Over the last few months at Who What Wear, we have started venturing back out into the world and documenting how real women are dressing post lockdown. Taking to the streets of east London’s Broadway Market, photographer Michaela Efford and I have spent numerous hours politely asking strangers if we can photograph the outfits they’ve chosen to wear on their morning coffee run, local park walk or casual lunchtime shop. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the experience it’s that British women have really, really good taste, particularly when it comes to accessories. Last month’s contingent of street stylers toted designer bags by the dozen, while this month’s stylish set also had a penchant for elevated accessories. Need some p...
The photographed outfits were, much to my amazement, absolutely dripping in Y2K flashbacks. While we’re more than aware of this decade’s omnipresence among Gen Z and their social and shopping platforms of choice—TikTok, Depop—no one could have guessed that the streets of Paris would act as the backdrop to this retro trend in all its colourful and controversial glory. From low-rise trousers worn with tummy-baring tops to mesh fabrics, headscarves and cargo pants, there was very little on offer by way of more traditional French minimalism. Below, we chart the street style trends that lean heavily into the noughties and now have a very high fashion stamp of approval. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined wh...
Although the weather at this time of the year might not be the most reliable, you can always depend on Brits to dress the part and bring the summer aesthetic with them in spite of the daily forecast. Earlier this month, photographer Michaela Efford and I took to the streets of East London in search of the best outfits we could find. And despite the Met Office app’s forewarning for grey skies, we still managed to track down several looks that absolutely epitomised summer and can help us all segue into the warm days we’re wishing for. From floral-printed shorts suits to breezy linen trousers and voluminous minidresses, Londoners are definitely not letting a few clouds get in the way of perfecting their summer style.&nbs...
Knowing how to wear leopard print comes down to this one simple, unwritten rule: Treat it like any black item in your wardrobe. Yes, this might seem counterintuitive, but adding a little leopard to any outfit upgrades and harmonises a look. True, leopard print has often walked the line between flashy and luxurious, but it’s been proven time and again that fashion girls can’t resist it. And despite its ubiquity, leopard prints popularity began with one designer and his muse—more specifically, Christian Dior and Mitzah Bricard. Bricard was fascinated by leopard print, and as a result, during the ’50s, Dior created a range of his accessories featuring the design, elevating leopard to be the must-have print of the moment. Costume design is this really interesting area where fashion and entertainment meet. Series like Gossip Girl and The Handmaid’s Tale, and films like Clueless and The Devil Wears Prada, have had a major impact on how we dress. We’d love to credit Blair Waldorf for the recent revival of headbands. And if it weren’t for Miranda Priestly, would we ever know the difference between turquoise and cerulean blue? Fashion’s dynamic relationship with pop culture is undeniable. For the past couple years, we’ve experienced a very nostalgic ’90s style renaissance. Even icons of the era, like Keanu Reeves and Celine Dion, are getting in on the action. So, we decided to try out Rachel Green’s great style from one of the decade’s most defining series, Friends...
Instagram isn’t just a space for 20-something DJ-slash–fashion bloggers anymore, as there are countless influencers over 40 who are just as influential. Style is now finally truly recognised as being ageless, and 50-something Instagrammer Grece Ghanem shows that whatever decade you were born in, you can pull off neon trousers and zebra mesh tops. Grece might dress like she’s on the front row at fashion week every single day, but her day job hasn’t always been in the fashion industry—she’s a personal trainer based in Montréal. Grece has a real ability to make intimidating trends look timeless and wears bright colours and animal print better than anyone else I follow. Her look revolves around colourful knits, wide-leg statement trousers, mesh printed tops and ple...
After spending the first few months of 2021 in a nationwide lockdown, house-bound with very little reason to dress up, I’d forgive you for thinking you never wanted to see a pair of leggings again. And if so, you’re not alone. As we slowly emerge from our collective hibernation and restrictions begin to ease across the country, there seems to be a renewed sense of enthusiasm that comes with getting dressed. Whether it be popping out for a quick coffee with a friend or venturing to your local park, Brits are finding reasons to dress up. Photo: Michaela Efford Proving exactly this sentiment, last month, photographer Michaela Efford and I ventured to East London’s Broadway Market (a hot spot for fashion lovers, if you don’t already know that) in search of some st...
There’s no point in denying that the weather isn’t quite as warm as we’d like it to be right now. So what do you wear when spring isn’t quite making an appearance and you can’t be doing with the rain anymore? Take outfit inspiration from some of our favourite influencers, of course. After trawling through their Instagram accounts, we managed to come up with seven key looks that are ideal for any sort of changeable weather April might throw at us. From cool layered outfits to co-ords that are right for the office (and won’t have you freezing), there are plenty of ideas you’ll want to copy immediately. Keep scrolling for everything you need to know. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what ...
When I say that denim is back for spring/summer 2021, I mean that literally every designer and high-street brand is making a huge deal out of this material. Whether it’s in the form of a new collection of jeans, jackets, dresses, skirts or all of the above, there’s no escaping the fact that in 2021 it’s all about denim. The one item, however, that I feel has been a little overlooked for a few years is the denim jacket. Back in 2017, the Balenciaga oversized look (worn off-the-shoulder) was one of the bigger more popular styles. And then, it kind of just petered out–other jackets such as the oversized blazer or leather jacket became more popular. I just know, however, that this year is time for it to make its comeback. But, I’d say, not as you know it.&nbs...
It goes without saying that the quest for great style doesn’t end when you move into your 40s. Mature fashion influencers, in general, tend to know their style inside-out. They’re not wearing something because it’s now suddenly in; they’re wearing it because it suits them and fits in with their own style and wardrobes. This means one all-important thing that we can learn from: The clothes never wear them. All over Instagram, the over-40 fashion bloggers listed below are making their mark. Sure, you’ll find them in much of our content, but we thought it was high time to spotlight some of our favourite dressers. Not only do they have the most stylish closets going, but they’ve also taught us a thing or two about how to really put t...
Over the past few years, we’ve spotted a flurry of ’00s fashion trends making a return. Sure, some are a little scary (hello, trucker hats, velour tracksuits and low-slung denim), but other comebacks feel so right. It will take a lot to persuade us to dig out our tattoo chokers, but we’ve noticed stylish people dusting off their handkerchief tops and diving into the revival headfirst. Perhaps thanks in part to Gen Z discovering some of the trends we wore the first time round, this era is big right now. According to Lyst, the global shopping platform, “nostalgia for the 2000s has got fashion lovers searching. Looking at the past month searches for “Y2K” and 2000s inspired fashion pieces have increased by 80% year-on-year”. The good new...
