‘Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché’ Doc Explores Punk Trailblazer In All Her Contradictions
Born Marion Elliott to a white mother and Black father (he was Somali born) in what she described as a tough neighborhood, Styrene felt like an outsider from both the white and Black communities; some of the most revelatory parts of the documentary are Zoë Howe’s reading of poems (“Half-Caste,” “I Wanna Go Back to Africa”) that Styrene wrote about her racial identity. Considering the banshee warrior wail that characterized Styrene’s vocals, it’s unfortunately easy to miss the depth of her lyrics, but hearing her poems read aloud is a testament to the succinct strength of her pen. With no light at the end of the tunnel of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, South by Southwest is officially going digital in 2021. Organizers of the iconic Austin, Texas music festival and media conference took to social media to share the news of the upcoming virtual fest and its 2021 dates. They also announced that they are working closely with the City of Austin and public health authorities for the return of the physical event, refraining from divulging potential dates. SXSW 2021 Going Digital Due to the Ongoing Pandemic
Due to the ongoing health crisis, South by Southwest is going digital in 2021. Today, the Austin music, film, and interactive festival announced plans for SXSW Online, a self-proclaimed “digital experience” that’s set to go down from March 16th through the 20th. Like the festival’s in-person iteration, SXSW Online will feature conferences, keynotes, screenings, showcases, networking, and other exhibitions. According to a statement, the event’s Film and Conference portions will be constructed using an application process. Submissions open up on October 6th using SXSW’s PanelPicker platform. Next year’s SXSW Music segment seems like it will go down a little differently, however, serving as something of a make-up for the performers affected by the festival’s cancellation this past March....

The first domino to fall in the coronavirus shutdown was South-by-Southwest. The fest was canceled a few weeks ahead of its mid-March launch date and was a harbinger of things to come. For 2021, however, the festival is going online. The event will feature conference keynotes and sessions, screenings, showcases, networking, and exhibitions and will take place on March 16 – March 20, 2021. More interesting is that SXSW hasn’t ruled out an in-person event next year. In a release, the fest said that it “is working with the City of Austin and public health authorities on plans for a 2021 physical event” and it will provide more updates as they become available.
