The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has paid a consultative visit to former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the current security situation of the country and South south matters particularly the need for a regional security arrangement for the South-South as being done by other zones in the country. The PANDEF delegation led by the National Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, said they visited the former President because he was a key voice in the country, and the political leader of the Niger Delta Region, and that his vast knowledge and understanding of the complexities and intricacies of the country, and the region, would be of immense benefit to PANDEF, and other groups in the country in the efforts to resolving the challenges we are confronted with. The group in a s...
Why is there is a lack of size diversity in the vintage market as a whole? I think there’s a general perception that what we would classify as “modern mid-plus size” people didn’t exist before now, whereas that’s absolutely not the case. The reality is though that for whatever reason it really can be harder to find quality mid-plus pieces. Natural fibres versus polyester. Tailored versus shapeless. Statement versus every day. Pieces in larger sizes were often custom or homemade, and I read recently that often they’ve been handed down through families and worn beyond repair. This is my job and even I find it nearly impossible to source certain pieces. I wish it wasn’t the case as there’s nothing I love more than Space Age cockta...

Sustainability is on the minds of everyone in fashion right now. For most of us, our consideration of where and how our clothes are made has only been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, the fashion industry was completely turned on its head. Last month, it was announced that London Fashion Week won’t be taking place in September with both men’s and women’s shows taking place digitally in June, which would usually be men’s fashion week. And just last week, Saint Laurent announced that it will no longer be taking part in the Paris Fashion Week schedule preferring to dictate its own show timetable. Without the carbon footprint of a physical fashion week, this move to a more sustainable fashion industry is one I hope will continue.&n...
Sustainable fashion can be confusing. Is it vegan? Ethically produced? Environmentally friendly? Fair-trade? Is it a catch-all term for anything that relates to fashion that isn’t fast? The short answer is that it can be all those things. The long answer is that it’s much more complicated than that. Sustainable fashion pertains to the sourcing, production and distribution of the garment. The lifespan of a piece of clothing must be looked at from start to finish. It means understanding that organic cotton is better than regular cotton, as it doesn’t use pesticides or harmful chemicals that are bad for the skin. Also, manmade fabrics (such as polyester) are damaging to the environment, as they’re often made from plastic and are nonbiodegradable. While leather can be eco-friendly, it can stil...
There has been a shift within the fashion industry of late. Thanks to 2019’s spotlight on the climate crisis, consumers are more aware of the fact that it is one of the most polluting industries in the world and one that contributes significantly to global warming. However, people’s shopping habits aren’t going to be curbed overnight. So then how can we make sure our wardrobes are more sustainable if we’re not buying second hand and can’t face not shopping at all? The answer lies in one small change: investing in organic cotton. I spoke to three sustainable fashion experts about this material and how it can create various environmental and health benefits: Alicia Taylor, who runs sustainable shopping site Gather & See, Ben Matthews, who is the CEO of sustainable clothing brand Ninety P...
Truly sustainable fashion starts with our own two hands. Buying fewer clothes, finding secondhand pieces, or investing in eco-conscious garments is a great start, but learning a few basic hand-sewing techniques is the easiest way to reduce the amount of clothes going to landfill. If you’re anything like us, then maybe you never learned how to sew. Instead of figuring out how to sew a loose button, fix a snagged thread on a jumper, or patch a pair of socks, we often end up buying something new because it seems easier. Our relationship with fast fashion is kind of bizarre when you really think about it. If we compare fashion and clothing to food and cooking, then your perspective really begins to shift. Whether you have a super-busy lifestyle and food deliveries help to make your days ...
“Vivienne Westwood said it best: ‘Buy less, choose well, make it last,’ and I believe in this. Choose pieces that you absolutely love and ones you know you’ll keep forever. It’s also important to think, ‘Repair before you replace.’ Small rips, holes and missing buttons can easily be fixed. Make friends with your cobbler. Quality shoes can be worn for many seasons with a small investment in maintenance. Also, never throw clothing away. Clothing that is placed in regular garbage is either incinerated or ends up in a landfill. If you don’t wear something anymore, it can always make somebody else happy. If it can’t be worn anymore, it can be recycled. In every Sézane Appartement, there is a collection point called La Grande Collecte (the Gr...

A 3,800 acre property located in Nevada’s Great Basin may hold secrets as to what the future of Burning Man could look like. Known as Fly Ranch, the property was purchased in 2016 by several high-profile donors for $6.5M. “The individuals that contributed funding for the purchase have one thing in common: they have been deeply moved and changed by their involvement in Burning Man, and they are invested in the future of this culture,” a journal published by the organization states.
