‘Vax Live’ Concert Raises $302 Million, Exceeds Vaccine Goal

Selena Gomez hosted the show, which was attended by several thousand fully-vaccinated concertgoers who cheered on performances by Eddie Vedder, Foo Fighters, J Balvin, H.E.R. and Lopez, who enjoyed a duet with her mom. Ben Affleck, Chrissy Teigen, Jimmy Kimmel, Sean Penn and David Letterman served as special guest speakers. Vax Live was one of the largest concert gatherings in Southern California since the coronavirus pandemic roiled the world more than a year ago. Organizers called the event the country’s first large-scale music event for a COVID 19-compliant audience. Media and production staff needed to show a negative COVID-19 test before entering the stadium. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. Insomniac Ruling Upheld Despite Appeal That Judge Was Heavily Medicated

The dispute is linked to a disagreement over the future of the How Sweet It Is music festival, which ran from 1999 to 2001. Rotella helped revive and finance the festival in 2005 but had a falling out with Alper and Ballou over the future of the event in 2010. Alper and Ballou claimed Rotella created a competing event called Beyond Wonderland, which still operates today, and that they were owed a piece of the festival. The legal fight went to arbitration, where the case was heard by Schiavelli, who eventually ruled against Alper and Ballou, saying the men bore most of the responsibility for the collapse of their relationship with Rotella and Insomniac due to their “cavalier and essentially non-negotiable attitude.” Schiavelli also noted that the lawsuit wasn’t filed against Insom...

Aaron Neville Announces He’s Retiring From Touring

“The time has come for me to stop ripping and running on the road,” Neville wrote. “I waited for someone to invent a way to beam me from show to show but no such luck. … Unfortunately, the grueling nature of travel and the schedule needed to make a tour work has become less than desirable. The current climate of our world brought me many realizations. Life is short and I’d like to spend my remaining time on this earth being less hurried.” Still, Neville said his love for singing has not waned. “It provides so much joy for me, at least as much as for those listening, if not more,” he said. “Don’t see this as a permanent goodbye, by the grace of God, I will keep making more music and may show up at a special event or concert down the road,” he promises. Neville hasn’t performed live si...

NYC Is Reopening, But Concerts Are Still Restricted

In New York and New Jersey, capacity limits for most businesses will be replaced with a new distance-based maximum capacity. Retail, food services, gyms and fitness centers, amusement and family entertainment, hair salons, barber shops and other personal care services will be limited by the space available for patrons or parties of patrons to maintain the required social distance of six feet.  The entertainment industry, however, will still be limited. As of May 10 in New York, the outdoor social gathering limit will increase from 200 to 500 people. Beginning May 19, the indoor social gathering limit will increase from 100 to 250 people.   Music venues can exceed the social gathering limits of 500 people outdoors or 250 people indoors if all att...

Over 7,750 independent venues and talent organizations have successfully submitted applications for Shuttered Venue Operators Grants, according to the Small Business Administration. Shapiro spoke to THR from the New York Stock Exchange, where just a few hours earlier he rang the opening bell alongside Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, executive chairman Patrick Whitesell, UFC chief Dana White and other top Endeavor executives. Shares in the company initially popped by about 10% over the $24 per share IPO price, before settling just above its IPO price. The company has grown over time in large part from acquisitions, spanning sports, entertainment, marketing and events. Shapiro says that will continue now that it is publicly traded. “We are going to continue to be thoughtful but also aggressive when we see acquisition opportunities that enable our growth to accelerate,” Shapiro says, noting that the company has made 20 acquisitions over the past 5 years. “In any respective are...

2021 Helpmann Awards Canceled Due to Pandemic

LPA chief executive Evelyn Richardson says it’s simply “not feasible to proceed” with presenting the 2021 edition, after the industry’s nightmarish experience over the past 12 months, “Our industry is only now getting back to work and there is still more to be done to ensure we can fully operate in every state and territory at 100 percent capacity in all indoor and outdoor venues,” she continues. “For our live music sector in particular, some significant challenges remain before it can fully reactivate.” Richardson says the organization will use this gap-year to “take a step back and reimagine the Helpmann Awards for 2022 onwards.” The Helpmann Awards were established by LPA in 2001, and in 2018 expanded its program into a two-evening s...

UK Primed to Resume Live Shows While Rest of Europe Struggles

While the United Kingdom appears poised to resume full-capacity outdoor shows this summer, many other European markets will be forced to wait until at least the fall. Greek doesn’t expect indoor shows to resume in continental Europe before the end of the year, but he does expect them in the United Kingdom by September. And with most U.S. artists choosing not to tour Europe due to a paucity of tour dates and the possibility of new virus restrictions, local U.K. and European acts will take center stage as headliners. Dieter Semmelman, CEO of Berlin-based Semmel Concerts, sees “no chance” of a return to live music events in Germany this summer and, instead, is focused on saving about 300 concerts scheduled for October through December. “It’s not a good feeling” that other markets are ahead of...

Red Rocks Amphitheatre Resumes Concerts With High Hopes, Smaller Crowds

The last major concert in the Denver area before the pandemic shut down the live industry was Post Malone at the Pepsi Center on March 12, 2020. Red Rocks was no different — although it reopened briefly in September for shows by Denver heroes Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats and a capacity crowd of just 175 — but now that vaccinations against COVID-19 are widely available and an increasing amount of research indicates that outdoor gatherings are relatively low risk when masking and social distancing are employed, local public-health officials signed off on reduced-capacity Red Rocks shows. “All of those things taken into account, we feel comfortable letting this move forward,” says Bob McDonald, director of the Denver Department of Public Health and Environ...
