Name Stephan Jenkins Best known for Peeling oranges. All citrus one peel, including that center thingy every time. My friends all marvel. Current city San Francisco en route to Los Angeles. Really want to be in Berlin, walking the streets at 2:00 a.m., dreaming of surf trips in Morocco. Excited about The release of Our Bande Apart (September 2021). You people are about to get freaked. My current music collection has a lot of Adrianne Lenker. Every song, she shows up with her whole self. And a little bit of Massive drum and bass. How does anyone jog without it?! Don’t judge me for It’s a tie. Doobie Brothers’ Minute by Minute vs. that fucking U2 album I can’t get off my phone. Preferred format Prefer vinyl, but end up strea...
Third Eye Blind fans can step back from that ledge, as the pop-rockers just released a new single from their upcoming album, Our Bande Apart (out September 24 via Megacollider Records). But not only is “Again” the latest track and video revealed by the ’90s chart-toppers, and it also features an appearance from Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino. “It’s noteworthy that I wrote this blissed out shoegaze song during the most lockdown part of the pandemic,” vocalist Stephan Jenkins tells SPIN. “As I was writing it, I could just hear Bethany’s voice, so I feel so fortunate that she was down to sing on it with us. This record was made with all of us playing together in the same room after being away from each other for a long time. To me, it sounds like a bunch of people who love each other excited ...
Before I lay into the Democrats for missed opportunities at the House impeachment hearing, let’s review a few facts from the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection: President Trump told his crowd of his supporters that he would walk with them to the Capitol to disrupt the election certification. He said, “If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.” So, they walked to the Capitol and they fought. They brought pipe bombs, metal pipes, bear spray, sledgehammers, baseball bats, knives, flex cuffs, tasers, riot gear, Confederate battle flags, Nazi paraphernalia, Trump merch, and a noose. Trump bailed on walking to the Capitol with his supporters. Instead, he went home, watched TV, and trolled Vice President Mike Pence. Trump’s supporters, per his urging to fight, overwhelmed...
When Eddie Van Halen died on Oct. 6, tributes flew in from just about everywhere. But one of the many things that has put a damper on 2020 (beyond the million other obvious ones) is that with the few live shows taking place, a slew of proper, fiery cover versions of Van Halen songs hasn’t really happened. At their socially-distanced show in Southern California last night, Third Eye Blind performed what seems to be the first live tribute to the guitar legend. The band opened up their show (which featured folks watching from their cars) with a version of “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” from VH’s self-titled 1978 debut. It’s pretty standard as compared to the original, but nonetheless, it’s a solid tribute done by Stephan Jenkins and company. Check it out below. [embedded content] You De...
Third Eye Blind founder, singer and songwriter Stephan Jenkins has interests that goes beyond music. He will be sharing his viewpoints on a variety of issues on SPIN. Today, as a new wave of COVID-19 sweeps America, he takes on those who refuse masks in public: Are you crying out to be liberated from the tyranny of wearing a mask in public and politely staying the fuck away from me at the market? Of course not. Like the rest of us, you’re tucked into your bandana trying to dodge those bastards. Recently, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered wearing masks in public as NYC opens this month. More cities will follow suit. This, along with the swill, promulgated from the top that public mask-wearing is PC weakness, suggests encounters with the aggressively unmasked increase as we all venture back into pub...
With everyone sequestered and self-quarantining due to the coronavirus, we’ve asked our favorite artists to come up with playlists that keep you entertained. This edition is by Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind: On the plus side of sheltering in place, you really don’t need to fuss over your playlist. I mean, there’s no one around to impress! Playlists are usually more performances than preferences. Heaven forbid someone might impugn your choice. Probably like me, when we get real with it, your true playlist is a mess — without consistent standards or taste. It’s just shit you like, a lifeline to get you through. Also if you’re like me, this reset means some things don’t fit anymore, like singing in cursive or autotune. Other things, though, suddenly sound great, like piano house and lo-f...
