It might comes as a surprise that 20 percent of the world’s cotton is produced by forced labour in Xinjiang, China — and this has to end. The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), an independent UK organisation that monitors ethical supply chains, started a call to action against human rights violations in China’s Uyghur region, and Marks & Spencer is one of the first major retailers to formally sign the petition. “The coalition is calling on leading brands and retailers to ensure that they are not supporting or benefiting from the pervasive and extensive forced labour of the Uyghur population and other Turkic and Muslim-majority peoples, perpetrated by the Chinese government,” said The Coalition to End Forced Labour in the Uyghur Region on its website. Burberry continues its commitment to sustainable practices and young creatives by launching ReBurberry Fabric in partnership with the British Fashion Council (BFC). The initiative plans to donate leftover Burberry fabrics to fashion students across the country who need a bit of extra help after a rough year. ReBurberry Fabric is a part of the BFC’s Positive Fashion and Colleges Council initiative, with help from fashion journalists Charlie Porter and Sarah Mower. Fabric donations will be facilitated by the BFC with plans to be made available to the remainder of the fashion industry — in an effort to inspire other brands and colleges to support future talent in sustainable ways. “One of the BFC’s priorities is to encourage the industry to move towards a circular fashion ec...
For fashion to truly be sustainable, we need a bit of a lifestyle change. Instead of replacing our once-loved pieces, let’s try shifting our mindset to upcycling clothes and accessories. It might sound difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. That’s why we spoke to three impressive young designers who are turning old trainers into chic corsets, tops, and bustiers. All Amin (Berlin, Germany), Graci Pepworth (Bristol, UK), and Cierra Boyd (Ohio, USA) might be from three different parts of the world, but they have a shared vision — living a more sustainable life through fashion and design. Each designer restores old and vintage trainers and transforms them into truly innovative designs. We asked these Gen-Z pioneers why they think that upcycling is essential to the sustainable ...
The Prince’s Foundation and Net-a-Porter partnered on an exciting sustainable fashion initiative, titled “The Modern Artisan”. The project and debut capsule collection, which is available to view this Thursday, 12 Nov., aims to train the next generation of artisans by giving textile students in the UK and Italy “the opportunity to produce a sustainable menswear and womenswear collection”, says Clarence House in a press statement. “Profits from the sale of the collection will be donated to The Prince’s Foundation to enable the charity to develop and deliver training programmes that will help preserve traditional textile skills.” The Modern Artisan’s debut ready-to-wear collection champions sustainable luxury fashion and is designed by st...

Image Courtesy: Desserto If you like the look of leather but also want a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry, you haven’t really had many options. While real leather obviously doesn’t fit with an ethical lifestyle, many vegetarian and vegan leather alternatives are made from plastic, adding to the already vast amount of waste filling our oceans. But while innovation has been slow, there are more sustainable options being developed around the world and becoming available to consumers. The one thing these new leather alternatives have in common? They’re all being created from plants. Pleather is a portmanteau for “plastic leather”, whereas vegan or vegetarian leather suggests that the fabric is more sustainably and ethically made — but that’s not...

ASOS is showing the high street that circular fashion doesn’t have to compromise on style or price point. The affordable online retailer debuted its first circular fashion collection on Monday, 28 Sept, which offers on-trend clothing and accessories that have been made according to “industry-leading circularity principles”. ASOS’s circular collection includes 29 consciously created pieces of clothing and accessories that meet the brand’s commitment at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit in 2018 to train all designers in circular design by 2020. But, what is circular fashion? The brand explains by sharing the eight eco-conscious design principles that were used to create the new collection: Zero-Waste Design: Using zero-waste design pattern-cutting methods to ensure ...

The coronavirus is completely transforming our relationship with fashion and clothing. While we reflect on the ethical footprint of our everyday purchases, our favourite brands are being forced to take sustainability more seriously. The pandemic has shown us how globally connected we all are — for better or worse. If fashion wants to thrive post-lockdown, then companies must connect the stories of those making clothes to the people buying them and how that aligns with the needs of our planet. Fashion’s embrace of sustainability has been slower than expected, but with shoppers becoming more conscious of our consumption, popular brands are responding more quickly to demand. What is lacking is brand transparency. Fashion Revolution Week 2020 marks the seven-year anniversary of the Rana ...
