After last night’s episode of The Simpsons, Morrissey’s official social media accounts put out a statement criticizing the show’s depiction of the aging crooner and a parody version of The Smiths. As it turned out, the statement was from Morrissey’s manager (which brought about another statement) and brought more attention to the legendary cartoon than it’s likely received in years. Now, Moz is back with another official statement — with this one seemingly coming from the man himself. “The hatred shown towards me from the creators of The Simpsons is obviously a taunting lawsuit, but one that requires more funding than I could possibly muster in order to make a challenge,” the statement says. “Neither do I have a determined business squad of legal practitioners ready to pounce.” A...
Last night, The Simpsons aired an episode inspired by the Smiths. As you can imagine, it took some turns and Morrissey wasn’t too pleased. In a post on his official Facebook page, the singer unleashed harsh criticisms at The Simpsons, following the beloved show’s portrayal of him. “Poking fun at subjects is one thing. But when a show stoops so low to use harshly hateful tactics like showing the Morrissey character with his belly hanging out of his shirt (when he has never looked like that at any point in his career) makes you wonder who the real hurtful, racist group is here,” he wrote. The post continued, saying the show has taken a “turn for the worst” before praising Saturday Night Live and lambasting The Simpsons for trying to “capitalize on cheap con...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-19T13:18:57+00:00“>April 19, 2021 | 9:18am ET Morrissey has unloaded on The Simpsons for a recent episode parodying the former Smiths singer. Sunday’s episode titled “Panic on the Streets of Springfield” saw Lisa become obsessed with a British singer named Quilloughby, whose likeness and persona was inspired by Morrissey. Lisa discovers Quilloughby and his band The Snuffs on a streaming service, and immediately becomes enthralled with “their brand of literate, sardonic music” and his “militant vegetarianism.” Quilloughby, who was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, soon appears in Lisa’s life in imaginary form — albeit as his 1980s self. However, after Lisa has an opportuni...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-04-15T18:27:35+00:00“>April 15, 2021 | 2:27pm ET This weekend’s episode of The Simpsons will have some fun at the expense of The Smiths and their cantankerous frontman Morrissey. As Exclaim points out, Sunday’s episode “Panic on the Streets of Springfield” sees Lisa become obsessed with a certain “depressed British singer from the 1980s”. While the episode’s synopsis does not cite Morrissey by name, a teaser image shared by writer Tim Long confirms the obvious: the character is indeed inspired by The Smiths’ former singer. Sadly, Big Mouth himself was apparently unavailable or unwilling to voice the character, so The Simpsons recruited another notable Brit in his place: actor Benedi...
The Simpsons has been renewed for two more seasons. Fox will continue to air new episodes of the iconic cartoon at least through its 34th season in 2023. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, renewing the longest-running scripted primetime show in TV history might seem like an obvious move, but the process has actually gotten a bit more complicated in recent years. After Disney purchased Fox’s assets for $72 billion back in March 2019, the parent company has a lot more say in where Homer, Marge and the gang end up in the vast multiverse of cable and streaming. For instance, after this next renewal period ends in two years, Disney could choose to move The Simpsons to a new network, which would give them the opportunity to negotiate a new deal to the tune of $1 billi...
Back in June, The Simpsons producers announced that white actors would stop playing people of color in an effort to diversify its voice cast. As Vulture points out, Sunday’s episode, titled “Diary Queen”, marked the last time Harry Shearer voiced the character of Dr. Julius Hibbert, who is Black. Going forward, Kevin Michael Richardson will take over the role. Richardson has worked on more than 70 Simpsons episodes in the past. He has also voiced characters on Family Guy, American Dad, and SpongeBob SquarePants. His casting on The Simpsons is the latest in a string of moves made by the show’s producers. Alex Désert was brought on to voice Homer’s co-worker Carl Carlson (previously played by Hank Azaria), and Jenny Yokobori was cast as wife of Comic Book Guy Kumiko Alber...
Once again, The Simpsons predicted the future decades before it happened. As several Twitter users have pointed out, Ted Cruz’s recent vacation getaway to Mexico while Texas suffered a catastrophic emergency echoed the scene in a 1993 episode of The Simpsons where Mayor Quimby essentially does the exact same thing. In the clip, which is taken from the episode “Marge in Chains” that originally aired back on May 6th, 1993, Mayor Quimby can be seen addressing his constituents during a press conference on TV. “People of Springfield, because of the epidemic, I have canceled my vacation to the Bahamas. I shall not leave the city,” he says, decked out in a suit and tie in front of his office backdrop. But then, a guy playing the steel drum walks in front of the camera, revealing that Quimby ...

Things on TV that are completely inappropriate for younger viewers. Things like the following half hour. Nothing seems to bother my kids, but tonight’s show, which I totally wash my hands of, is really scary. So if you have sensitive children, maybe you should tuck them into bed early tonight instead of writing us angry letters tomorrow. Thanks for your attention.” Tired of Smarch Weather? It’s hard to imagine how a Treehouse of Horror edition from this year could muster up anything scarier than what’s going on outside of Springfield. Appropriately, the next episode of The Simpsons doesn’t even bother trying to toe that line with comedic subtlety. In an exclusive Variety preview clip from the 31st (!) installment of the annual Halloween-themed Simpsons episode, Homer is presented with a frightening list of 50 reasons why Trump needs to be voted out on November 3rd. After considering writing in Judge Judy, Lisa comes to the rescue and reminds her father of all the insane bullshit that our president has served over the last four years. A literal scrolling list of political atrocities (kids in cages, gutting the E.P.A.) and cringe-worthy moments (serving McDonald’s to the ...

We’re willing to bet that a viral TikTok mashup of The Simpsons and M83 probably was not on your 2020 bingo card. But here we are. TikTok creator Teo Domani, who describes himself as the “CEO of mashups,” recently shared a mashup of M83’s iconic synthwave single “Midnight City” and Nelson Muntz‘s famous laugh from The Simpsons. You know the one—the shrill “ah-ha!” that the school bully cackles as he taunts others, including Bart. Domani’s clever mashup has gone haywire on the popular video sharing platform, racking up over 4.5M views at the time of this article’s publishing. Other zany mashups on Domani’s profile include amalgamations of Lil Baby‘s “Heatin’ Up” with the Super Smash Bros. B...
