All-Flash would Still be Cheaper, even at Twice the Price

Fred Saayman, Huawei BU Executive at Pinnacle The conversation around which is the better technology between hard disk and flash storage has been going on for years. In the data storage arena, flash arrays have been thriving, with no evidence this will slow down at any time. Hard disk drives (HDDs), on the other hand, which have been around for a lot longer are definitely seeing a slow decline in today’s technology landscape. There was a time when hard disk storage won on price alone, as flash arrays were considered extremely expensive, and there is a limit to the amount of storage any business can afford. The largest enterprises that needed a lot of capacity often went the HDD route, as these solutions were far easier on the pocket. “However, this is no longer the case. As flash technolog...

Altaro VM Backup: the Competitive Advantage

Anton Jacobsz, Networks Unlimited CEO Finding a reliable backup and replication solution for Hyper-V and VMware can be a difficult exercise. The partnership agreement between African value-added distributor, Networks Unlimited Africa, and Altaro, a leader in backup solutions for managed service providers (MSPs), IT resellers and IT departments, provides easy and affordable protection of Hyper-V and VMware virtualised environments.  A virtual machine (VM) is a software computer that, like a physical computer, runs an operating system and applications. The virtual machine is comprised of a set of specification and configuration files and is backed by the physical resources of a host. VMware backup is the copying of data on a virtual machine in a V...

The Major Benefits of All-flash Storage

Fred Saayman, Huawei BU Executive at Pinnacle Since flash storage debuted into the mainstream storage arena, its uptake has been skyrocketing in data centres across the globe, and shows no signs of slowing down. This isn’t surprising as more and more storage and speed is needed in the age of big data, and all-flash arrays are the ideal solution, particularly as the cost isn’t nearly as high as it was a decade ago. This is according to Fred Saayman, Huawei Business Unit: Executive, at Pinnacle ICT, SA’s leading local ICT distributor. “All-flash storage has many benefits over hybrid solutions. Perhaps the most compelling is its latency, as all-flash arrays usually see sub 1ms latencies on a mixed workload, and peak latency above 5 ms is highly unusual. If you compare this with SANs, for...

Teraco to Build Second-Largest Data Centre in Africa

Teraco has officially confirmed the construction of Teraco Cape Town 2 (CT2), a new 30MW data centre facility. This follows the company’s recent 60MW expansion announcement of its Johannesburg data centre campus in Isando and makes the Cape Town facility the second-largest on the continent. Jan Hnizdo, CEO at Teraco, says that the company is standing by its 2019 commitment to support the South African Government’s investment drive and with this build will be investing Billions of Rands in South Africa’s digital infrastructure: “We are truly proud that we can keep investing in the region and make good on our promise.” Driving this investment, according to Hnizdo, is the growth of cloud in the region, resulting in increased demand from cloud providers, enterprises and sub-sea cable operators...
