Germany starts coronavirus vaccines a day early

A 101-year-old woman in an elderly care home became the first person in Germany to be inoculated against coronavirus on Saturday, a day before the official vaccination campaign was scheduled to get under way in both Germany and the EU. Edith Kwoizalla was one of around 40 residents and 10 staff in a care home in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt to receive a jab of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, the home’s manager Tobias Krueger told AFP. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine became the first to get the go-ahead for use in the West, when Britain gave its approval on December 2. As other nations from the United States to Saudi Arabia to Singapore followed suit, Germany impatiently prodded the EU’s drugs regulator, the European Medicines Agency, to bring forward its decision from December 29. The EMA f...

Christmas celebrated under pandemic’s shadow

Hundreds of millions across the world celebrated pared-down Christmas festivities on Friday due to coronavirus restrictions, as Pope Francis called for vaccines for everyone, describing them as “glimmers of hope in this period of darkness and uncertainty”. The pandemic has claimed more than 1.7 million lives and is still running rampant in much of the world, but the recent launching of mass vaccine campaigns has boosted hopes that 2021 could bring a respite. Like so many across the globe, the pope was forced to break with normal Christmas tradition, holding his annual “Urbi et Orbi” speech by video from the apostolic palace, to prevent a crowd from gathering in St Peter’s Square. “I call on everyone, on leaders of states, on businesses, on international organisations, to promote cooperatio...

Paul McCartney Again Questions Whether The Beatles Would’ve Reunited If John Lennon Had Lived

This isn’t the first time McCartney has discussed whether The Beatles would’ve performed together again after splitting in 1969. In 2012, the legendary songwriter told Rolling Stone that “there was talk of re-forming The Beatles a couple of times but “it didn’t jell, there was not enough passion behind the idea.” Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in 1980, followed by George Harrison‘s death from cancer in 2001. Ringo Starr and McCartney are the only surviving members of The Beatles. During his CBS Sunday Morning interview, McCartney also discussed self-recording his new solo album, McCartney III, in isolation at his Sussex studio earlier this year. “It’s not like working with the band, because I know what I want to hear, and I d...

California hospitals overrun even as vaccine is rolled out

Even as high profile figures like U.S. Vice President Mike Pence rolled up their sleeves for COVID-19 vaccinations, patients already ill with the disease crowded emergency rooms and overran intensive care units in California, now a worldwide epicenter. Another 41,000 people tested positive in the most populous U.S. state on Thursday, and 300 died, state public health officials said. In a state with 40 million residents, only about 1,200 intensive care beds remained available by Friday – just 2.1% of the total, the California Department of Public Health said. “We anticipated a surge, but I’m not sure if anyone imagined it would be as bad as it has been,” said Adam Blackstone, a spokesman for the Hospital Association of Southern California. Hospitals are strained under the press of patients,...

As ‘Masked Singer’ Winner, Sun Hopes to Shine ‘Light Into This World in This Dark Time’

The clue packages for Sun hinted at a performer who started early, along with lots of references to the color blue and Disney. But it was her peerless voice that really made fans think that the woman behind the mask might be a legendary country star whose unmistakable sound has been in our ears for more than 25 years. And after guesses ranging from Madonna to Idina Menzel and Gwyneth Paltrow, when the solar dust settled, it turned out that the odds-on favorite to win this season was none other than “How Do I Live” singer LeAnn Rimes. The child star, who first rose to national attention at age 8 after appearing on Star Search and broke through at 13 with her multiplatinum debut Blue, was an unstoppable force on the show, and with a win under her belt, she’s ...

Crocodile Was ‘Blown Away That I Even Made It Top Three’ on ‘Masked Singer’

The 40-year-old veteran performer whose new solo single, “80’s Movie,” is due out this Friday, hopped on the phone with Billboard before his elimination to talk about why his pink Croc costume was a dead-on emotional choice and how he thinks his Britney cover was the perfect complement to BSB’s recently released collab with their former Jive Records labelmate on “Matches.” Crocodiles have a thick skin, and in the clue packages you alluded to the fact that you’ve had to grow one as a child star coming up in the biz. Why did you choose him and why was he so pink? People who know me, my friends and family and children, know that I’m extremely sensitive and I’m just a lover, and the color pink just popped up for me from the performance side ...

Rainn Wilson Joking That He Doesn’t Know Who Taylor Swift Is Has Us Revisiting Her ‘Office’ Parody

Well, nine years ago, the singer-songwriter came up with her own parody of the hit NBC sitcom for a behind-the-scenes clip of her “Ours” music video. The mockumentary-style spoof featured similarly miserable employees in a sterile office reminiscent of Dunder Mifflin, who occupied themselves with gossip about Swift’s lovesick, cat video-watching character. “The sweater crow? Part scarecrow, part sweater, all blonde. Her?” one character commented. “I can’t remember her real name. But she uses a lot of company time to do inappropriate things on the internet.” Since her Speak Now days and somehow between releasing not one, but two surprise albums during quarantine, the Evermore singer recently told Swifties that she̵...

Watch Gwen Stefani & Carter Rubin ‘Make It Feel Like Christmas’ With Their Duet on ‘Voice’ Finale

Gwen Stefani and her 15-year-old mentee on The Voice Carter Rubin performed a seasonal duet of “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” for the season 19 finale Tuesday night (Dec. 15). Stefani’s ornate Christmas tree-like dress complemented Rubin’s velvet green tuxedo for their performance on stage, which transformed into an elf workshop. Her fiancé and fellow coach Blake Shelton‘s heart likely skipped as Stefani serenaded him with the verse, “I never thought I’d find a love like this/ But I found forever in that very first kiss/ I wanna thank you, baby/ You make it feel like Christmas.” “How big are the shoes, ’cause I’ve heard he’s really tall,” Rubin teased Shelton earlier about filling in his shoes f...

Kelly Clarkson’s 10 Best ‘Kellyoke’ Covers of 2020

Our lives in 2020 would especially suck without Kelly Clarkson‘s covers of every hit known to man. Whether it’s pop, rock or country, she never fails to bring the house down with her “Kellyoke” covers to kick off The Kelly Clarkson Show. But this year, the double doors with theater marquee lights didn’t reveal the Grammy-winning singer’s grand entrance to the studio, where in-house audience members clapped, cheered, danced and sang along with her. Instead, vertical screen panels replaced physical seats but doubled as performance decor. And she had more room to turn her show into a full-on movie set for a Halloween-themed special. ‘Kelly Clarkson Show’ Renewed Through 2023

Clarkson’s show debuted in fall 2019 and became the most watched new daytime talk show in seven years. The current season — which returned to studio production after filming remotely in the spring and summer — is putting up solid ratings as well, averaging 1.31 million daily viewers and ranking in the top five syndicated talkers. “The Kelly Clarkson Show is one of the most optimistic success stories in first-run syndication,” said Valari Staab, president NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations. “Kelly is a beloved performer and host with deep roots at NBC, and we are delighted to have her continue to be a very important and treasured part of our stations’ programming.” The show won three Daytime Emmys in 2020, including one for Clarkson as bes...
