One positive element that the pandemic has provided the music industry has been the emergence and support of queer and transgender artists. The industry has predominantly been operated by men and there has been a serious inequality in pay, but now we’re seeing more LGBTQIA+ people and women being promoted and making executive decisions at major music companies. Titled “TRANS*CENDENTAL: TRANS*EXCELLENCE,” ADP.FM’s playlist is comprehensive and consists of music by Honey Dijon, Big Freedia, Pabllo Vittar, and many more. In the wake of the tragic death of trailblazing electronic music producer SOPHIE in January 2021, the late artist’s friends and collaborators have launched a fundraising effort for Transgender rights. The campaign—an art auction called God Is Trans—will raise money for the Trans Justice Funding Project, a community-led fundraising initiative aimed at justice and equality for Trans people around the globe. This week at the Melbourne venue Yah Yah’s, Simona Castricum, a renowned DJ and transgender woman, was booted from the club’s restroom after being accosted by security. “A male security guard stood in the doorway of the women’s bathroom and pointed at me and yelled at me quite aggressively ‘out of the bathroom,’” she recounted in a statement to The Age. “I said, ‘I’m a woman, I’m a trans woman.'” Despite Castricum’s response, the security guard continued to yell until another woman came to the musician’s aid.
