MTN SA Announces 2 New Executive Appointments

MTN SA today announced a review of its executive structure as the company gears up to deliver on its Ambition 2025 strategy to transform from a Telco to a TechCo. In line with this strategic shift, the company has appointed Ernst Fonternel into the role of Chief Consumer Officer and Divyesh Joshi into the role of Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer. Both appointments were recruited internally and are effective 1 October.   The new executive structure also sees the introduction of two new roles including that of Chief Commercial Operations Officer and Chief Risk Officer. This is according to a statement issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), where it is detailed that Orange sent a six-person team from its Middle East and Africa division led by non-executive Victoria Adefala to scout the Nigerian market for expansion opportunities. Airtel Africa Coughs Up $40-Million for New Kenyan Spectrum

Sourced from Comms MEA Airtel Africa, one of the continent’s largest telecommunications groups with a presence in 14 countries, today announces that its Kenya subsidiary, Airtel Kenya, has concluded its purchase of additional spectrum in the country. According to the announcement Airtel Kenya has purchased 60 MHz of additional spectrum in the 2600 MHz band from the Communications Authority of Kenya, for a gross consideration of $40-million. Instead, Airtel Money will now be operating under the name ‘Airtel Money Kenya Limited’. “Following this business separation, Airtel Money Kenya Limited will take over and continue the provision of the Airtel Money Services, in collaboration with the licensed telecommunications network of Airtel Networks Kenya Limited,” reads the announcement from Airtel. South African telecommunications group Vodacom said on Thursday that it is seeking to invest R1-billion, or around $58.2-million, into improving its mobile network in the country’s eastern coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Ethiopia Changing Laws to Prepare for M-PESA Launch

The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has drafted a bill that will allow foreign investors to launch and operate mobile money services in the country, making way for companies like Safaricom, which is planning to begin operations in Ethiopia within the year.
