At the 2021 Grammy Awards on Sunday, Brandi Carlile participated in the In Memorium segment by covering John Prine‘s final song “I Remember Everything”. That turned out to be the first taste of Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine Vol. 2, the sequel tribute album to the original Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows released last June. Vol. 2 is expected some time this fall. Vol 1. was headlined by covers from My Morning Jjacket, Conor Oberst, and Justin Vernon. Back in August, the world mourned the death of Americana songwriter Justin Townes Earle. Now, father and country legend Steve Earle has paid tribute to his late son with a new covers album called J.T., and it’s streaming below via Bandcamp. J.T. comes today (January 4th), on what would have been Justin’s 39th birthday. It consists of 11 covers, all pulled from throughout Justin’s discography. There are favorites such as “Harlem River Blues” (2010) “Champagne Corolla” (2017), and “The Saint of Lost Causes”, taken from Justin’s 2019 album of the same name, which proved to be his last. Now, he’s already set to return with more new music — well, new takes on old music, at least. Ward has announced a Billie Holiday tribute album called Think of Spring, due out December 11th via ANTI-. The collection is a reimagining of the majority of Holiday’s 1958 record Lady in Satin, along with the classic “All the Way”. Ward previously performed all the Lady in Satin tracks during a Los Angeles show in 2018.
