The organizers of Tomorrowland are making their intentions clear that they want to return bigger than ever in 2022. After receiving an initial green light at the national level, the iconic Belgian event reeled from a last second rug-pull when local officials refused to grant organizers essential event permits in order to make their 2021 edition happen. This year marked the second consecutive cancellation of Tomorrowland due to pandemic related concerns. The festival typically draws in 400,000 attendees annually. Now facing mounting debt, Tomorrowland says it’s essential they be granted permission to host the event across three weekends in 2022. “We really have to do this to cushion the financial hangover,” Tomorrowland’s Debby Wilmsen told Het Laatst...

On August 21st, hundreds of Dutch music organizations carried out the #UnmuteUs protest through six Dutch cities. Hoping to make their voices heard amid a lack of clarity from the government regarding the future of music festivals, over 70,000 people marched in protest of the current COVID-19 restrictions impacting the arts sector. While many in the Netherlands were hopeful of the return of live music events this summer, the Dutch government reportedly had other plans. In July, officials announced an extension of a ban on music festivals in the country—lasting until at least September 19th—due to ongoing risks to public health. In the wake of the recent extension of a ban on music festivals in the Netherlands, over 450 festival organizers have planned a protest. After months of calling for clarity from the Dutch government, it seems their patience is wearing thin as they reportedly still have not received any guidance from officials about a timeline to host multi-day events. The catalyst was the demise of Tomorrowland, whose organizers were led on for months after the government indicated a favorable outlook for the festival’s 2021 edition. However, the iconic dance music fest was forced to cancel after its request for an event permit was abruptly denied by officials. ID&T, the nation’s largest festival production entity, recently took the Dutch government to court with the hopes of rece...

Just one month ago, Belgium’s iconic Tomorrowland festival was abruptly cancelled due to COVID-19 safety concerns. To access the CTS, event attendees must first download the mobile CovidSafeBE app, where they can then upload proof of vaccination and recent COVID-19 test results. Similarly to the EU Digital Covi...
