In 1993, when Darryl Jones heard Bill Wyman was leaving The Rolling Stones, he called Mick Jagger’s team and asked to audition. Jones, who had already played with Miles Davis, Sting, Madonna, and Peter Gabriel, joined the band after two rounds of auditions. Since 1994’s Voodoo Lounge, Jones has played on every Stones album. In the new documentary Darryl Jones: In the Blood, premiering October 7, the band all express their admiration for his extraordinary gift. In the documentary, Mick Jagger says he respects him highly “as a player, as a musician.” So does Keith Richards. “Darryl is the most solid cat. My solid left arm, one of the best bass players in the world.” He thinks of Jones as an older brother, even though Richards is older. “It’s funny because I feel the same way about Keith. I f...
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has paid tribute to the band’s late drummer Charlie Watts, who died a year ago today (Aug. 24) at age 80. In a video montage posted on Twitter and set to the Stones’ 1974 track “Till the Next Goodbye,” Jagger says in voiceover, “I miss Charlie, because he had a great sense of humor. Outside of the band, we used to hang out quite a lot and have interesting times. We loved sports — we’d go to football, we’d go to cricket games and we had other interests apart from just music. But, of course, I really miss Charlie so much.” Thinking of Charlie today 💙 pic.twitter.com/zkP5CwZthe — Mick Jagger (@MickJagger) August 24, 2022 The Stones have pressed on without Watts, who joined the band in 1963 and never missed a show prior to his death. The Rolling Stones kicked off their 60th anniversary tour (phew, not many bands can say that) last night, Wednesday, June 1, at Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano. To celebrate the big night, the legends rolled out their 1966 staple “Out of Time” for the first time at a show. [embedded content][embedded content] “Out of Time” is off the Stones’ 1966 Aftermath and was written by the Glimmer Twins. According to Rolling Stone, and aside from the actual performance, the track has technically only been heard live by fans waiting outside of venues during concert rehearsals. Also back in 1966, Mick Jagger produced a cover of the song for ’60s rock singer Chris Farlowe, where a pre-fame Jimmy Page even featured on guitar. It turned out to be Farlowe’s hit single, which went to...
In recent years, the Rolling Stones have been steadily releasing shows from their archives. Today, the group announced they’re going deep into their catalog to unearth a set that has been bootlegged for years. In 1977, the Stones played a pair of 300-person capacity shows in Toronto and now the set is getting a proper release. Titled Live At The El Mocambo, the shows were debatably peak Stones. In addition to the announcement, the band released versions of “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll” and “Rip This Joint” as previews from what went down on those March nights. The set is out on May 13. You can pre-order it here. Rolling Stones Live At The El Mocambo Track List: 1. Honky Tonk Women (Live at the El Mocambo 1977)2. All Down The Line (Live at the El Mocambo 1977)3. Probably not even The Rolling Stones would’ve believed you if you said in 1962 that they would be embarking on their 60th-anniversary tour in 2022. Steve Jordan will fill in for the late, great Charlie Watts on drums. [embedded content] [embedded content] The Stones are performing in 14 European cities this June and July. Kicking off in Madrid, the UK rockers are scheduled to return Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium for the first time in over 50 years. They’ll also stop in Munich, Amsterdam, Vienna, Paris, Stockholm, and more. All ticket information can be found on the Stones’ website. There’s a line in Almost Famous where Stillwater’s manager (played by Jimmy Fallon) proclaimed: “If you think Mick Jagger will still be out there trying to be a rock star at age 50, then you are sadly, sadly mistaken.” I couldn’t help thinking about how unbelievably wrong that character’s prediction was last night, watching the three septuagenarians take the stage on the second of two shows in Los Angeles’ $5.5 billion SoFi Stadium just weeks after the devastating loss of drummer Charlie Watts. But them British Bad Boys carried on, with Steve Jordan filling in on drums. The Rolling Stones played their first tour date without drummer Charlie Watts in St. Louis. They kicked off their No Filter tour at The Dome at America’s Center. This also marks the band’s first time on the road since last year’s postponement due to COVID. Steve Jordan is filling in Watts’ seat behind the drum kit, who is a friend of the band and received a blessing from Watts himself to play. The beginning of the show was a heartfelt tribute to the iconic drummer, and when the band bowed at the close, a picture of Watts appeared behind them. The band upped the ante from the beginning of the performance, playing “Street Fighting Man” and “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It),” and even played the 2020 single “Living In A Ghost Town.” The Stones will stop in 12 cities to play 13 shows ac...
The Rolling Stones talked to journalist David Fricke about their upcoming No Filter tour, which is the first time the band will take the stage in over 50 years without their beloved drummer and friend, Charlie Watts. Watts died on August 24. Watts’ death shook the music world, as his tight, jazzy drum sound influenced drummers and musicians around the globe. A flood of tributes and messages came from musicians, celebrities, and fans in the days after his death, paying homage to the icon on social media. Coming from a jazz background as a fan and a musician, Watts brought the feel of genre into the Stones, who has always been rooted in heavy blues and R&B sounds. Watts’ close, quick jazz drum hits are what outline the Stones’ songs, enabling the rest of the band to bring in a brash guit...
The Rolling Stones dropped the video for the previously unreleased song, “Living In The Heart Of Love.” The song premiered on August 19 and is the first of nine tracks featured on the 40th-anniversary edition of Tattoo You. [embedded content] The track is reminiscent of the piping hot ’80s world the Stones unleashed in “Little T&A” and “Neighbours” off the original record. As many of the tracks off Tattoo You were refurbished from recording sessions in the ’70s, “Living In The Heart Of Love” also encompasses the bluesy mystique of their 1980 album, Emotional Rescue. The accompanying black-and-white video for the track was shot in Paris and directed by Charles Mehling. Starring Marguerite Thiam and Nailia Harzoune, the two take off on bikes for a night of drinking and s...
Although they posted tributes earlier in the week on their respective social media accounts, the surviving members of the Rolling Stones honored drummer Charlie Watts in a video uploaded to their Twitter account. Watts died earlier this week at the age of 80. The video plays “If You Can’t Rock Me” throughout the montage, including photos and videos of Charlie. An older Mick Jagger at a press conference pokes at Charlie: “If you have any questions, Charlie will answer,” while Ron Wood pipes in, “Here he is, the wonderful illusionist!” Charlie just laughs along with the crowd. Check out the tribute below. An outpouring of support has been shown for Watts and the Stones by many artists throughout the week. The band recognized Watts as the backbone of the group, and drummers deem him an innova...
