Jack White is calling on the major labels — Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group — to build their own vinyl pressing plants amid explosive growth in the format that has led to industry-wide backlogs. White made the request via an open letter and accompanying video released on Monday (March 14). “With industry-wide turnaround times for vinyl currently leaning towards the length of a human pregnancy, it’s obvious, in a world so contingent on being of-the-moment and timed just right (a single, an album, a tour etc.), these timelines are the killers of momentum, soul, artistic expression, and far too often, livelihoods,” White wrote in the letter. White, who owns the Detroit-based Third Man Pressing plant — opened in 2017 — with his independent label Third Man...

Last year, Dave Chappelle surprise-released a new special following George Floyd’s murder. Titled 8:46, it was released on YouTube after being recorded on June 6 at one of the outdoor shows he hosted near his home in rural Ohio. Now, that special is coming to vinyl. Chappelle is teaming with Jack White’s Third Man Records to release a super limited edition version of the collection. The B-side will feature poet Amit Sulaiman who recites “My Insides Out” and “We Must Win,” which was also recorded in Ohio. Proceeds from the sales will go to the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. “When I was a student at Duke Ellington, the teachers instilled in me the notion of activism through art,” Chappelle said. “We need more soldiers for great causes on the stage.” The limit...

Jack White has been laying low for the better part of the past year, but his Third Man Records is dusting off a classic set for its latest Vault release. The Detroit native’s 2014 show at the city’s Masonic Temple has long been one of his most revered. White performed 38 songs over the course of three-and-a-half hours that included wide-ranging covers of Beck’s “Devil’s Haircut” to Hank Williams’ “Ramblin Man.” The collection will be released on four 180-gram colored vinyl LPs, with a slipcase cover with custom printed photo inner sleeves and will include shots from the night by official tour photographer David Swanson. On the same day that they dropped their first greatest hits collection, the White Stripes shared a new animated video for “Let’s Shake Hands.” “Let’s Shake Hands” is the first song Meg and Jack White recorded in their living room and originally released as a 7-inch single in 1998. The clip for the new video is directed by Wartella (Cartoon Network’s Mad), who has done other recent videos for The White Stripes. Today’s premiere follows the recent arrival of the Wartella-directed animated video for “Apple Blossom” as well as a never-before-seen live performance video of “Ball and Biscuit” from the White Stripes’ Oct. 22, 2003 show at Tokyo, Japan’s Shibuya-AX. We recently spoke with the White Stripes archivist/Third Man Records co-founder (and White’s nephew) Ben Blackwell, who gave us ...
If anyone knows the White Stripes, it’s Ben Blackwell. The Third Man Records co-owner/co-founder, and proclaimed lover of all things Archer Record Pressing, has been with Jack [who is also his uncle] and Meg White from their humble beginnings in Detroit in 1997 to international stardom to their demise in 2011. Blackwell still runs Third Man Records, which he co-founded with Jack White, and continues to preserve the White Stripes’ legacy, as cemented on their first greatest hits collection that’s out on Friday, Dec. 4. Blackwell, who remains the band’s official archivist, gave us the stories behind his favorite songs on the album, most of which you probably don’t know. The White Stripes haven’t been a band for nearly a decade, which means that a greatest-hits set is long overdue…and now finally its way. Simply titled The White Stripes Greatest Hits, the collection will be released on Dec. 4 through Jack White’s Third Man Records and Columbia. The 26-song set will feature 26 previously released songs that span’s the group’s decade-and-a-half career. A deluxe edition of the set (that includes a variant color vinyl) will be released as the latest Third Man Vault package and will include a bonus third vinyl of largely overlooked, previously scattered B-sides. That collection will also feature three Rob Jones silk-screen prints and a White Stripes-themed set of magnetic poetry. From that set, the group has released a ripping live version o...
Evergreen rock and roll titans The Hives have announced a new live album called Live at Third Man Records. The seven-song LP is due out September later this month, but the Swedish punk troupe are previewing it today with a kick-ass rendition of their 2000 hit “Hate to Say I Told You So”. The Hives are known for their high-energy sets (which they always perform while decked out in crisp suits), so it’s a little surprising that it took them this long to put out a live record. Regardless, the garage revivalists sound as tight as hell and electric as ever while busting out “Hate To Say”, a song that hasn’t aged a day in the 20 years since its release. Take a listen below. In addition to early-era staples like “Main Offender” and “Walk Idiot Walk”, Live At Third Man Records featu...
