Miley Cyrus Covers the Beatles ‘Help!’ for Global Goal Livestream

Miley Cyrus’s song choice was an apt one for the Global Goal: Unite for Our Future livestream on Saturday. The pop star put her own twangy twist on the Beatles’ 1965 classic “Help!” to an empty Spieker Field at the Rose Bowl during the virtual concert, which was organized to help communities disproportionately affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Aside from the performance, Cyrus also discussed how her generation is helping incite change. “My generation is hungry for change and is leading that charge in many ways,” the singer told Global Citizen. “I’ve just been a student, over the last few months and especially over the few weeks in my home country. I’ve been a student of these organizers and being able to learn and educate myself. That’s kind of what my time is fille...

Paul McCartney Calls for Meat to Be Optional in England School Meals

You’d think that people would have had enough of silly school meals? After asking fans to “ditch meat” for his birthday last week, Paul McCartney is speaking up again. The former Beatle, along with daughters Stella and Mary, signed a letter urging England’s Education Secretary Gavin Williamson to no longer make meat mandatory in England’s school meals. The letter was part of the “consultation process” for the National Food Strategy, a landmark review of Britain’s food system, according to the Guardian. “No one needs to eat meat, so it shouldn’t be mandatory to serve it in schools,” the McCartneys said in a statement. “It’s time to revise the School Food Standards to help the planet, spare animals, and promote healthy eating.” As of now, the current school food plan ...

Ringo Starr Sends ‘Peace Love & Continuous Support’ to Those Protesting Racial Injustice

The day after Paul McCartney shared a poignant statement about the protests stemming from George Floyd’s murder, Ringo Starr added his own thoughts to his Beatles bandmate’s message. “As my brother Paul said The Beatles always stood for equal rights&justice and I’ve never stopped working for peace&love ever since,” he tweeted, sharing McCartney’s statement. “#blacklivesmatter,#peaceispossible-I send my peace love&continuous support to everyone marching & speaking up for justice & a better world” As my brother Paul said The Beatles always stood for equal rights&justice and I’ve never stopped working for peace&love ever since. #blacklivesmatter,#peaceispossible-I send my peace love&continuous support to everyone marching & speaking up for justice...

Ben Gibbard Performs All-Beatles Set in Latest Livestream

Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard has been offering generous livestreams to fans for a couple months now; he was one of the first to hit the ground running with this sort of thing when quarantine began. So far we’ve seen him take on his own extensive catalog, Nirvana, Bob Dylan and other greats. Tonight (May 7), he came full circle to some degree by doing a whole set of the Beatles, whose Magical Mystery Tour flick is where Death Cab got their name. Gibbard noted during the livestream that one time he shared a flight with Paul McCartney (and Keane) and had a flight attendant pass Macca a note thanking him for the band name. Other things we learn: “I’m Looking Through You” was the “hardest to sing,” John would be the Beatle “most annoying to hang out with,” Revolver is Gibbard’s favori...
