2022 Grammy Awards to Be Held April 3rd in Las Vegas

Following its postponement earlier this month, the Recording Academy has revealed a new date and location for the 2022 Grammys. The event will now be held April 3rd at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena (via Variety). Originally set for January 31st at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena (formerly the Staples Center), the Grammy Awards were postponed due to the COVID-19 Omicron surge. In moving to the MGM Grand and the new date, the Grammys have bumped the previously scheduled CMT Awards from the venue. That ceremony will be rescheduled to November. Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena hosted the Latin Grammys back in November, so the Academy is already familiar with the setup. That should make it easier to bring in returning host Trevor Noah and scores of music’s biggest names for the event. ...

2022 Grammy Awards Postponed Due to COVID-19 Surge

It’s the encore that nobody wanted: For the second year in a row, the Recording Academy has postponed the Grammy Awards due to concerns over COVID-19. However, an Academy spokesperson has now confirmed to Variety that the gala has been postponed to a new date still to be determined. Last year’s event was pushed back to March due to COVID-19 concerns, and the venue was changed from its home at Staples Center to the Los Angeles Convention Center to avoid crowding. The Recording Academy generally counts on revenue from ticket sales to boost its coffers, but the 2...

Harvey Mason Jr. on Recording Academy’s Future: ‘We Needed to Improve and We Needed to Evolve’

Still, he’s the first to admit there is plenty more progress to be made in his efforts to “modernize everything about the Academy,” including looking at new areas of revenue, making sure the Grammy voting process is as transparent as possible, and leading industry standards on diversity. Mason started his tenure forged by fire, as chairman of the board of trustees he stepped into the interim president/CEO position in January 2020 after the Academy suspended his predecessor, Deborah Dugan, for alleged misconduct only five months after she’d been hired. Dugan, who was officially fired in March 2020, filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission just days after being put on leave alleging sexual harassment, discrimination and improper business dealings by the Academy...

Via Billboard and Variety, the biggest change is the almost total elimination of the secret nominating committees which determine who is eligible to receive the awards. The Academy has also reduced the number of categories in which members may vote, added two new categories, and rolled out a reorganization of the “craft” categories (packaging, producer, and liner notes).
