2022 Emmys Predictions: Our Best Guesses As to Who Will Win Big This Year

Like all awards ceremonies, every year the Emmys recognize a wide range of inspiring, hilarious, complex, and/or heartbreaking shows and performances in its nominations, and like all awards ceremonies, the actual winners sometimes feel a little disappointing, if only because the winner was the predictable choice. So, in that spirit, here is a humble effort to try to guess what and who the TV Academy will choose to recognize this Monday, when the 74th annual Emmy Awards are handed out. One word to describe the predictions below? Pragmatic is probably the most politically correct term to use. For, sometimes the Emmys can be truly exciting and innovative in their winners, but other times, the awards basically go to the same three shows. 2022 Emmy Nominations: Succession, Abbott Elementary, Pam & Tommy, Squid Game and More Score Big

In the era of so much TV, each Emmy Awards nominations morning brings with it a degree of chaos. In 2022, that remains consistent, though there are familiar faces returning to the dance as well as fresh voices. As many predicted, the third season of Succession (which dominated in 2020) was the nominations count leader with 25, including what feels like a metric ton of acting nominations across nearly all categories. Meanwhile, Netflix’s three big plays in the drama series category — Ozark, Stranger Things, and Squid Game — didn’t perform outrageously well. All did secure Outstanding Drama Series nods, though, and with 14 nominations for Squid Game and 13 each for Ozark and Stranger Things, that’s nothing to sneeze at. Apple TV+’s Severance (Consequence‘s best show of 2022 so far) also pick...

Succession Details Season 4 as Production Begins

It looks like Succession fans may not have to wait too long for the next installment, as HBO has announced production is underway for Season 4. In addition to revealing it spans 10 episodes, the network shared some details about the show’s upcoming plot. “The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer,” reads the official logline. “The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.” Succession will of course continue to center around media mogul Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his children, Kendall (...

Golden Globes 2022 Winners: The Power of the Dog, West Side Story, Succession Take Top Prizes

The 2022 Golden Globes represented a truly unprecedented moment for the 78-year-old awards ceremony — for one thing, there wasn’t a public ceremony. Instead, in the middle of both a rising Omicron wave and an ongoing existential crisis, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced last Thursday that it would announce this year’s winners via social media on the designated night, during a private event. Thus, with pretty much the opposite of fanfare, The Power of the Dog (Drama) and West Side Story (Comedy/Musical) were named the best films of 2021 by HFPA members. On the TV side, Succession, HBO Max’s Hacks, and Amazon Prime’s The Underground Railroad were recognized as last year’s outstanding drama, comedy, and limited series. Jane Campion also won best director for The Power of ...

Golden Globes 2022 Nominees Revealed: See the Full List

On Monday morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the nominees for the 2021 Golden Globes. The 79th annual entertainment awards are set to be given out on January 9th, 2022, and Snoop Dogg was on hand to help reveal the nominated TV and film projects. Belfast and The Power of the Dog ran away from the nomination pool with seven nods each, including Best Motion Picture, Drama; Best Director (Kenneth Branagh and Jane Campion, respectively); and Best Screenplay (again for Branagh and Campion). Jamie Doran and Ciarán Hinds from Belfast will compete against each other in the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture category, where they’re also up against The Power of the Dog’s Kody Smit-McPhee. Caitriona Balfe (Belfast) and Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog) are also c...

The Succession Season 3 Finale Confirmed Why the HBO Series Is One of TV’s Most Fascinating Dramas

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers through the Season 3 finale of Succession, “All the Bells Say.”] One of the elements which stood out the most about Season 3 of Succession was location: specifically, a shift to the sun-dappled splendor that is rural Tuscany, site of both Lady Caroline Collingwood’s (Harriet Walter) wedding and her betrayal of her children. While the HBO series has always been aesthetically lush, with an emphasis on the elegant homes and offices in which the Roys seem born to dwell in, having some of the series’ most ugly behavior to date take place in such a beautiful place seems like the ultimate distillation of the show as a whole. The finale once again featured the Roy children coming after control of the company, this time in an effort to prevent tech mo...

Courtney Love Beefs with Elon Musk, Calls Him Out for “Kendall Roy Shit”

Succession is a brain-breaking show; once you see it, you see it everywhere. So it goes with Courtney Love, who approved her late husband’s song “Rape Me” for an episode of the HBO series in November, and who is now using it as ammunition in an attack on Elon Musk. After the billionaire tweeted a rude comment about Senator Bernie Sanders, Love called him out for acting like Succession‘s number one birthday boy, naming Musk’s behavior as, “Kendall Roy shit.” Love’s December 2nd tweet was a little late to the party; Musk’s attack on Sanders happened on November 14th. After the senator posted, “We must demand that the extremely wealthy pay their fair share. Period,” Musk responded, “I keep forgetting that you’re still alive.” It’s the kind of thing Musk probably says all the time to his ...

Courtney Love Raves About Use of Nirvana’s “Rape Me” In HBO’s Succession

If you, like seemingly everyone on Twitter, tuned in to the most recent episode of HBO‘s smash dramedy series Succession, you probably caught the perfect sync of Nirvana’s “Rape Me.” Of course, any music with Kurt Cobain’s name attached has to get the green light from his widow, Courtney Love. Thankfully, the Hole singer approved the use of the 1993 track and she went on to rave about its use in her Instagram story. “I was in the room watching (agog) as this song was written in about an hour, and I’ve never been so proud of approving one of Kurt’s songs,” Love wrote. “This cue in Succession is as if they truly understood KC. What he was screaming his heart out … without specifics … about. I’m sure wherever he is he’s proud of this. #rapeme #kurtdcobain #nirvana #disruption #myfavorite...

Succession Renewed for Fourth Season

As if there was any doubt, HBO has officially renewed Succession for a fourth season. The news comes on the heels of Succession’s Season 3 premiere, which drew over 1.4 million viewers across all of HBO’s platforms — a record high for any HBO Original since the launch of HBO Max, the channel says. “With each season of Succession, [creator] Jesse Armstrong has continued to surpass our wildest expectations, pulling us deeper into the Roy family’s inner sanctum with indelible wit, humanity, and precision,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, in a statement. “This season is undoubtedly no exception, and we couldn’t be more excited for all that’s in store in this next season ahead.” Advertisement Related Video In a recent interview with British GQ, Brian Cox (who pla...

HBO’s Succession Turns Its Family Feud Into All-Out War in Season 3: Review

The Pitch: When last we left the backstabbing, mega-wealthy Roy family, prodigal son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) finally plunged the dagger in the back of his imperious father, Logan (Brian Cox), by holding a presser in which — rather than acting as the “blood sacrifice” Logan wants to throw to the wolves — he publicly laid bare incriminating accusations of malfeasance within Waystar Royco’s Cruises division. It’s a ballsy act, one born of two seasons’ worth of tension between them, the latest move in their perpetual chess game. But the question remains: What now? Well, fresh off his impulsive gamble, Kendall rallies the troops: Initially, he’s just got Greg the Egg (Nicholas Braun) on his side, having snuck him the Cruises documents he needs to support the accusations. But what of Shiv (...

Leaked testimony from Haiti suspects says plan was to arrest, not kill president

A group of Colombians and Haitian Americans suspected of assassinating Haitian President Jovenel Moise told investigators they were there to arrest him, not kill him, the Miami Herald and a person familiar with the matter said on Sunday. Moise was shot dead early on Wednesday at his Port-au-Prince home by what Haitian authorities say was a unit of assassins made up of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans, plunging the troubled Caribbean nation into deeper turmoil. The murder and uncertainty about who hatched the plot is the latest in a succession of blows to hit the struggling country, which has appealed for international help. Washington has so far rebuffed Haiti’s request for troops, though a senior U.S. official said on Sunday that Washington was sending a technical team to assess th...
