12 Plane Movies That Prove It’s Better to Wing It

How does one define a plane movie? A plane must be involved, of course, but it goes beyond that: Could this story be set anywhere except the familiar rows of a 747? Does it echo with the lived experiences of millions of passengers worldwide? Does the film capture what it means to fly through the sky in machines that once filled us with wonder, but now have become grimy with the mundanity of modern travel? Would this movie be a movie you’d enjoy watching on an airplane? In honor of the upcoming release of the Gerard Butler-starring Plane, we pay tribute to this hard-to-define subgenre by offering up the movies we deemed most iconic in terms of planes. Some may not feature a ton of on-plane action. Some might not be what you immediately think of as a plane movie. But they all seek to bring a...

The era of crewed fighter aircraft will continue for at least a little longer, as Paramount Pictures has announced a theatrical re-release of Top Gun: Maverick. When Is Top Gun: Maverick Available to Stream?

Top Gun: Maverick is finally soaring onto streaming services after a years-long, much-delayed take-off that often flew against most studios’ streamer-friendly pandemic strategies. The Tom Cruise-starring sequel to the 1986 Tony Scott-directed blockbuster Top Gun seemingly revived the post-COVID theatre-going experience as it shot past $1 billion and climbing at the worldwide box office, while also rekindling a certain bygone era of action movie between co-stars Cruise, Miles Teller, and a whole new cast of call-signs to learn. Maverick is now set for its biggest launch yet with digital and physical releases approaching. Here are the details on how to stream Top Gun: Maverick. Top Gun: Maverick Used A.I. to Recreate Val Kilmer’s Voice

Tuned-in Top Gun fans know that Val Kilmer and his character Tom “Iceman” Kazansky have a few things in common, and perhaps their most notable similarity is the fact that in Top Gun: Maverick, both of them have lost the ability to speak due to cancer. Kilmer does, however, have one line of spoken dialogue in the new sequel, and it took some artificial intelligence to bring it to life. Kilmer — whose throat cancer treatment reduced his voice to a rasp back in 2014 — announced last year that he had partnered with the software company Sonantic to realistically recreate his old speaking voice for the documentary Val. Using hours and hours of audio, this process was used again for Kilmer’s appearance in Top Gun: Maverick. Sonantic used what they call a “voice engine” to teach the...

Kenny Loggins Talks ‘Danger Zone’ Return For ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

For Kenny Loggins, the highway to the “Danger Zone” has been one hell of a ride. As he explains in his upcoming Still Alright: A Memoir, due out June 14, the iconic Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated musician wasn’t even among the top choices to record the high-octane number written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock for the 1986 Top Gun soundtrack. But, through a series of events, Loggins went on to rock the song, which became arguably his most synonymous hit, instantly cemented in pop culture as a quintessential ’80s anthem. Although “Danger Zone” was a solid number when Moroder and Whitlock wrote it, Loggins had to tinker with the tune — chord changes and lyrics — for the final product to be a massive hit. In fact, as he notes in his memoir, Loggins did enough to me...

Top Gun: Maverick Review: Tom Cruise Goes Full Throttle In a Sequel That Does the Original Justice

The Pitch: It may have taken 36 years, but even pandemic delays couldn’t keep Tom Cruise away from the danger zone. When viewers are reunited with Captain Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, one of the military’s best-ever fighter pilots is still a Navy man, working on experimental aircraft after decades of avoiding promotions that would pull him out of the cockpit. But the brass, personified here by a very cranky Jon Hamm, has a new assignment for the ace: Train up a team of hotshot youths for an incredibly difficult (dare we say… impossible) mission into enemy territory. While a dozen officers are selected as candidates for the task, the most prominent are a very Maverick-esque pilot known as Hangman (Glen Powell) and Rooster (Miles Teller), the grown-up son of Maverick’s tragically dece...

Lady Gaga Soars With ‘Hold My Hand’ From ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Soundtrack

Lady Gaga is heading back to the big screen, this time with “Hold My Hand,” the soundtrack to the long-overdue Top Gun sequel. The new single was produced by Gaga and BloodPop, with additional production by Benjamin Rice, while the motion picture version features additional production and score by “Axel F” creator Harold Faltermeyer alongside Hans Zimmer, the legendary composer for the screen. “Hold My Hand” is a “love letter to the world during and after a very hard time,” explains Gaga in a statement. “I’ve wanted you to hear it for so long.” Explore Explore See latest videos, charts and news See...

Tom Cruise Won’t Be Scar-Jo’d Out of His Money, Mission: Impossible and Top Gun Delayed

Tom Cruise is dodging bullets and the movies aren’t even out yet. For many years now, the star of Mission: Impossible 7 and Top Gun: Maverick has preferred to structure his salaries with a low upfront payout and big bonuses, and after watching this gamble cost other A-listers big bucks during the COVID crisis — Scarlett Johannson says she lost $50 million because of how Disney handled Black Widow‘s pandemic release — Cruise has to be happy that both his blockbuster sequels have been delayed. As Deadline reports, Top Gun: Maverick has been pushed back to May 27th, 2022 (from November 2021), while Mission Impossible 7 will retract the repelling rope until September 30th, 2022 (from Memorial Day weekend 2022). Cruise likely had a say in the decision, si...
