(Amy Harris) A Minneapolis man who attended the Sturgis Motorcycle month has died of COVID-19, according to NBC News. It’s the first death linked to 10-day biker festival, which drew more than 460,000 attendees to Sturgis, South Dakota last month. The man, said to be in his 60s, was hospitalized and placed in intensive care upon his return from Sturgis, according to the Minnesota Department of Health, which confirmed his passing on Wednesday. Smash Mouth Receive Hate Mail Amid Rise in COVID-19 Cases Linked to Sturgis

In the aftermath of this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, festival headliners Smash Mouth (those words haven’t been written in a decade or two) have shared some of the hate mail they’ve received. The rally took place from August 7th to 16th and Smash Mouth held down the Sunday night slot at the flagship event, the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. During their set before a large, mask-less crowd, lead singer Steve Harwell seemed to mock the pandemic, shouting, “We’re all here together tonight! Fuck that COVID shit!” The message may have resonated for Sturgis attendees, but for others, it left the band with the shape of an ‘L’ on their foreheads. Now, in an Instagram post, the “All-Star” rockers have revealed an angry letter from a fan. It depicts a shattered CD sprinkled over a hand-written note. Only...

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Now Linked to 100+ Coronavirus Cases in Eight States

Fears over this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally of becoming a super-spreader event for the coronavirus are unfortunately now being realized. As of this week, health officials in eight states have confirmed more than 100 cases of COVID-19 connected to the rally, according to CBS News. In the rally’s home state of South Dakota, there have been 40 documented cases, while officials in nearby Minnesota have counted 35 cases to date. And it stands to only get worse in the days to come. According to The Associated Press, an analysis of anonymous cell phone data from Camber Systems, a firm that aggregates cell phone activity for health researchers, found that 61% of all the counties in the US have been visited by someone who attended Sturgis. Health officials say conducting contract tracing a...

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Already Linked to Multiple Coronavirus Cases

No one saw this coming: the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has been linked to at least seven new cases of the coronavirus, with many more likely to come in the days ahead. On Thursday, the Panhandle Public Health District confirmed seven new cases of COVID-19 in South Dakota and nearby Nebraska “tied to the rally,” according to NBC News. Meanwhile, ABC 5 News reports that local Sturgis officials are planning to conduct mass testing of its residents next week in an attempt to mitigate a possible outbreak of infections from the rally. South Dakota health officials say they’ve seen a 43% increase in positive coronavirus cases over the past two weeks, with 125 new cases alone confirmed on Thursday. Upwards of 450,000 people attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally earlier this month, making it the...

Smash Mouth, Trapt, and Buckcherry Are Playing the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Next Month

While the vast majority of large-scale gatherings have been canceled due to COVID, the annual Sturgis Buffalo Chip motorcycle rally and concert series is moving forward as planned. In year’s past, the Sturgis Buffalo Chip has drawn upwards of 700,000 people to Sturgis, South Dakota for its multi-day festival. In 2020, because of the pandemic, organizers are anticipating a smaller crowd than usual. But even at a reduced capacity, the Buffalo Chip is shaping up to me the largest public gathering to take place since COVID began. For its part, event organizers are encouraging attendees to follow CDC guidelines. There will be signage with recommended safety practices posted throughout the park, and hand sanitizer will be readily available. The capacity of the amphitheater itself will also ...
