Nigeria-based fintech solution, NowNow, has said that it will continue to upgrade its services to attune to current realities, such that will drive economic and social growth. Founder of NowNow, Sahir Berry, while speaking on how COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the financial space recently, mentioned that Nigeria needs to strengthen its fintech space more than before. Berry stated that it was important for Nigeria to tap into the trends and prospects of fintech given the country’s large unbanked or underbanked. He added the company recognised this gap in Nigeria, which informed its investment in the space. “In 2017 we identified that one of the two big problems in Nigeria was lack of youth empowerment and financial inclusion. With a population of almost 100 million youths, we found that ac...
SPIN launched in the peak MTV era, when an innovative — or even just salacious — music video could make or break an artist. Thirty five years later, YouTube is an obligatory part of any promotional push, but no one’s counting on a mind-blowing clip to sell a record. (The views do often matter — just not always the creativity.) A sizable chunk of the best videos came out during the ‘90s alternative bloom, when directors like Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry and Hype Williams experimented with the style and substance of this malleable medium. But the format hasn’t died with MTV: artists like Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar and Miley Cyrus all made this list for a reason — and it wasn’t to meet a decade quota. Here are the top 35 from the last 35. Ready or not, here we go again. – Ryan Reed 3...
Charitable fundraisers these days generally try to bring in money for their causes by listing just about anything they think will sell for a decent amount. In the music world, that means signed instruments, exclusive records, collectible memorabilia, and pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. Likewise, you generally won’t see anything autographed by Tool in there. Maynard James Keenan and crew aren’t prone to lending their signatures to raise money. But the upcoming auction in support of the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund apparently isn’t your typical fundraiser. In addition to the usual lot (headlined by an exclusive Holy Diver-painted Les Paul and collection of old Beatles collectibles), the Icons & Idols: TRILOGY Rock ‘n’ Roll Auction will fe...

As COVID-19 numbers continue to grow, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that some pretty well-known public figures likely had contracted the virus. You can add Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan to that unfortunate list. In an interview with AZ Central, Keenan told the paper that he had contracted COVID-19 in February and that the virus was just as bad as you’d expect. “It was ugly,” the singer admitted, “I survived it, but it wasn’t pretty.” Even though time has passed, Keenan said that he continues to deal with the side effects of the virus, including constant coughing. “I still have the cough. Every other day, I have these coughing fits because my lungs are still damaged at the tips. And I just got over the inflammation that was going o...
St. Vincent’s Annie Clark reminisced about a simpler era in a recent Instagram post, sharing an old video featuring a backstage solo cover of Tool’s “Forty Six & 2.” Watch below. The brief clip was captured prior to a gig promoting 2017’s MASSEDUCTION. It shows her pulling off an impressive double-duty: singing while plucking the knotty riff on acoustic guitar. “TOOL as preshow warm-up during MASSEDUCTION solo tour,” she wrote in a caption. “Pink bunnysuit hanging in background. Will always love this band. Miss you guys.” Clark is a noted Tool fan. During a BBC Radio 6 appearance in 2018, she played both “Forty Six & 2″ and Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell” when asked which riffs she wishes she’d ...
Jordan Olds took his Two Minutes To Late Night series to a new level on Monday, releasing a star-studded cover of Rush’s “Anthem.” Check out the video below. The line-up features Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher and Mutoid Man/Cave In’s Steve Brodsky on guitar, Tool’s Danny Carey behind the drums, Primus’ Les Claypool on bass and Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez handling vocals. The home-recorded, quarantine-style video features some pretty impressive green-screen action, cool duplicating effects and, of course, killer instrumentation. “Uhhh… Holy Moley. It’s Claudio Sanchez, Bill Kelliher, Les Claypool, Danny Carey, and Steve Brodsky covering a Rush song,” the video’s caption reads. “We’re just as surprised as you are. This is our 15th bedroom cover made with the support of Pat...
At first, Tool fans were kinda bummed. Word of a Maynard James Keenan side project — while appealing on paper — was met with apprehension and dismay, as it threatened to further delay the studio sessions for the follow-up to Ænima, which they’d already been impatiently waiting years for. When the album finally hit record store shelves on May 23, 2000, those fans weren’t skeptical anymore. As they’d learn fast, A Perfect Circle was no Tool clone. The music was largely written before Keenan ever became involved. Guitarist Billy Howerdel, the creative strength behind the avant-rock outfit, was a former guitar technician who’d worked for Nine Inch Nails and Faith No More. He became friends with Keenan in 1992 after meeting on tour; Tool were opening for Fishbone, who Howerdel was working for. ...
