On this week’s episode of SPIN Presents Lipps Service, host Scott Lipps spoke with sludge rockers the Melvins. In their conversation, Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover looked back at their career, which started in the late ’80s in Seattle. They discussed knowing Kurt Cobain, the current state of rock music, the influence of the Rolling Stones and Charlie Watts on them and a lot more. They also sat down for an acoustic performance, which you can hear at the end of the episode. Since it began in 2018, the acclaimed podcast has featured many of the biggest voices and personalities in music, including exclusive interviews with Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis, David Lee Roth, Shepard Fairey, Courtney Love, Dove Cameron, Mick Fleetwood, Nikki Sixx, Perry Farrell and many, many more. Matt Cameron expected to be on the road with Pearl Jam for most of 2020. In March, the band released Gigaton, their first new album in seven years, and they planned several U.S. legs and a European run that would have kept them busy for the rest of the year. Those plans, obviously, changed. But instead of retreating after Pearl Jam’s short-circuited year, Cameron went back to work on his own material. First, he got cracking on his second solo album; then he dusted off another project that had been in the works for a few years. While recording Gigaton, Cameron had bounced a few loose ideas off of his pals, including Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and the Melvins’ Buzz Osborne and Steven McDonald. When Hawkins threw some vocals on a few cuts and made some other suggestion...
Buzz Osborne has unleashed the final preview of his upcoming second album, Gift of Sacrifice. The pioneering Melvins frontman, recording under the name King Buzzo, released the experimental “Delayed Clarity” on Wednesday. The sinister track, which follows album cuts “I’m Glad I Could Help Out” and “Science In Modern America,” unfolds with strummed acoustic guitars, brooding vocals, and scraping strings. Gift of Sacrifice, featuring Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn, is out August 14 via Ipecac Recordings. The album was originally set for a May release but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The record follows King Buzzo’s solo debut, 2014’s This Machine Kills Artists. Between those two LPs, Osborne recorded a series of albums with Melvins:...
Members of the Melvins and Mudhoney have joined forces for a new EP titled White Lazy Boy. On the four-song collection, which was released last week via Amphetamine Reptile Records, you can hear Mudhoney’s Mark Arm and Steve Turner jam with Buzzo, Dale Cromer and bassist Steve McDonald. Great news, right? Not so fast. The EP was issued on CD (remember those?) and, it’s completely sold out. Thankfully, due to the joys of the internet, the covers of Black Flag’s “My War” and Neil Young’s “Drive Back” are online. But what the Seattle legends do is rip, and they certainly let it fly on these tracks. White Lazy Boy is out now — if you can get your hands on it. Listen to the songs below.
