Sunny Day Real Estate

For Sunny Day Real Estate, Time Is Once Again Poetry

Plopped onto 120 acres less than a mile from Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., Disney Springs is, according to its creators, “a themed retail, dining and entertainment center inspired by Florida’s charming waterfront towns.” This “sprawling promenade” divided into “four distinct neighborhoods” hosts such lovable establishments as Maria & Enzo’s Ristorante (“savor authentic Italian cuisine at this stunning trattoria,” its Web site invites) and multi-level paeans to corporate behemoths such as Coca-Cola and M&Ms. At a time when no aspect of American life seems, well, real, this is where SPIN meets Sunny Day Real Estate guitarist Dan Hoerner for a rare interview on an 89-degree afternoon in late September, two weeks into the pioneering Seattle rock band’s first tour in 12 years. Sunny Day Real Estate Plays First Show in 12 Years at Spokane Club

Sunny Day Real Estate warmed up for its highly anticipated reunion tour last night (Sept. 10) with a short-notice show at the 250-capacity Big Dipper in Spokane, Wash. It was the band’s first performance since May 2010 and introduced new bassist Chris Jordan from the Seattle band Spirit Award as well as touring guitarist Greg Suran, who will share duties with Jason Narducy throughout the fall run. “Hello, everyone. We are Sunny Day Real Estate,” frontman Jeremy Enigk said matter-of-factly before the group launched into “Seven,” the first song from its legendary 1994 debut album Diary. “Is this for real?” a woman in the audience yelled. “I think so,” Enigk replied. “I might be dreaming.” The set list featured a number of songs not performed during the group’s return to activity in 2009 and ...

The 40 Best Emo Love Songs

While emo music might be most associated with sadness and heartbreak, those lovelorn artists couldn’t have written such songs without experiencing some serious romantic highs. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we wanted to focus on the good parts of love more than the bad — although there’s still some unhappiness and resentment mixed in. (I mean, it is still emo after all.) SPIN’s writers spanned decades, waves and numerous albums looking for the top emo love songs, and now we’ve gathered them all here to save you the work. And yes, we know “emo” is just as broad a term as “love song” — you may also describe some of these acts as pop-punk or post-hardcore or even heart-on-sleeve indie-rock. But all of these bangers branch off the same family tree. From trailblazers like The Get Up Kids...

Exclusive: Sunny Day Real Estate Reuniting for 2022 Tour

Influential emo band Sunny Day Real Estate is reuniting for the first time in 12 years for shows this spring, but without original bassist Nate Mendel, SPIN has learned. According to people familiar with the situation, this incarnation of the group will include original vocalist/guitarist Jeremy Enigk, guitarist Dan Hoerner and drummer William Goldsmith playing with as-yet-unnamed additional musicians. No additional details were available and group members were unavailable for comment. Goldsmith has been teasing a reunion for several days on his Instagram feed, where he’s shared videos of him rehearsing drum parts for a variety of Sunny Day Real Estate songs and a screenshot of a text message exchange with Hoerner. A new Instagram account, @SDREtour, also appeared last week but has yet to ...

The 50 Best Songs of the Year 2000

The year 2000 looms large in pop culture history: the Y2k non-scare, the Seinfeld “Newmannium” episode, the “In the Year 2000″ sketch from Conan O’Brien’s original late-night show, the Hulu series PEN15. And just like, say, the grunge-defined 1991, the year immediately conjures specific sounds: gleaming teen-pop, earnest radio rock, the Neptunes and Timbaland. There’s never a bad time to revisit this music. But in the middle of a pandemic, with America on the verge of collapse, it feels extra comforting — a blast of nostalgia for a time when you could safely exit your home, visit your local mall’s Sam Goody and buy Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” CD single. For this list, our only criteria was that the songs appear on albums or soundtracks released in 2000. Here we go. 50. Papa Roach, “Last Reso...

The 25 Best Soundtrack Albums of the 1990s

In the 1980s, music and film collided for cross-promotional blockbusters both transcendent (Purple Rain) and transcendently cheesy (Footloose). In the ‘90s, soundtracks continued to sell in the millions, capturing cultural moments like the Seattle grunge of Singles or the Britpop and electronica of Trainspotting. Auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson reached deep into their record collections to set the mood while movies like Above the Rim and Menace II Society pioneered the concept of soundtracks as hip-hop mixtapes. A great soundtrack can propel an unsuccessful single, like Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose,” to the top of the charts, or revive a decades-old hit, like Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It can also push a cult singer-songwriter like Elliott Smith or Aimee Mann to an Oscar perf...
