Splendour In The Grass Reschedules to 2022

The popular outdoor event was initially announced for July 2020, then, due to the health crisis, those dates were shifted to October 2020, then July 2021, to November 2021 and now July 2022. With lockdowns in place in the country’s two biggest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, and the states of New South Wales — home to Sydney and Byron Bay — breaking an unwanted record of 886 infections Saturday (Aug. 21), hosting a festival in the months ahead is a tall order. “With vaccine rollout progressing more slowly than anticipated, we have made the decision to move the 20th Anniversary edition of the festival to July 2022,” says Splendour in the Grass co-founders Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco. “We are confident that moving the festival to July 2022 will finally see us enjoying Splendour...

Clive Davis on ‘Welcome Back NYC’ Concert, the ‘Power’ of Central Park & Being ‘Vigilant’ About COVID

The big show is right around the corner. Have there been any last-minute developments or surprises? There have been no surprises and really no changes. The thing that has knocked me out has been the number of artists, as they have been rehearsing on the Great Lawn in Central Park, who have either called, texted me or emailed me saying what a wonderful occasion this is and the power of the venue. Apart from the purpose of the concert, we all know the history of who has played in Central Park and the iconic concerts there. The stage that has been constructed for the event is also awesome, and all of these artists are so knocked out by it all. It’s been so gratifying to hear from them as they prepare for tomorrow. I’m wondering about the shows or performances you’ve seen in your life. What ha...

Every 2021 Concert & Festival Canceled Due to COVID-19

Alan ParsonsThe Grammy-winning musician announced Aug. 20 that his U.S. tour would be postponed due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. “Nothing is more important to me than the safety of my band, crew, the concert staff, and most importantly of course, you — the fans,” he explained in a statement. “This has been a very difficult and devastating decision — we were so thrilled to be returning to the stage for the first time in over a year and a half. The world could use more music right now, however, it just isn’t safe yet for us to come together indoors for events like concerts.” Nine Inch NailsNine Inch Nails announced Aug. 19 they will not return to the stage in 2021. “When originally planned, these shows were intended to be a cathartic and celebrator...

How Risky Are Concerts? We Asked an Infectious Disease Expert

Billboard spoke with Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, senior scholar at Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security and an authority on infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness, to raise these questions. Adalja, 45, is a go-to pandemic expert, sharing his views on CBS This Morning, NPR and the BBC, among many others during the past year and a half. It turns out Adalja knows his way around concerts, too: A longtime skateboarder, Adalja grew up listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Metallica and Rancid and saw the original Lollapalooza twice. “We’ll have COVID cases 20 years from now,” he says. “Then we have to come up with a way to be able to go about our lives, making risk calculations jus...

L.A. County Renews Mask Mandate for Outdoor ‘Mega Events’

Per L.A. County, an “outdoor mega-event” is one that hosts upwards of 10,000 people in one location. “These events are considered higher risk for COVID-19 transmission,” and the owners and operators of such events are charged with enforcing the policy. The order clarifies recommendations and states that individuals must always wear a face mask “except while eating or drinking, which is the limited time during which the mask can be removed briefly to eat or drink, after which it must be immediately put back on. Patrons, customers or guests must be seated at a table or positioned at a stationary counter, ticketed seat or place while actively eating or drinking indoors, or while actively eating or drinking at an outdoor mega event.” The news comes as the county reported on Monday that five mo...

Baja Beach Fest Day 2: Farruko, Anuel & More Perform Euphoric Sets Amid Stricter Safety Measures

Farruko, smiling from ear to ear, donning an MLB-styled BBF jersey and bedecked in diamonds that are basically shooting rainbows, is wailing out the chorus to one of the most hard-hitting songs of the summer, the anthemic EDM banger “Pepas.” Before him, a sea of festivalgoers (30,000, to be exact) are losing their minds. It’s Day 2 (Aug. 14) of Baja Beach Fest, the largest Latin music-focused festival in the Americas to resume since the coronavirus pandemic. The two-weekend fest kicked off Aug. 13 in Mexico’s Rosarito Beach, with reggaeton stars Ozuna, J Balvin and Karol G among the headliners, and with strict COVID-19 protocols in place.
