Lyrics to the Foo Fighters’ opening aural salvo summed up a historic night and extraordinary experience: “It’s times like these you learn to live again.” The setting was Madison Square Garden, the occasion? NYC’s first full capacity arena concert since COVID-19 lockdowns began in March 2020. There was audience speculation about New York-centric guests along the lines of a Billy Joel, and murmurs of why an artist with area ties like KISS or Bruce Springsteen didn’t reopen the World’s Most Famous Arena. That said, it was immediately clear that the Foo Fighters were the perfect choice for New Yorkers to celebrate the city’s reopening with a much-welcomed infusion of communal energy, camaraderie and joy. The group’s consummately crafted arena rock stylings are classic – and now 26 years since ...
After having their grand plans to celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band shelved due to COVID, Foo Fighters are finally ready to hit the road. The group had been teasing activity throughout the holiday weekend, and now we know why. In honor of what’s now their 26th anniversary, the Foos announced a handful of tour dates that begin in July and will span a few weeks in the middle of the country. “Having confirmed their appearances atop the 2021 lineups of Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Bottlerock, Foo Fighters are answering the burning question of “Are they doing any of their own shows?” with a resounding FUCK YES,” a statement says a bit more succinctly. Radkey will support the band on this run, with more dates promised to be announced in the near future. If you’re a Citi cardholder, you ca...
Matt Cameron expected to be on the road with Pearl Jam for most of 2020. In March, the band released Gigaton, their first new album in seven years, and they planned several U.S. legs and a European run that would have kept them busy for the rest of the year. Those plans, obviously, changed. But instead of retreating after Pearl Jam’s short-circuited year, Cameron went back to work on his own material. First, he got cracking on his second solo album; then he dusted off another project that had been in the works for a few years. While recording Gigaton, Cameron had bounced a few loose ideas off of his pals, including Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and the Melvins’ Buzz Osborne and Steven McDonald. When Hawkins threw some vocals on a few cuts and made some other suggestion...
The Foo Fighters took a little break from promoting their upcoming record, Medicine at Midnight, to share Times Like Those, a new short film created in honor of the group’s 25th anniversary. The special video shows Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear and Rami Jaffee sitting in comfy La-Z-Boy chairs and snacking on popcorn as they look and comment on throwback photos and clips taken over the course of their 25-year career. From the show that had to end because of a lightning storm to the behind-the-scenes footage of how 1999’s There Is Nothing Left to Lose album art was created, they reminisce about their high moments, hungover rides to the next gig and questionable style choices. The film features photos by Danny Clinch, Ross Halfin, Lisa Johnson,...
Alanis Morissette and Taylor Hawkins paid tribute to a few musical legends and reminisced on their pasts during the latest episode of Apple Music Hits’ Alanis Radio. The longtime Foo Fighters drummer actually performed with Morissette on the Jagged Little Pill tour, joined her as the radio show’s inaugural guest on Monday. Throughout the show, the pair showed off their musical IQ as they discussed both Eddie Van Halen and Chris Cornell, among others. “We were just having our discussion about our youthful dreams about back in the day, but even before we actually got paid to do it,” Hawkins said as he introduced the episode’s first song. “...
