Back in August, Gorillaz released their single “New Gold” alongside Tame Impala and Bootie Brown. The second single off their forthcoming album, Cracker Island, the track offers a psychedelic twist on the iconic band’s classic indietronica sound. Now, house music superstar Dom Dolla has been selected for an official remix, which is out now. It’s rare for Gorillaz to recruit remixers—save for a 2020 remix by Robert Smith, the last time was over four years ago. The remix begins with atmospheric vocal chops, which layer over Parker’s hypnotic vocals for a blissful, floating effect. Brown’s unapologetic verses then enter the fray before a tense build, which culminates in an anthemic tech house drop. It’s a signature Dolla record and one that doubles as a car...
Kevin Parker has taken to Instagram to reflect on the 10th anniversary of Tame Impala‘s second album, Lonerism, which was originally released on Oct. 5, 2012. The group performed Lonerism in its entirety at a special one-off show on Saturday at the Desert Daze festival in Lake Perris, Calif. “Difficult to sum up what the album means to me at this point,” Parker wrote. “It was a pretty special time for me making the music. In a way it’s when I truly discovered myself as an artist. Coming off the back of Innerspeaker, I had this new sense of purpose … calling … whatever you want to call it. I had finally given myself permission to let music take over my being completely … to become totally immersed in my own world of recording music. So I had this new sense of creative freedom. I felt free t...
Tame Impala‘s 2018 performance at Desert Daze in Lake Perris, Calif., was cut short after three songs due to a rare rainstorm, but the Kevin Parker-led group was finally able to return to finish the job last night (Oct. 1) during its headlining set at the 2022 edition of the festival. Tame Impala played its 2012 sophomore album Lonerism in full at Desert Daze, which entailed presenting one song from it that had never been performed live before (“She Just Won’t Believe Me”), another not heard since weeks after its release (closer “Sun’s Coming Up,” its first airing since Dec. 2010) and two more that had been absent from set lists since 2015 and 2016, respectively (opener “Be Above It,” “Music To Walk Home By”). Parker repeatedly expressed his gratitude at being able to offer this special pe...
Gorillaz have always embraced the spirit of collaboration, and during their show in Los Angeles on Friday night (Sept. 23), Damon Albarn’s virtual band had a whole lot of special guests on hand. As Rolling Stone reports, Beck, Tame Impala, Schoolboy Q, Thundercat, Del the Funky Homosapien, De La Soul and Bootie Brown all joined Gorillaz at the KIA Forum in Los Angeles. Beck came out to perform “The Valley of the Pagans” from 2020’s Season One: Strange Timez and returned for the world premiere of “Possession Island,” from Gorillaz’ star-studded upcoming album Cracker Island. [embedded content][embedded content] Schoolboy Q guested on the first live performance of “Pac Man” from Song Machine and Thundercat assisted on “Cracker Island.” As he often does, The Pharcyde’s Bootie Brown helpe...
Beach House will replace Iggy Pop as the final night headliner at the upcoming Desert Daze festival near Lake Perris, Calif., after Pop’s French-based band was unable to enter the United States due to visa complications. The performance was to be Pop’s only one in North America this year. “I am disappointed to announce the cancellation of my appearance at the Desert Daze Festival,” says Pop. “Due to a confluence of world events, we have had unprecedented visa issues for my French band way beyond our control, and the band can’t enter the United States in time for the date. I am frustrated to let my U.S. fans down. I’ve left no stone unturned to be there with you on October 2nd, but now I can only plan to play this wonderful festival again in the future.” Pop’s next album was produced by And...
What can’t Kevin Parker do? The decorated record producer and Tame Impala frontman, whose band is currently on their “Slow Rush” tour, recently stopped in Spain for back-to-back performances at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival. But on Friday, June 3rd, he stopped by Nitsa Club for a rare solo DJ set. One of the oldest and most iconic clubs in Barcelona, Nitsa is almost 80 years old and had previously operated an amusement park on its grounds. After the room was converted to a club in 1993, it went on to host many of the most illustrious artists in electronic music history, like Aphex Twin, Carl Craig and SBTRKT. Parker took to Tame Impala’s Instagram account to share a carousel of videos from the night. Rocking out to classics like ABBA...
Desert Daze is back for its 10th edition — and it’s quite a lineup. Tame Impala will mark the 10th anniversary of its Lonerism by heading to the California desert to play the album in full. Iggy Pop is also playing what’s billed as his only North American show in 2022 at the festival. The punk legend is currently on tour in Europe. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will also be on hand and are gearing up to play an “Exclusive Southern California Set.” Other artists featured include Chicano Batman, The Marías, Sky Ferreira, BADBADNOTGOOD, JPEGMAFIA, Perfume Genius, Aldous Harding, and Men I Trust among many more. As usual, Desert Daze will feature a number of video artists and art installations including work by Tarik Barri, Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, and Slim Reaper. The festival ta...
As tipped here last week, Diana Ross and Tame Impala lead the star-studded list of contributors to the soundtrack for Minions: The Rise of Gru, and their collaboration, “Turn Up the Sunshine,” is out now, ahead of the album’s July 1 release via Decca. A clear homage to Ross’ ‘70s and ‘80s disco-driven pop hits, the track was co-written by Jack Antonoff, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, singer Sam Dew and Grammy-winning Swedish musician/producer Patrik Berger. It begins with what sound like the voices of young children repeating the titular phrase, with Ross intoning in staccato phrasing during the verses and then soaring into the chorus. Minions: The Rise of Gru features ‘70s covers from such artists as Phoebe Bridgers (The Carpenters’ “Goodbye to Love”), Thundercat (Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Li...
The wacky world of the little yellow Minions from the Despicable Me film franchise will be enhanced by the suitably eclectic soundtrack to the movie Minions: The Rise of Gru, which hits theaters July 1. The film is set in the 1970s and tells the origin story of super-villain Gru, so it’s only natural that the Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack, also due July 1 from Decca, comprises mostly covers of memorable songs from that era by such artists Phoebe Bridgers (The Carpenters’ “Goodbye to Love”), Thundercat (Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like an Eagle”), H.E.R (Sly and the Family Stone’s “Dance to the Music”) and St. Vincent (Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown”). One of the only newly written tunes is an eye-popping, danceable collaboration that will serve as the lead single: Diana Ross’ “Turn Up the Sunshi...
