Gryffin and Tinashe have teamed up for a scorching dance anthem, “Scandalous.” Gryffin is currently gearing up for two of his largest headlining shows ever at Red Rocks Ampitheater and LA State Historic Park, respectively, as well as preparing for the release of his sophomore album, Alive, the follow-up to 2019’s genre-bending Gravity.  Released via Darkroom/Interscope, “Scandalous” is sprinkled with Gryffin’s signature house music sound. Meanwhile, Tinashe’s powerful lyrics grab hold and pull us through an anthemic, edgy arrangement replete with impressive vocal gymnastics. “Show me how you do the things you do / it blows my mind,” she sings as bright arpeggios and pulsing bass subtly rumble underneath. Harris today unveiled “New to You,” a sultry, R&B-inspired cut featuring Normani, Tinashe and Migos’ Offset. Fans will recall Offset’s work in “Slide,” a bubbly cut from Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 that remains one of the album’s most popular singles. The 30 Best Albums of 2021

Back in June, SPIN published The 30 Best Albums of 2021 (So Far), rounding up everything from mainstream rock to experimental hip-hop. Six months later, we’re back with our year-end recap — and it’s interesting how, even though the stylistic balance has stayed consistent, the picks themselves haven’t. While this list also covers a lot of ground, only six of those earlier records wound up in our final tally. Below, you’ll find massive R&B collaborations (Silk Sonic), trendy pop breakouts (Olivia Rodrigo), big-ticket indie-rock (The War on Drugs), prog-metal giants (Mastodon), and acclaimed indie-rap (Benny the Butcher & Harry Fraud). Looking back at Pandemic Year Number Two, when the music industry forecast seemed to shift on a daily basis, perhaps these changes are only fittin...

Tinashe Taps Kaytranada, Wax Motif, Kito for Expansive New Album, “333”

At only 28 years old, the superstardom of Tinashe has already lived a lifetime. Now, the prolific alt-R&B artist is back with 333, the latest installment in her ever-evolving oeuvre of work.  Released independently on August 6th, 333 is the fifth studio album from Tinashe—and the first to truly highlight her uncanny abilities to absorb, transform and inspire. From the drum and bass structure of “SHY GUY” to the poptronica echoes of “The Chase,” the influences behind the project’s 16 tracks are crystal clear.  Yet, it’s how Tinashe has repackaged those references that’s truly masterful. Remember: Tinashe came up as a DIY artist, and her talents span beyond songwriting and singing to include producing, mixi...

SPIN Daybreaker: Peach Fuzz

Another whirlwind of a week is coming to a close and there’s lots to reflect on and hopefully learn from. Just like life, any themes explored through music can all be classified as moments to find something new and exciting about ourselves. This week, the roundup is the epitome of discovering music to discover yourself. It is an amalgamation of all the best emotions we encounter in this lifetime: angst, self-absorption, selflessness, curiosity, love, confusion, confidence, you get it. These artists are setting the new standards of music – that is, blurring the lines, doing what they want, and focusing their attention to expressing themselves wholeheartedly instead of trying to create more boundaries for creativity to adhere to. They’re truly making the industry embrace what it is to b...

Electronic artist ZHU has always looked towards the future, but 2020 gave him more of a reason than ever. While trapped inside for most of last year, the Grammy-nominated virtuoso forged his latest LP, DREAMLAND 2021, with the intention of taking body, mind, and soul to a more optimistic soundscape of his own design. “I don’t believe that music, dancing, [or] the freedom of expression will be suppressed for much longer,” ZHU said in a press statement. “They can’t—that’s against human nature.” ZHU began his project with the intention of lighting up dancefloors, believing in their power to transcend and enable people to come together. Cultivating sounds by way of this mantra, the acclaimed artist has created another innovative work of art that seamlessly combines genre, style and mood. DREAM...

Watch KAYTRANADA and Tinashe’s Haunting “The Worst In Me” Music Video

KAYTRANADA has dropped the curtain on the official music video for “The Worst In Me,” his stunning electronic-soul collaboration with Tinashe. Directed by Arnaud Deroudilhe, the sultry video combines the spellbinding sonic flair of KAYTRANADA with the seductive allure of Tinashe and funnels them through a Halloween lens. Dark orange hues, satin robes, and vampire fangs all make appearances, serving as a siren song to the protagonist’s fate. The video serves as a stellar accompaniment to the original track, which was a standout cut from his Grammy-worthy sophomore LP, BUBBA. Last month, KAYTRANADA doubled down on the wild success of the record by releasing all of its instrumentals, which stripped the vox from each track and offered a rare barebones glim...
