Did someone ask for a hip-hop stage adaptation of The Matrix? Of course not, but Danny Boyle is giving us one anyway. As Variety reports, Boyle will turn the 1999 sci-fi smash into a “large-scale immersive performance” titled Free Your Mind. Its logline reads as follows: “Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design, Free Your Mind will take audiences on a thrilling journey through The Matrix and into a new realm of possibilities.” Licensed by Warner Bros. Theater Ventures, Free Your Mind is also scheduled to be the inaugural performance at Factory International, a new arts venue in Manchester, UK, in October 2023: “This eye-opening production will stretch across the building’s ultra-flexible spaces, responding to them and h...
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections, specifically the ending.] The Matrix Resurrections is a movie that’s distinctly aware of what came before, not only including actual footage from all three of the prior films, but offering up direct homages to the most iconic moments. And that’s especially found in the music choice made for the final sequence, which encapsulates the fourth film’s relationship to the original — a direct callback that also represents the new normal presented by director Lana Wachowski. If you need a reminder of how the original Matrix ends, it’s a relatively simple coda: With the wild action of Neo’s (Keanu Reeves) battle with Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) now over, Neo places a polite phone call to the A.I. monitoring the Matrix in w...
Carrie-Anne Moss arrived at The Matrix: Resurrections premiere in California and assumed the role of best dressed on the red carpet with ease. Known forever in our hearts as her character Trinity, Moss wore an Oscar de la Renta couture gown to debut the fourth instalment of The Matrix film series. Moss’s dress had us immediately mesmerised. The black gown featured Hellenistic-inspired draping, ruching, and caped sleeves. With a plunging neckline and a cinched waist, the custom dress boasted silver and green sequin embroidery that started at the hemline and moved upwards, as inspired by the movie’s signature Matrix code. Within the code itself, and if you’re able to zoom in close enough, you’ll find that that the name of the maison “Oscar de la Renta” is ...
Our 2021 Annual Report continues with a deep dive into how COVID-19 has changed “event” movies. As December rolls along, stay tuned for more awards, lists, and articles about the best music, film, and TV of 2021. You can find it all in one place here. Spider-Man: No Way Home, which hit theaters in the US on December 16th, is poised to shatter box office records. One of the most anticipated blockbuster films of 2021 (maybe even of the last five years), all eyes are on Peter Parker and Co. to rake in the kind of cash that superheroes typically did in the Before Times. Of course, the film is about to smash said records in a very different world than when pre-production on it began in 2017. The COVID-19 pandemic has done astronomical damage to countless businesses, and the movie industry was n...
As tickets for the theatrical release of The Matrix Resurrections go on sale, a final full-length trailer for the blockbuster sequel has been released. While we don’t much deeper into what is sure to be the complicated plot of the fourth Matrix film, the new preview does provide a look at even more of the movie’s gorgeous action. We get to see numerous close-quarter fight scenes, gun fights, and explosions, all while getting teases of the mysterious story surrounding Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). Whatever is going on here, it seems like Neo and Trinity are (to make a parallel to a completely different franchise) the Keymaster and Gatekeeper of the scenario. Neo begins to regain his memory as he encounters familiar moments like déjà vu: red and blue pills, whi...
Anticipating movies these days is a fool’s errand. Unless it’s guaranteed to be hitting a streaming platform, the release date of any film should have an asterisk appended to it. That’s not cynical, but the nature of covering this industry amidst the pandemic. So, you could imagine how fun this list was to put together. (Spoiler: It wasn’t.) Dragging over last year’s offerings to this one seems like an easy task, but the shift opens the door for so many questions, all of which boil down to: “What are the odds?” For many features — you know, like Ghostbusters: Afterlife, or No Time to Die, or Halloween Kills, or any film without a streaming opt-in — the release date is as certain as we are about anything right now in life. “We’ll see” is the name of the game. Having said that, a few studios...
When the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, The Office officially switched over from Netflix to Peacock, NBC’s new streaming platform. That transition may have come as a shock to some fans, but it also comes with plenty of welcome surprises. Case and point: NBC has shared a previously unreleased cold open from The Office’s finale that sees Dwight falling for a ridiculous prank. In the clip, which lasts nearly five minutes, Jim and Pam join forces to trick Dwight into thinking he’s living in the real-world version of The Matrix. He witnesses the same cat run by twice, his computer spontaneously produces a prompt with that iconic green font, and two mysterious men in sunglasses appear in the Dunder Mifflin office. Unsurprisingly, Dwight geeks out and runs away as ordered — and str...

As the pandemic continues to cripple the film industry, Warner Bros. has once again been forced to reconfigure its upcoming release state. Notably, The Batman has been pushed all the way to 2022.
