Martin Scorsese to Direct Gangs of New York TV Series

Martin Scorsese will executive produce and direct the first two episodes of a new Gangs of New York TV series, Deadline reports. The new show won’t be an adaptation of Scorsese’s 2002 crime drama Gangs of New York, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz. Instead, he and writer Brett Leonard are returning to the source material, looking at new characters and storylines from Herbert Asbury’s 1927 non-fiction book, The Gangs of New York. Asbury’s history covers several decades of organized crime, beginning in the second half of the 1800s and continuing through prohibition. Scorsese’s film was set in 1862, and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, which he directed and executive produced, was set in the 1920s, so perhaps this new...

Keanu Reeves Exits The Devil in the White City TV Series

Keanu Reeves has left Hulu’s upcoming The Devil in the White City series, Variety reports. A replacement has yet to be cast. Based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book of the same name, The Devil in the White City centers on Daniel H. Burnham, the architect of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer who, in more sensationalized accounts of his life, constructed a “Murder Castle” to lure visitors into his grip during the event. Reeves was supposed to portray Burnham, while Holmes has still not been cast. The Devil in the White City was going to be Reeves’ first major television role. The Hulu series was the last in a long line of potential adaptation for the book: Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner attempted to bring the story to the...

A Friend of the Family Review: A Slow-Burn True Crime Series That’s Truly Harrowing

The Pitch: When Robert “B” Berchtold (Jake Lacy) moves with his family to a quaint, peaceful town in rural Idaho, he becomes an instant hit with the Broberg family. The Berchtolds and the Brobergs instantly become inseparable: they vacation together, dine together, and attend the Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints together. The catch? B has a secret sexual obsession with the Brobergs’ eldest daughter, pre-pubescent Jan (Hendrix Yancey/McKenna Grace). Despite his charming, charismatic goody-two-shoes persona, B can only keep his infatuation hidden for so long. Based on the grisly true story that yielded the popular 2017 Netflix documentary Abducted in Plain Sight, A Friend of the Family sees B’s fixation on Jan spiral out of control, resulting in a whirlwind of abuse, deception...

HBO Confirms The Case Against Adnan Syed Sequel

HBO is developing a sequel to their 2019 docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed, leading up to and following the infamous Serial subject’s release from prison. The Case Against Adnan Syed explores Syed’s conviction after his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee went missing and was subsequently found dead in 1999. The smash true crime podcast Serial reignited interest in the case, which is garnering media attention again this week after a Baltimore City judge vacated Syed’s conviction and ordered his release from prison. Prosecutors are still deciding if they want to try Syed again after new information was found suggesting the involvement of two more suspects in Lee’s murder: “The State no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction,” said Baltimore State’s Attorney Maril...

Billy Milligan’s Other Personality Did It in Trailer for Netflix True Crime Doc Monsters Inside: Watch

Dissociative identity disorder — formerly known as multiple personality disorder — goes on trial in the new trailer for the Netflix true crime documentary Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan. The film premieres September 22nd. Milligan’s case captured the national imagination when he was imprisoned in 1975 for serial rape and armed robbery. Rather than typical protestations of innocence, Milligan and his psychiatrist pleaded guilty by reason of insanity, with the wrinkle that the accused couldn’t remember his crimes because they were committed by one of his other personalities. At least one of those purported alter egos makes an appearance in the new trailer. “It still bugs me when they call me Billy,” a smirking Milligan says. “But I don’t say much. I don’t say anyth...
