A Man Called Otto Owes Kate Bush an Apology

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for A Man Called Otto.] Up until a certain point in 2022, Kate Bush was having a great year: Thanks to a little show called Stranger Things, her 1985 single “Running Up That Hill” became the song of the summer, making an entire generation sit up and appreciate the English singer/songwriter. But then came a film called A Man Called Otto, and perhaps the worst use of a song in a movie I’ve ever seen. What A Man Called Otto does to “This Woman’s Work”… It isn’t just on the nose, it’s a middle finger jammed right up the left nostril. There are no shortage of reasons why A Man Called Otto, the Tom Hanks-starring adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s acclaimed novel, doesn’t work. Many of them have to do with the choice to cast America’s Dad as a suicida...

Tom Hanks, Father of Nepo Babies, Defends Nepotism: “It’s a Family Business”

We hate to break it to you, but chances are, at least one of your favorite actors is almost certainly a “nepo baby.” Famous children of famous parents have been a hot-button topic online recently, but Tom Hanks has a different term for it: “Family business.” The latest business venture? Hanks and his son Truman both appear in the upcoming comedy A Man Called Otto. Hanks seems to think the web of nepotism is inevitable: “Look, this is a family business,” Hanks told The Sun. “This is what we’ve been doing forever. It’s what all of our kids grew up in. If we were a plumbing supply business or if we ran the florist shop down the street, the whole family would be putting in time at some point, even if it was just inventory at the end of the year.” Hanks has four children, all of whom have ...

Tom Hanks Returns As David S. Pumpkins on SNL: Watch

Just in time for Halloween, David S. Pumpkins made his long-awaited return to Saturday Night Live. Tom Hanks made a surprise appearance on last night’s episode of SNL (Oct. 29th) to reprise the beloved character alongside his skeletal comrades played by Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan. (SNL alum Moynihan also appeared earlier in the episode to reprise his Drunk Uncle character). Hanks previously portrayed David S. Pumpkins twice during SNL’s 42nd season in 2016. The success of the character led SNL to create an animated Halloween special that aired in 2017. However, because of Moynihan’s departure from the show following Season 43, there had not been another opportunity for Hanks to reprise the character — until last night. Related Video Below, you can watch SNL’s new David S. Pumpkins sketch...

Tom Hanks Says He’s Only Made Four “Pretty Good” Movies

Wit his usual self-deprecating humor, Tom Hanks said in a new interview with PEOPLE that, “I’ve made a ton of movies,” and added, “Four of them are pretty good, I think.” Hanks did not specify which four films (Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, and Toy Story 4 perhaps?), but the quote came as he was promoting his just-announced debut novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, due out May 9th, 2023. The occasion prompted him to reflect on the act of filmmaking. “No one knows how a movie is made — though everyone thinks they do,” he said. “I’ve made a ton of movies (and four of them are pretty good, I think) and I’m still amazed at how films come together. From a flicker of an idea to the flickering image onscreen, the whole process is a miracl...

A League of Their Own: The Mysterious Identity of the Black Woman Who Throws Back the Ball

UPDATED: This is the story of a mystery. Unlike a good Agatha Christie page-turner, it’s not that dramatic. But it is a sad one — though maybe, just maybe, the ending hasn’t been written yet. Thirty years ago, one of the greatest sports movies ever made was released in theaters. Based on the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, founded during World War II when most able-bodied men (including ball players) were fighting overseas, A League of Their Own featured two fictional sisters (Geena Davis and Lori Petty) battling over their own issues during the inaugural season of women’s professional baseball. The film became a modern classic for so many reasons: the powerful direction by Penny Marshall, an all-star cast that also includes Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, Ma...

Elvis Review: Baz Luhrmann’s First Biopic Is Not As Absurd and Ahistorical As You Might Expect

The Pitch: Baz Luhrmann, the Australian maximalist behind such audaciously stylized films as Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby, has taken on his first biopic, and it’s a monster. Although a few attempts have been made at dramatizing the life story of Elvis Presley, most notably Kurt Russell in John Carpenter’s 1979 film also titled Elvis, Luhrmann’s movie is by far the biggest and boldest yet, with an $85 million budget dwarfing every other Presley biopic combined. Austin Butler, a 30-year-old actor who made his name with several teen and tween-friendly TV roles on the Disney Channel and The CW, is the unlikely star of this massive biography of the King of Rock’n’Roll. An Anaheim native whose most prestigious previous project was a small role as a member of the Manson Family in Once Upon ...

Disney+ Unveils First Look of Tom Hanks in Live-Action Pinocchio Remake

Pinocchio is the latest beloved Disney classic to get the live-action remake treatment. Before it arrives exclusively on Disney+ this September, the streamer has shared the first look of the film, which stars Tom Hanks as Geppetto, the endearing wood-carver with a knack for puppetmaking. Robert Zemeckis will direct this new telling of Pinocchio, the motionless marionette who becomes transformed into a real boy (with a few caveats). While the character was first introduced in Carlo Collodi’s 1883 children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio, it was Disney’s 1940 cartoon that helped make him so recognizable. 13-year-old Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (The Haunting of Bly Manor) will star as Pinocchio, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as his trusty “conscience” Jiminy Cricket. Other announced cas...

Forrest Gump’s Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis, and Eric Roth to Reunite in New Film

The trio behind the 1994 blockbuster Forrest Gump — Tom Hanks, director Robert Zemeckis, and screenwriter Eric Roth — are teaming up again for a film adaptation of the graphic novel Here, Deadline reports. Centered in one room, Richard McGuire’s graphic novel follows the lives of several people who inhabit the space over an extended period of time. Roth and Zemeckis are collaborating on the film’s script, while Zemeckis will direct the picture and Hanks will star. Here is set to be produced by Playtone and ImageMovers. While not many details exist about the project, Here is likely to be a big event for the trio, who all won Oscars for Forrest Gump. The film will mark the second collaboration between Hanks and Zemeckis in recent years after the duo’s live-...

The SNL Christmas Episode That Wasn’t

If you want proof of how off-guard New York City was for its biggest COVID surge in months, look no further than Saturday Night Live. Somehow the show had both assembled three strong home-produced pandemic episodes back in Spring 2020, and in an even more impressive/foolhardy feat, went back on the air the following fall. From September 2020 through last week, SNL hadn’t missed a planned episode or even retreated back to filmed-at-home pieces. This has arguably helped further cement the show’s cultural-event status that rankles its harshest critics. Virtually everything about the television landscape has changed over the past five years, but Saturday Night Live still does twentysomething live episodes per season that a fair number of people actually watch as they air. That was, until this ...

Tom Hanks Builds a Self-Driving Robot in Trailer for Apple TV+’s Finch: Watch

While starring in yet another Hollywood post-apocalyptic film titled Finch, Tom Hanks takes on the role of an inventor who builds himself a robot best friend. Watch the newly released trailer below to see him in action. “It all happened so fast,” Hanks’ titular character somberly explains in the opening moments of the clip. “There was a solar flare. Goodbye crops and food, goodbye everything. So I hid, frightened and so alone.” Then, the camera pulls back and reveals Finch is talking to a canine companion in a manner not too dissimilar from Hanks’ conversations with Wilson, the volleyball in 2000’s Cast Away. The two survivors won’t be alone for too much longer, as the robotics engineer builds an android named Jeff (played by Caleb Landry Jones) to join them in fleeing an incoming storm. A...

Chet Hanks Is an Anti-Vaxxer Despite His Parents Getting COVID-19 Last Year

Do you remember when COVID-19 went from being a scary infection to a worldwide pandemic? In the eyes of most Americans, it was right around when Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson both tested positive, meaning not even science-believing celebrities with all the money in the world could escape it. Thankfully US citizens can now get the vaccine for free to prevent serious illness from coronavirus. Yet that hasn’t stopped Chet Hanks, their infamous son, from making anti-vaxxer comments online despite his parents’ deadly health scare just last year. As Complex points out, the 31-year-old posted a video on Instagram pretending to use his influence — for some reason, Chet Hanks has more than half a million followers — to promote getting the COVID-19 vaccine. He then interrupted himself to say it was a jo...
