Richard Donner, the beloved filmmaker who brought new meaning to the Hollywood blockbuster with films like Superman, The Goonies, and the Lethal Weapon franchise, has died. He was 91 years old. According to his wife, producer Lauren Schuler Donner, and his business manager, Donner passed away on Monday, July 5th (via Deadline). Donner’s seven-decade career began in television, where he directed episodes of a number of classic series including Gilligan’s Island, The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, Get Smart, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Route 66, Perry Mason, and The Wild Wild West. He transitioned to features with the 1968 Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford starrer Salt and Pepper, a crime comedy that somewhat foreshadowed his future creation of Lethal Weapon. Abrams and Matt Reeves are developing a new animated series called Batman: Caped Crusader. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, it’s found a streaming home on HBO Max alongside the forthcoming cartoon My Adventures with Superman. Joined by DC animation legend Bruce Timm (the man behind the iconic Batman: The Animated Series), Caped Crusader is said to be a “reimagining of the Batman mythology” –although, based on the first poster, it’s still about a man who dresses like a bat. Instead, this seems to refer to a shift in perspective and tone. In a joint statement...
Warner Bros. and DC Films have confirmed that a new Superman reboot is in the works from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams, who is set to produce via his Bad Robot banner. Besides the fact that Hannah Minghella (the upcoming Cloverfield sequel and Masters of the Universe reboot) is also on board as a producer, not a thing is known about this new Superman movie. That includes how it will tie into the existing DC Extended Universe or whether Henry Cavill, who played Clark Kent/Kal-El in Zack Snyder’s DCEU trilogy and the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League, will return to the role. We know he’s keen to do so, but we’ve also heard DC and Abrams had spoken to Michael B. Jordan about potentially putting on the cape. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter writer Borys Kit tweeted that sour...
Comic-Con@Home has been streaming panels since Wednesday, but the virtual version of the San Diego event isn’t the only digital gathering of geeks happening this weekend. Bloggers The Nerd Queens (Cole and Nana) and Wonder Meg organized Justice Con in celebration of Zack Snyder’s long-called-for director’s cut of Justice League, finally set to debut on HBO Max next year. The filmmaker himself appeared for a Zoom panel during the event, and he didn’t come empty handed. While a trailer will be saved for DC Entertainment’s DC FanDome event in August, Snyder presented fans with a 17-second teaser clip. Now that might not seem like much, but when that footage is of the first-ever live-action appearance of Superman’s black suit from the classic 1993 Superman Returns comic, it’s really every...
It’s been 7 years since Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill breathed new life into the long dormant and left for dead Superman film franchise and though Superman V Batman and Justice League pretty much ruined the foundation set in 2013, we still very much like Cavill as the Man of Steel. After years of rumors that Warner Bros. was ready to once again reboot the franchise with a new lead and show Cavill the door, Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros and DC have engaged in talks with the British actor to return but unfortunately it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting that long awaited sequel 2013’s Man of Steel (damnit!!). We hear Cavill could come back in a couple of different ways, not a standalone film, but there are plans to put him back in the big red cape again sources with knowledge te...
At this point, I’d be cautious to take news coming out about any cinematic Superman with a grain of salt, but here’s the latest: Henry Cavill is reportedly in talks to reprise his role as the Man of Steel in future DC Extended Universe films. Deadline broke the story, noting that “sources with knowledge” of the situation say Warner Bros. is trying to bring Cavill back for multiple DC movies. However, one of those is not a standalone sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel. Instead, Cavill’s Superman would appear in supporting or cameo roles in other characters’ movies, with many comparing the arrangement to something like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Looking ahead, WB currently has Wonder Woman 1984 awaiting an August 14th release after a COVID-19-induced delay, while&n...
