Now in its eight year, the National Cannabis Festival will go for two days for 420 weekend at RFK Stadium's Festival Grounds.
Gorillaz have always embraced the spirit of collaboration, and during their show in Los Angeles on Friday night (Sept. 23), Damon Albarn’s virtual band had a whole lot of special guests on hand. As Rolling Stone reports, Beck, Tame Impala, Schoolboy Q, Thundercat, Del the Funky Homosapien, De La Soul and Bootie Brown all joined Gorillaz at the KIA Forum in Los Angeles. Beck came out to perform “The Valley of the Pagans” from 2020’s Season One: Strange Timez and returned for the world premiere of “Possession Island,” from Gorillaz’ star-studded upcoming album Cracker Island. Kids today … with their memes, vapes and disdain for all things old. Don’t they know what they’re missing, like the satisfaction that comes with learning how to play and eventually master an actual instrument that isn’t a laptop? You’d be forgiven for ascribing such a sentiment to a local boomer or aging music critic, but when articulated by DOMi (22, keyboards) and JD BECK (19, drums), it carries a little more weight. That’s because the two musical prodigies are making it cool again to be a virtuoso and aren’t shy about saying so — an attribute at the heart of their long-awaited debut album, NOT TiGHT. The pair met in 2018 at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim, Calif., and have been making music ever since, dropping jaws with their instrumental panach...
Famed Atlanta rapper JID has joined forces with a handful of the world’s greatest electronic music producers for The Forever Story, his third studio album. One of the album’s undeniable highlights is “Lauder Too,” its final track. In a high-profile collision of Grammy-winning artists, James Blake and Thundercat joined forces to produce the hypnotic hip-hop record, which features a gritty verse from Ravyn Lenae. It’s effectively a sequel to “LAUDER,” a brooding cut from 2017’s The Never Story, JID’s breakout debut album. Another crowd-pleaser comes with “Can’t Punk Me,” an energetic track featuring EARTHGANG. Here, renowned DJ and producer Kaytranada crafts a funky beat befit for the spitfire flow of JID. Gorillaz have drafted Thundercat for their latest new song, “Cracker Island,” which was produced by the group in tandem with Greg Kurstin and Remi Kabaka Jr. The high-energy track has been a part of the Gorillaz live show since “the world’s biggest virtual band” returned to the road this spring and finds vocalist 2D (aka Damon Albarn) singing about what sounds like a cult “planting seeds at night to grow a made-up paradise.” Indeed, Gorillaz have apparently set up shop in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and launched a Web site inviting fans to join “The Last Cult,” led by group member Murdoc. “It’s nice to be back,” says 2D. “I’m well into our new tune. It brings back weird and scary memories of stuff that hasn’t happened yet.” It’s not clear whether “The Last Cult” might also ...
The wacky world of the little yellow Minions from the Despicable Me film franchise will be enhanced by the suitably eclectic soundtrack to the movie Minions: The Rise of Gru, which hits theaters July 1. The film is set in the 1970s and tells the origin story of super-villain Gru, so it’s only natural that the Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack, also due July 1 from Decca, comprises mostly covers of memorable songs from that era by such artists Phoebe Bridgers (The Carpenters’ “Goodbye to Love”), Thundercat (Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like an Eagle”), H.E.R (Sly and the Family Stone’s “Dance to the Music”) and St. Vincent (Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown”). One of the only newly written tunes is an eye-popping, danceable collaboration that will serve as the lead single: Diana Ross’ “Turn Up the Sunshi...
Thundercat just shared “Satellite,” which appears on the soundtrack for Insecure: Music From the HBO Original Series, Season 5, the comedy series starring Issa Rae. [embedded content][embedded content] The soulful “Satellite” features funk musician Knower, YouTuber Louis Cole, and singer Genevieve Artadi, and, of course, Thundercat on bass. The track is out today via Atlantic. Other tracks on this season’s Insecure soundtrack include Saweetie’s “Get It Girl,” Mereba’s “Peaceful Glock,” and TeaMarrr’s “Pipe Dreams.” It is the HBO series’ final season. The Grammy-winning bassist is currently touring North America in support of his widely acclaimed It Is What It Is, and is scheduled to support the Red Hot Chili Peppers next year on their world tour. He only has f...

Despite 2020 being a pretty bad year, Haim did alright. Women in Music Pt. III was a success, spawning a number of great songs and several Grammy nominations, including for Album of the Year, the first time an all-female rock group got tapped for the nod. Now, the Haim sisters are back with an expanded version of that album and a little help from their close pals. Taylor Swift and Thundercat appear on new versions of “Gasoline” and “3 AM” respectively. Listen to Haim’s remix of “Gasoline” with Swift below. [embedded content] Late last year, Haim released their own take on “Christmas Wrapping,” which addressed the crazed chaos that was 2020 and also featured Thundercat. Haim’s “The Steps” was named one of our best songs of 2020. You can read our July 2020 cover story on them ...
