Steve Aoki Joined Taking Back Sunday Onstage at When We Were Young Festival

A dance music superstar crashed the biggest emo party of the year. Over the weekend, emos and punks descended on the Las Vegas Festival Grounds for the inaugural When We Were Young Festival. The event featured performances from My Chemical Romance, Paramore, A Day to Remember, Avril Lavigne, Bring Me The Horizon and many more. The closest thing to EDM you’ll find at this event is a smattering of synthesizers, but a special surprise during Taking Back Sunday’s performance raised eyebrows. During their performance, Steve Aoki joined the band onstage. Over the summer, the prolific rock band and the Dim Mak boss blended their distinct styles to create the collaborative track “Just Us Two.” Looking to highlight some of their newer music at the festival powered by nostalg...

Artist x Artist: Steve Aoki and Taking Back Sunday in Conversation

On the list of collaborations that we certainly didn’t expect, Steve Aoki and Taking Back Sunday teamed up to release “Just Us Two” today. But the new track isn’t the only thing they did together. Aoki and all four current members of Taking Back Sunday (Adam Lazzara, John Nolan, Mark O’Connell and Shaun Cooper) sat down for an Artist x Artist conversation to discuss the new track and much more. The conversation covers a range of points including the production and recording of the song, the meaning behind it, and some of their unexpected shared experiences and connections from their decades in the music world. Check out the full video below. On our previous episode of Artist x Artist, the first ever Artist x Artist x Artist featured The Band Camino, flors, and Hastings. Together, they disc...

106 Musicians Predict the 2022 Baseball Season

The powers-that-be did their best to prevent this year’s Major League Baseball season from happening, but, alas, we’re back. By we, I mean the annual SPIN baseball preview. As usual, everyone (or almost everyone) is optimistic about their team’s chances in 2022. In 2021, a good chunk of the season was played with minimal fans in attendance, but things should be mostly back to normal this year. As I said last year about the season: Will it be weird? Probably. But aren’t they all? If it wasn’t a weird season with bizarre injuries, what kind of season would it be? Not baseball, Suzyn. Somehow, we almost doubled the number of participants from 62 to 105. Maybe we go for a cool 162 next year? If nothing else, we know that musicians love America’s Pastime (even if many feel that it doesn’t love ...

The 40 Best Emo Love Songs

While emo music might be most associated with sadness and heartbreak, those lovelorn artists couldn’t have written such songs without experiencing some serious romantic highs. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we wanted to focus on the good parts of love more than the bad — although there’s still some unhappiness and resentment mixed in. (I mean, it is still emo after all.) SPIN’s writers spanned decades, waves and numerous albums looking for the top emo love songs, and now we’ve gathered them all here to save you the work. And yes, we know “emo” is just as broad a term as “love song” — you may also describe some of these acts as pop-punk or post-hardcore or even heart-on-sleeve indie-rock. But all of these bangers branch off the same family tree. From trailblazers like The Get Up Kids...

Meet Fuckin Whatever: The Unlikely New Psych Supergroup With Members of Circa Survive, Taking Back Sunday and Grouplove

If the guys in Fuckin Whatever were to announce a tour together with each of their respective bands right now, it would probably be considered one of the top tours of the year — particularly if you’ve been into the whole emo and alternative scene for the last 20 years. Taking Back Sunday, Circa Survive, and Grouplove all on the same bill? Hell, you could even add in Saosin and maybe a special appearance by someone like Bad Books. For a band that contains John Nolan, Anthony Green, Adam Lazzara, and drummer Benjamin Homola, the possibilities are pretty much endless. But while the four friends were all on tour with their own bands for Taste of Chaos in 2016 (Homola was drumming for Dashboard Confessional at the time), they spent a lot of time goofing around in green rooms and parking lots. T...
