Could Austin Be the Model for How to Save a Music Scene?

Austin’s success in the last decade as the so-called Live Music Capital of the World has come with a major drawback – the artists who call the city home have been the first ones priced out of the market. That paradigm might begin to change thanks to a non-profit group organized by Austin venue owners along the city’s famed Red River Street. On March 18, members of the National Independent Venue Association flocked to one of those venues for a special happy hour toasting their survival and return to Austin after a two-year closure. Their host for the day, Empire Control Room owner and NIVA cofounder Stephen Sternschein and longtime colleague Cody Cowan, executive director of the Red River Cultural District, were on hand catching up with friends and discussing recent improvements to the area...

Consequence’s 2022 SXSW Party at Brooklyn Bowl’s Family Reunion: Recap + Photo Gallery

It seems like we’ve been saying “live music is returning” for a year now. For a moment last summer, it felt like it was fully back before a fall variant threw everything out of whack again. There’s honestly no knowing whether another hold is on the horizon, but if there’s a sure sign concerts are back with a vengeance, it’s the return of South by Southwest. After being forced into a second virtual iteration last year, the long-running music conference and festival returned to Austin last week to once again bring together artists, fans, and industry figures for a celebration of all things live music. We at Consequence couldn’t have been more ecstatic to be part of the activities, reteaming with Brooklyn Bowl and Relix for the third “annual” Family Reunion at SXSW. Taking place on Friday, Ma...

Shooting Wounds 4 in Downtown Austin as City Hosts South by Southwest Festival

Four people were shot and wounded in downtown Austin, Texas, early Sunday (March 19) as the city hosts the annual South by Southwest festival, police said. According to the Austin Police Department, the shooting took place on the 400 block of 6th St. Officers told people to avoid the area at around 2:50 a.m., warning via Twitter that the gunman was still at large. However, police tweeted that a suspect was in custody shortly before 5 a.m. Police and the Austin-Travis County EMS said the victims’ injures were not life-threatening, and all four had been taken to the hospital. The coronavirus pandemic forced the SXSW festival to go virtual the last two years. In 2019, multiple shootings took place as the festival drew to a close, prompting Austin’s police chief to pledge more security for the...

How SXSW’s Only Ukrainian Act Fled Kyiv to Bring ‘Masters of War’ to Austin

To get to this moment — singing “Masters of War” at the Speakeasy in Austin, Texas, on Saturday (March 19) with Bob Dylan‘s guitarist while fans draped in Ukrainian flags roared from the balcony — Oleksandra Zaritska endured a terrible journey. On Feb. 25, the 29-year-old singer for popular regional trio Kazka was living in central Kyiv when Russia invaded her country. Early that morning, she witnessed the bombing from her balcony. SPIN at SXSW: The Lemonheads Reignite Austin With It’s a Shame About Ray Performance

Not gonna lie: we kinda missed SXSW, traffic, lines, free-flowing human chaos and all. SPIN hosted a number of raging day shows throughout the years, but for SXSW’s return, we had to come back with a real-deal official showcase at Stubb’s. And who could be more official than The Lemonheads? Evan Dando and company ripped through their classic 1992 album, It’s a Shame About Ray, as the party’s marquee feature, and even if at least half of the audience hadn’t been born by the time they initially broke up, Dando’s youthful warble still filled Stubb’s vast gravely lawn. One could probably hear Dando and the rest of us “Raaaaaay” from the Capitol less than a mile from the venue. Nearly three decades later, the one-two punch of “Bit Part” and “Allison’s Starting to Happen” still goes for the punk...
