Oscar winner Ariana DeBose kicked off the 75th Tony Awards with a rousing mashup performance of songs from classic Tony-winning musicals such as Cabaret, Company, The Phantom of the Opera and Hair, while wearing a sequined outfit inspired by Michael Jackson, the subject of the 10-time-nominated musical MJ. “Let’s just say, for many of you it’s been a roller coaster,” DeBose said of the past two years in her opening monologue, noting that she was presiding over the first large scale, in-person Tony Awards ceremony since the COVID-19 pandemic began. “I am so proud that the theater is becoming more reflective of the community who adores it, and in doing so, has gained new performers, new creatives, new fans. It has shown us stories that h...
A gender-flipped revival of Stephen Sondheim’s classic 1970 musical Company and the new play The Lehman Trilogy each won five awards at the 2022 Tony Awards. The awards were held at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday (June 12). MJ, a jukebox musical built around the music of Michael Jackson, won four awards. Myles Frost won best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for playing the superstar. He is the third performer in four years to win a Tony for playing a pop icon, following Stephanie J. Block as Star (Cher) in The Cher Show and Adrienne Warren as Tina Turner in Tina. Here are noteworthy facts and feats associated with this year’s Tony Awards. Moulin Rouge! the Musical is just the sixth show in Tony history to win 10 or more awards in one night. The Producers (2001) is the all-time champ with 12 wins, followed by Hamilton (2016) with 11 and Hello, Dolly! (1964), Billy Elliot: The Musical (2009), The Band’s Visit (2018) and Moulin Rouge! the Musical with 10 wins each. Moulin Rouge! The Musical did even better at the Tonys than Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film Moulin Rouge! did at the Oscars. (It helps that musicals and dramas have separate categories at the Tonys, whereas they must compete with each other at the Oscars.) The film received eight nominations, including best picture and best actress for Nicole Kidman, but won in just two categories...
David Byrne’s American Utopia was honored with at the 74th annual Tony Awards, which were held at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City on Sunday night. It marked Byrne’s first time winning a Tony, and leaves him just an Emmy Award away from obtaining EGOT status. (Byrne was nominated at last week’s Emmys, but lost the award for Outstanding Variety Special to Hamilton.) Later on during the Tony Awards, Byrne returned to the stage to perform “Burning Down the House.” Watch the replay below. For obvious reasons, it’s been a weird and shortened Broadway season. Still, the 74th annual Tony Awards are soldiering on, celebrating the work of those productions that were able to put on shows before the March shutdown of New York’s theater district. That includes Jagged Little Pill, the musical based on Alanis Morissette’s iconic album of the same name, which leads the 2020 Tonys with 15 nominations. To be fair, there was a considerably smaller field this year than is typical. Because the pandemic forced Broadway’s shutdown, the cutoff date for Tony-eligible productions was bumped to February 19th, 2020. (Jagged Little Pill officially opened on Broadway in December of last year.) That meant that only 18 plays were eligible for nominations, down from 34 in 2019. There is also one fewer...
