LinkedIn: Are There Cyber-Risks Lurking Beneath the Surface?

In February 2021, the data from 500 million LinkedIn users was leaked by hackers, in June 2021, more than 700 million LinkedIn users had their data leaked and put up for sale. In June 2022, the FBI said that the fraud on LinkedIn posed a significant threat to the platform and its users. The site has become one of the riskiest social media platforms to date, according to South Africa-based cybersecurity firm Nclose. It allows for users to reveal deeply personal and relevant business information without authorisation; it allows for fraudsters to impersonate employees, and gain trust and access to information which can potentially put a company’s reputation on the line if an employee posts libellous or unpleasant content. “By now, most people recognise that social media isn’t the place to put...

The entire course can be completed online. According to the recent global Kaspersky survey conducted among senior non-IT management and business owners, 73% of firms can’t handle a ransomware attack alone or with the help of regular IT service providers. Over recent years the lack of skilled technical staff who can detect and respond to complex incidents, along with a lack of visibilit...

Crypto Scams on the Rise in SA: Here’s How to Protect Yourself

Image sourced from Shutterstock. The world seems to have gone ‘crypto-mad’. Digital currencies like bitcoin, Monero, Ethereum, and even Dogecoin, are all over the internet. Their soaring value promises big wins for investors (if you’re “buying the dip”, that is). And the ‘fortunes’ to be made by mining for virtual money have echoes of gold rushes that formed the first mining towns in South Africa back in the 1800s. Or at least, that’s what many, including a long list of scammers, will have you believe. In reality, if you’re interested in cryptocurrency today, you’re quite possibly at a major risk for fraud. In many respects, in this new unregulated world, bad actors often have the upper hand. In 2021, South African-based Africrypt was reportedly hacked, effectively wiping out a staggering ...
