So Far), rounding up everything from mainstream rock to experimental hip-hop. Six months later, we’re back with our year-end recap — and it’s interesting how, even though the stylistic balance has stayed consistent, the picks themselves haven’t. While this list also covers a lot of ground, only six of those earlier records wound up in our final tally. Below, you’ll find massive R&B collaborations (Silk Sonic), trendy pop breakouts (Olivia Rodrigo), big-ticket indie-rock (The War on Drugs), prog-metal giants (Mastodon), and acclaimed indie-rap (Benny the Butcher & Harry Fraud). Looking back at Pandemic Year Number Two, when the music industry forecast seemed to shift on a daily basis, perhaps these changes are only fittin...

In Orange County, Programme Skate & Sound Provides an Authentic Punk Rock DIY Venue

Every so often — a few nights a week when things are going smoothly — Chris Gronowski and his staff clear out the entire center of Programme Skate & Sound’s main room. T-shirt stands are moved to the back. Skateboarding accessories are pushed to the side. Cases of vinyl LPs, CDs and cassette tapes are tucked away into corners. In a matter of minutes, the space fills with crowds swirling like the eye of a hurricane, nearly 100 twisted bodies of both fans and artists flying through the air. Hardcore dancing and mosh pits ensue, all with the understanding that no damage is to be done to the venue or its merchandise — a mutually beneficial policy strictly enforced by the very teenagers and young adults who pack into Programme on a regular basis. After the Fullerton skate shop and record st...

The 50 Best Rock Bands Right Now

First, let’s take care of the obvious. Despite the still-persistent narrative that such music is “dead,” there are way more than 50 excellent rock bands out there. And there’s no exact science to scooping the cream of the crop. Our list includes arena-packing veterans but also semi-obscure indie acts who’ve barely escaped their basements. There are no hard rules here. Our methodology was simple: ask our writers and staff which rock bands feel worthy of recognition right now. But we did aim for a wide scope — throughout, you’ll find flavors of psych, post-punk, hardcore, metal, even country. If it feels like rock, it’s on the table. Consider SPIN‘s 2021 roundup — just like last year’s — a thermometer, taking the temperature of modern rock in all its various mutations. Altın Gün Ho...

Difficult Fun: September 2021’s Best Punk

Welcome to the latest edition of Difficult Fun! Each month, SPIN will spotlight the best punk on the planet and discuss it here, with the ambition of challenging preconceived notions of what the four-letter word actually means and, ideally, entertaining readers in the process. Purists, piss off! Everyone else, enjoy. This should be a space for Turnstile worship. Seriously. (Read that here, written by the ineffable Zoe Camp three years ago. SPIN was early to the melodic hardcore band’s greatness.) This month’s column should open with a commendatory review of their latest album, Glow On, and a thoughtful meditation on how some positive punks found funk and dance rhythms in their breakdowns and saved a genre in repose. Those arguments exist elsewhere. If anything, I’m mostly excited that Turn...
