Bruce Springsteen and Jake Clemons Perform Three Songs With the Killers

The Killers‘ North American leg of their Imploding the Mirage tour has been eventful. Opener Johnny Marr has performed Smiths songs with the band, including several with his former Smiths bandmate Andy Rourke on Friday night at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. How did they top that? By calling over a friend from across the river. Ahead of Saturday night’s encore, the Killers singer Brandon Flowers said to the crowd that “everybody gets a little nervous when their boss shows up for work, right?” Flowers isn’t wrong, and he surprised the MSG audience with what he said next. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but me and my friends have been sweating bullets up here all night because the Boss is here. Ladies and gentlemen, Bruce Springsteen.” And voila, Springsteen and E Street Band saxoph...

Lindsey Buckingham, Johnny Marr Join The Killers in Los Angeles

The Killers‘ current North American tour has found the band frequently performing with their opening act, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and last night (Aug. 27) at Los Angeles’ Banc of California Stadium, they were joined by another legendary rocker. On-again/off-again Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham took the stage during the encore to guest on “Caution” from The Killers’ 2020 album Imploding The Mirage and stuck around for a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s classic “Go Your Own Way.” Buckingham and Marr then both joined The Killers for a show-closing “Mr. Brightside.” Earlier in the set, Marr lent a hand on a cover of The Smiths’ “This Charming Man”; the musicians have previously performed the latter band’s “Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and “There Is a Light T...

Johnny Marr Joins The Killers to Cover Classic Smiths Songs

The Killers have started off the North American leg of their current tour with a little help from opening act Johnny Marr. At the opening gig Friday (Aug. 19) in Vancouver, Marr joined the band during its set for covers of The Smiths’ “Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.” The next night, Marr returned to help The Killers perform the latter song and The Smiths’ “What She Said,” and stuck around to lend a hand on the show-closing “Mr. Brightside.” Marr previously played The Smiths’ “This Charming Man” with The Killers at the U.K.’s Glastonbury Festival in 2019. The Killers Unveil New Single ‘boy’ Ahead of Massive Tour

The Killers have released a new synth-powered single, “boy,” which was written during sessions for the 2021 album Pressure Machine but didn’t fit the vibe of that project. “boy” was debuted at the Mad Cool festival in Madrid on July 7 and was also performed nine days later in Amsterdam. “This was the first song written after we had to cancel the Imploding The Mirage tour due to the pandemic,” Killers frontman Brandon Flowers says. “I had recently moved back to Utah and started to make trips to Nephi, where I grew up. I found that the place I had wanted to get away from so desperately at 16 was now a place that I couldn’t stop returning to. I have a son approaching the age I was at that time in my life. With ‘boy,’ I want to reach out and tell myself — and my sons — to not overthink it. And...

The Killers’ Pressure Machine Is a Chilling Small-Town Portrait

Pressure Machine, The Killers’ audacious new concept album, is so foreboding and grim — how foreboding and grim is it? — that Brandon Flowers may soon receive a cease-and-desist letter from Utah’s department of tourism. The band’s seventh studio LP (and second in 12 months) is a jarring departure from the maximalized arena-rock of 2020’s Imploding The Mirage, instead painting a grayscale portrait of small-town survival, specifically hinging on Flowers’ adolescent home of Nephi, Utah.  It’s part country-rock retrospective, part Coen Brothers thriller and part This American Life, as The Killers commissioned an audio engineer — from NPR no less! — to record real-life residents of the northwestern valley town speaking candidly about their melan-bucolic lives.  And these narratives, w...

The Killers Announce New Album Pressure Machine

Well, that was fast. Almost a year to the day after releasing their sixth studio album, Imploding the Mirage, The Killers announced that their seventh LP is on the way. Brandon Flowers and company will be releasing the collection, Pressure Machine, on Aug. 13 via Island Records. The album, which has been teased for a bit and in the works for a while, was produced by Shawn Everett and Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado. “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence.  And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records,” Flowers said in a statement. The album’s concept is billed as a contemplative character study and takes place in Nephi, Utah — a loo...

Bruce Springsteen and the Killers Unveil ‘Dustland’ Collaboration

If you’ve ever thought that the Killers, despite the glitz and glam of their sound, owe a thing or two to Bruce Springsteen, you’re not incorrect. In fact, it’s something we noted on our review of Imploding the Mirage last August. But, joining forces? That seemed unlikely, however, that is (after a week of teasing) exactly what happened. Springsteen and the Killers unveiled “Dustland,” a new song released together. The song is a reworking of “A Dustland Fairytale” from the Killers’ 2008 album Day & Age, and is one that the Boss has said is his favorite from the band. You don’t need me to describe the sound of the song, you can a) use your imagination or b) listen below (which if you’re reading this, are probably going to do anyway). If you’re wondering how it all went down, let Brandon...

Bruce Springsteen Says That He’s Joining The Killers on an Upcoming Collaboration

Bruce Springsteen said that he’ll be joining The Killers an upcoming song that should be arriving “in a week or so,” or at least that’s what Springsteen said during a DJ set on SiriusXM’s E Street Radio aka his own station. Prior to the confirmation, The Killers had fun teasing their fans with whatever mystery partnership might be in the works. “We’re announcing a killer collab (pun intended) later this week, but you’ve got to figure out who it’s with,” they wrote on their social media accounts yesterday (June 10). We’re announcing a killer collab (pun intended) later this week, but you’ve got to figure out who it’s with. Be on the lookout for clues in coming posts. Dave Keuning on New Solo LP, Moving Forward With the Killers

Like many artists in the smartphone era, Dave Keuning has “hundreds” of guitar riffs and musical fragments stockpiled in his voice memos. Some of these inevitably wither in digital purgatory. Some wind up on his solo LPs, including his upcoming second project, A Mild Case of Everything. Others are cherry-picked and presented to his bandmates in the Killers — a process that’s often trickier than fans may think. “I’ve shown quite a few things, and sometimes they just don’t stick,” he tells SPIN from San Diego, where he’s spent much of the pandemic “fishing around for ideas” at his home studio. “Being in a band can be awkward. I can’t make other people like my stuff. I’m way past the point of fighting about it. If they don’t like something, I’ll just try something else and save it for a rainy...

Trent Reznor, Dua Lipa and The Killers Dig Deep in Song Exploder Season Two Trailer

The second season Song Exploder, the Netflix series based on the podcast of the same name, premieres globally on Dec. 15 and just dropped its first trailer. In it, one of the most powerful moments is when Trent Reznor is seen listening to the classic Nine Nails song “Hurt” and reflecting, “I felt alone. That’s me not knowing who I am anymore: I think I said ‘I’m sorry.’ Then it exploded unexpectedly.” In addition to Nine Inch Nails, the series features The Killers, Dua Lipa and Natalia Lafourcade. The lineup was initially announced in October. A deep dive into the “deeply personal” Killers hit “When You Were Young” reveals that “those first three chords awakened us,” while Lafourcade shares that to get beyond a block for “Hasta La Raíz” where “the music did fe...

The Killers Perform ‘Mr Brightside’ on Monday Night Football

On Monday night, the Las Vegas Raiders (it feels as weird to type as it does to look at) played their first home at Allegiant Stadium across the 15 highway from the Strip. The team was tied at halftime, but they did get a warm welcome from a Vegas institution: the Killers. In a pretaped performance, the group played on a makeshift stage on high above the Strip. “It’s our pleasure to welcome the Raiders to fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada” Brandon Flowers said. “I think we have just the song for the occasion.” The band then plowed through a version of “Mr. Brightside.” Earlier this year, the Killers released their latest studio album, Imploding the Mirage. You can read our review of it here. Are The Rolling Stones dipping their toes in electronic music? The fabled rock group recently took to social media to announce a forthcoming collaboration with The Killers and Jacques Lu Cont, teasing a new version of their single “Scarlet.” Jacques Lu Cont is the electronic music alias of Stuart Price, a prolific 3-time Grammy Award-winning record producer who has worked with Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Seal, and many more of contemporary music’s corps d’elite. He is a highly coveted remixer, with official reworks of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” and “The Man” in addition to recent renditions of Halsey‘s “Be Kind” and SOFI TUKKER and Gorgon City‘s “House Arrest.” Price was even as...
