Gunmen attack Borno villages, kill five
Gunmen, believed to be either Boko Haram or ISWAP, on Saturday, attacked three communities in Borno State, killing five herdsmen and stealing 480 cows, a government official has said. Sources said the insurgents, who were all armed with assault rifles, attacked three villages – Moduri, Kelewa and Ngudori in Magumeri Local Government Area around 6.30 pm on Saturday. Magumeri is one of the local government areas that share conventional boundaries with Gubio and Monguno where ISWAP staged coordinated repeated attacks that claimed the lives of over 120 persons. The local government is listed among the unsafe communities of Borno State by both the state government and the United Nations. Ekiti opens sexual assault referral centre for victims
The Ekiti State Government has established a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) where victims of rape and other molestations will receive medical and psychological attention, rather than being abandoned to suffer. The government also assured that it will strengthen the adopted policy of naming and shaming of perpetrators of rape, by publishing their photographs on the state’s website and pasting in public palaces. Osun records two new coronavirus cases
Osun State has recorded two new cases of coronavirus and discharged two other patients. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, in a statement, explained that with the discovery of two new cases, the number of active cases in the state has risen to four, as of May 24. The statement read, “Today (Sunday), two COVID-19 patients were discharged from our isolation and treatment centre to join their families after they tested negative for the virus. “Sadly, we also recorded two new cases, bringing the number of active cases in the state to four. Thankfully, they are all stable and responding to treatment. “In total, 34 patients have been successfully treated and discharged from our isolation centres across the state out of the 44 confirmed cases in the state.” Get more stories like...
NAFDAC warns against use of Chloroquine for coronavirus treatment
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has, again, warned Nigerians against taking Chloroquine as treatment for Coronavirus (COVID-19). “Nobody should buy Chloroquine and use it. If you have COVID-19, go to a doctor. We have warned Nigerians and shall do that again. Do not take Chloroquine,” Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s Director General, told newsmen on Thursday in Abuja. “The delay in approving some of the drugs for treatment of the virus is because of the clinical trials the agency is carrying out on them. “So far, no group or individual has proffered any solution to the treatment or management of the pandemic,” she said.
