A love letter to the late Queen, but not in the way you expect. The Crown Season 6 Concludes as a Study in Empathy: Review Liz Shannon Miller
The stars of “The Crown” season 5 were out in force at the world premiere in London on 8 Nov. In celebration of the latest series, released on Netflix on 9 Nov., Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki oozed class in a stunning black Dior gown ahead of her debut as Princess Diana, as she takes over from Emma Corrin, who played the “people’s princess” in season 4. The chic black strapless dress, from Dior’s spring/summer 22 couture collection, was designed with cutout sections around the ribs and pleats around the chest. With added material around the neck to form a choker, the flowing fabric draped onto the floor, falling over the racerback design. Debicki’s gown felt like a modern iteration of Princess Diana‘s infamous “revenge dress”...
The Pitch: In Season 5 of The Crown, one unifying theme stands out — being royalty is not a good time. The stately Netflix drama’s penultimate run of episodes has now clearly reached the beginning of the end, as Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton, succeeding Olivia Colman) faces her age, Prince Charles (Dominic West, succeeding Josh O’Connor) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki, succeeding Emma Corrin) face their infamous divorce, and Prince Philip (Jonathan Pryce, succeeding Tobias Menzies) faces… getting really into carriage racing. As grey and somber as ever, the fifth season continues the show’s march towards the one seismic event that will shake Britain to its core. But it takes its time, while continuing to explore both the symbolic power of the royal family — as well as the diffi...
The 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Now in its 73rd year, the annual ceremony honored the best in US primetime television. Cedric the Entertainer, one of the Original Kings of Comedy, served as the evening’s host. Unlike last year’s awkward digital presentation, this year’s Emmy Awards took place live and in person. All attendees were required not only to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19, but also a negative COVID test received within two days of the event. Among the night’s big winners was Ted Lasso, which claimed the prize for Outstanding Comedy Series. What’s more, Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis, was honored with the trophy for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, while Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingh...

One month after its October 23rd debut on Netflix, Scott Frank and Allan Scott’s adaptation of Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel became the most-watched scripted miniseries in Netflix history. Not surprisingly, interest in chess skyrocketed with “How to play chess” peaking in Google searches and chess boards being wrapped everywhere throughout this holiday season. At the center of it all, ...
When flipping through the coolest photos of Princess Diana, there’s always one thing that runs through my mind — imagine if a royal were to wear bike shorts today? The scandal! Even more than her inimitable fashion sense was her rebellious spirit, which is why I am more than okay with Diana’s ’90s style shaping our wardrobes once again. Around the time of Diana’s divorce from Prince Charles between 1991 and 1996, the Princess of Wales began wearing very short and slinky dresses to public engagements. When off-duty, she would wear surprisingly casual — and American — pieces like cowboy boots, baseball caps, and bike shorts. The “revenge dress” was perhaps the princess’s most iconic fashion moment, when she turned up to a 1994 Serpentine summer party...
It’s exciting to watch The Crown‘s Emma Corrin become an overnight success of an actor. Having also appeared as a supporting role in Misbehaviour alongside Keira Knightley and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, playing a young Princess Diana is certainly the role of a lifetime. And while her onscreen style as the people’s princess is captivating, her offscreen style is equally impressive. Corrin is an ambassador for Miu Miu, which explains why she’s often seen wearing Prada’s girlish but sophisticated sister brand – like the custom blue check-print, Diana-inspired outfit she wore to The Crown‘s season 4 virtual premiere. When not in semicharacter, her style is pretty consistent. Corrin loves a classic black maxi dress for a red carpet event, whether that be a sexy, ...
The Pitch: November 15th marks the return of Peter Morgan’s opulent biopic about British royalty and its current sovereign, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman). The new season picks up with the IRA assassination of Lord Mountbatten (Charles Dance) and spans Margaret Thatcher’s (Gillian Anderson) 11-year tenure as Prime Minister. Season 4 also prominently features the long-awaited appearance of Diana, Princess of Wales (Emma Corrin), and explores the majority of her troubled marriage to Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), having finally reached an era that many of us remember from personal experience, rather than history books or documentaries But this season does not rest on its exciting historical events, shaping the narrative to present its most pointed examination of the monarchy as an institut...
Netflix is bringing the royalty in November 2020. The highly anticipated fourth season of The Crown premieres mid-month to much hype. Oscar winner Olivia Colman returns as Queen Elizabeth, only this time she’ll duke it out with Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. That’s not all! America’s own queen Dolly Parton is bringing her holiday special Christmas on the Square to the streaming giant on November 22nd. So, expect to spend Thanksgiving down in Tennessee for a little country get-together. Elsewhere, there’s the hilarious new sketch comedy series Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun, Shawn Mendes’ world tour documentary, Ron Howard’s star-studded Hillbilly Elegy, and, yes, Kurt Russell’s return in The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two.
