Beyond the new album, Rundgren and Belew will team on the upcoming Celebrating David Bowie tour, with help from Scrote, Jeffrey Gaines, Spacehog’s Royston Langdon, ...

A long-rumored collaboration between producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) and The Roots rapper/lyricist Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) that has been in the works for more than a decade will finally see the light of day this summer. The pair’s album, Cheat Codes, is due Aug. 12 from BMG and is led by its first single “No Gold Teeth,” an UNCANNY-directed black-and-white video for which is out now. The 12-track Cheat Codes marks Danger Mouse’s return to hip-hop for the first time since his 2005-era work with the late MF Doom on The Mouse and Mask, credited to DANGERDOOM. It also follows Black Thought’s solo releases Streams of Thought, which came out in three volumes from 2018-2020. Doom is in fact featured on Cheat Codes, as are A$AP Rocky, Run the Jewels, Raekwon, Michael Kiwanuka, Joey Bada...
HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Paul Bergen / Getty Leonard “Hub” Hubbard, a founding member of the legendary Roots crew, has passed away. He was 62. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that he passed away on Wednesday (Dec. 15) at Lankenau Hospital and that his step-daughter India Owens confirmed his death. OG The Roots fans will remember Hubbard as the bassist who rocked sleeveless hoodies and had an ever-present chew stick while holding down fellow members Questlove, Black Thought and the late Malik B, who passed away in 2020, while on stage. However, Hub would stop touring in 2007 as he began to battle his illness—he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. Reportedly Hubbard, who lived in West Philadelphia, had been in remission until last month. “It happened quickly. He ...
Singing like a 19th-century pirate is one of the latest and oddest TikTok trends, and Jimmy Fallon and The Roots jumped on board (arggg) with their version of Olivia Rodrigo‘s viral hit “Driver’s License” in the style of a sea shanty. For the unfamiliar, a sea shanty is a traditional folk song once commonly sung as a work song to accompany rhythmical labor on board merchant sailing vessels. But you knew that. The Tonight Show host and his house band were in serious harmony on the song, which, in Rodrigo’s original form, has logged over 200 million listens on Spotify since it premiered on Jan. 8. Rodrigo recently spoke to SPIN about her “insane” success. The current shanty trend is credited to Nathan Evans, a 26-year-old postal worker and aspiring musician from Scotland. On Dec.&...
Source: Prince Williams / Getty Jaguar Wright is known for her amazing voice, but as of late, her notoriety has come from the bubbling hot tea that she has spilling on major players in the game. While many have remained silent publicly, it seems that Jill Scott has joined Erykah Badu with a seemingly indirect response to Wright and her claims. As previously reported, Jaguar Wright previously called out her former crew The Roots over alleged ill-treatment of Malik B, prior to his passing, among other things. The Philadelphia-bred singer also came at Common, who she claimed sexually assaulted her while they were in a relationship, before apologizing to Tiffany Haddish for the accusation. While The Roots were the initial target, the “Let Me Be the One” singer also set her crosshairs on Soulqu...
Phish singer Trey Anastasio has had a busy year — even in quarantine. Phish released a new album, Sigma Oasis, earlier this year and while alone in New York City, Anastasio put together a solo album titled Lonely Trip. On Tuesday night, Anastasio became the first in-studio guest on a late-night show since the coronavirus pandemic fully took hold of society in March. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Anastasio and the Roots tore through a version of the Lonely Trip track “I Never Needed You Like This Before.” The performance, socially-distant of course, took place in Studio 6A rather than the customary 6B due to spacing. Upon entry into the building (with just his guitar and amp in hand), SPIN has learned, Anastasio had to take a COVID-19 test on site. He test...
